    Great question, Denis. Typically, the copper is the actual wire and the plastic/rubber shielding is just that - a shield. The shield needs to be peeled back to expose the copper, then the copper needs to be spliced to copper. If you have two wires like this in your cord, you can wrap each one individually with electrical tape and then tape the whole thing back up.

    Just wanted to say, an 11 year old video saved me. My rabbits chewed the cable that goes from my pedals to my steering wheel on my game racing steering wheel. It was a little scary to open the wire and discover there were six individual wires inside, but I followed these instructions and it totally works again. I couldn't find a replacement cable, so I figured I was looking at about $170 to replace the whole pedal assembly if this didn't work.

    instead of having to mess about bending wires back on themselves and double wrap etc why not just stagger the positive and negative connections so theyre an inch or so apart (at slightly different points along the cable).
    that way there is no physical possibility of them coming into contact and therefore less reliance on dreaded electrical tape as an insulator.

    I think i may have a freyed house wire somewhere inside the wall. I think its one of the wires going from the outlets in one of the bedrooms to the breaker box. Is there a way to have this fixed without tearing apart the drywall? I would really rather not have to deal with that if there is another way. There is a loud tick sound that occures from within the wall every time the compressor on my mini fridge kickes in. At first I was under the impression it was the mini fridge causing problems but now I'm thinking its a house wring problem reacting to the amp draw from the mini fridge when it turns on & off.

      Plow Still works fine after using spray on bumper /trim coating, that is supposed to be used to put a fresh layer of rubber on your trim, to cover up the exposed copper... I would have used nearly identical bed liner but was out, so now no wires are showing, and without chance for corrosion to get in and start when moisture or salt works in the wires (it will then work away from the exposed wires and long term often cause failure where you can't even see it, kind of like needing to replace /cutting off the ends of the positive and negative cables that runs to the starter since the starter is often underneath and exposed to salt.

    Nils Rasmusson rather then slicing up the wire to strip it, the other really awesome method is to just cut into the wire and circle around it with a blade, usually the knife doesnt go all the way through to the metal and you can tell how much harder you have to push it or pull sideways to slice it a bit. a tiny bit of practice and you never cut the wire or damage it at all. the slicing up the wire method you showed is a really bad method since you are almost guaranteed to cut into the wire or cut away parts of the wire if its made of a bunch of tiny wires, which is bad.

    My wireless earbuds are cutting of on the right side, I have an idea of where the wire is. I think I may use this, I just don't know if there's electrical tape in my house.

    I came here to check if it's okay if there will be no more soldering. I'm working on my laptop charger. So it's okay without soldering right?

    Will this work on the chords in side an electric blanket? My dog chewed a whole in mine that I got as a present last year, and I'm so upset. She's fine thankfully, but I'd love to try and fix this instead of having to but a new one. I have one completely broken chord like yours in the tutorial, and further down that same chords is a joint break (where the chord is still together, but the casing and and part of the wire is frayed to where it bends like an elbow)

    Just what I needed. I'm creating a light fixture using hats and was unsure how to best cut the wires so I can insert them through the hat and then safely reconnect.

    What will happen if you try to plug a cord with broken blades (for lack of a better word, pointy things that physically go into the wall) into a power socket? Will the appliance still work? Will the wall blow up? Sorry I have no idea what I'm doing.

      It depends on what you mean by broken, but I'd be careful. You could end up frying the device you're plugging in or you could get hurt. It sounds like it'll need to be replaced at some point.

    Morning Nils, Kristina from Australia here. I have question, i have just recently brought out a Hi -fi system after 8yrs in storage, and i have a problem with one of the speakers. The once exposed wires look as if it has been soldered and formed into a little ball making it impossible to put into the outlet. I have a fair idea how to fix, but can you give me your advice on the matter?

    I notice that some people solder the wires, what is the pros and cons of soldering? Thanks

    • @kramermillay
      @kramermillay 8 років тому +1

      soldering just binds them together for a stronger connection, whereas twisting them may lead to them disconnecting.

      Soldering is just a more secure and permanent way of connecting the wires

      you can buy heat shrink tubes that slip over the wire and than shrinks when you apply heat.
