Restoration British Army Bialaddin Lamp 310 1946 - 1968 Like A Tilley Lamp

- I find this old neglected Bialaddin 310 Paraffin lamp and decide to restore it. The paint was flaking off and the body was made of brass so I decided to strip the old paint and polish up the existing brass to reveal a lovely useful lamp. Enjoy.

"Made in England" ....don't see that much anymore. Beautifly done. Thank you for bringinig it back to life
Aaron B, no you don’t it’s all cheap shite made in Asia
well done. love the uncovered brass.thanks for sharing
Lovely job on them mate, really nice touch. My friend and I used to use one of those back in the day to sleep in his garage with for light to play cards to, great memories and a great restoration.keep it up!
Beautiful
Nice polished brass great idea. I rebuilt some Coleman lanterns while back years ago. Maybe I should get them out and see if I can polish them up again. I never thought about polishing them. I hope the tank is brass like yours lanterns are.
shartne Most of the coleman founts are not brass. I strip the paint off mine, apply a new decal and just keep a thin coat of light machine oil on them. IMHO it makes them look much better!
So glad I found your channel! Beautiful work well done!
Well done--beautiful piece. I think I'd do an electrical conversion--keeping the original looks as much as possible.
Sacrilege!
Good job
Nice lamp
Here is a hint for you. Whne you paint your items...to keep off excess dust ect..take a very clean dry bucket and put it over the items until they dry.
I love these old lamps. I think I could live by them. You did a great job. 💚♰😻
So handy when the power goes out. Electrical linesmans plyers? Get some proper spanners.
I remember the Tilley Lamp as a kid in Australia, there was one in every home I reckon. Now you have a job to find one.
You can still buy them here in England!

I have one of these that my Dad used on the farm in the 1950s and it still works perfectly today. A terrific bit of kit!
nice restoration. I have an old Anchor lamp (very similar design) in the shed. all the chrome has bubbled, it's rusty as anything after 30 years of sea fishing, a real mess. I keep looking at it thinking I should throw it out. after seeing your stunning job on this one, I think they may be hope for it. wish me luck
Why did you remove the green enamel? The value of the lamp dropped 80%. A restoration aims to restore parts, appearance and function, I guess this is a "prettying up" rather than any restoration that a veteran would recognise. Collectors (and most are users) will pay a lot for the enamelled hoods, be they Tilley, Bialaddin or Coleman. And it matters little if the hoods are chipped. Anyway, a true restorer can still find an enamelled hood and paint the fuel tank.
So you didn't like it then
Martin, Great job & looks like new, We used to use these lamps when i was serving with 45 Commando Royal Marines on Isle of Skye when you used
the ferry to go across. The mantles where so fragile after being fired up like a spiders web. Cheers Dave
Simply fantastic Martin. It’s amazing how well items of days past come back to life.
Used a Coleman Tilley Lamp when in Norway (believe it or not) we used it in a our 10 man tent for light and a wee bit of heat..
Excellent restoration, I actually have the same Lamp and now your video has made me think about restoring my one.
So thank You for sharing this video 🙂.
Wonderful job with great looking results. My only concern is that you media blasted the softer metal parts. I find this only makes extra work for yourself when polishing brass, bronze and other soft metals. Keep it up though what ever you are doing works for you.
I find a dishwasher can do wonders on things like this without damaging soft metals.
Best you don't let the little lady know, though :D!
I can remember when 'British Made' meant quality that lasted. A superb restoration!.
Yep US made used to mean the same. I don't know if anything is US made any more.
I remember too
@@طيرشلوى-ن2ن when I look for vintage items, I generally look for Made in USA first, but Made in England comes in a close second. At one time, made in Japan meant cheap crap, then they managed to change that by making quality stuff. Many years ago, made in China actually meant quality, but that was before Mao and all that crap. Maybe someday they'll realize quality will do better. However, you can't really blame the Chinese manufacturers, they make it cheap because that's what the buyers (chain stores and such) want, cheap stuff that doesn't last, that way we have to buy more. Not much of anything made today can be rebuilt, they make it so it's not restorable, generally speaking.
@@tootall5559 The American industry and the British industry are both luxurious. They are excellent countries with good industry .... I don't know English very well and I use Google Translate .... please write in Arabic 🙏
@@طيرشلوى-ن2ن Neither country makes much these days. I'll use translate for you too.

I’ve rebuilt several old Coleman lanterns. With a little love, those last forever. Another great vid, Martin.
I've got the exact same lamp in similar condition and I've just bought the repair kit for it so will be restoring that soon
I was super fond of these lamps. Nowadays you just see batteries and LEDs. No craftsmanship or any complexity to them. Shame!
The british army tmk never had this 310 model; instead they were firm customers of the 305 model till about the '70's, when they bought the nearly identical looking Vapalux M-1. With the 80's came the switch to the Vapalux 320 model till the end in the first decade of 2000, when the army opted for LED's.

I have Coleman lanterns that pumpm up and look similar to your and operates the same way. Mine uses unleaded gas. I wonder if your could use gas as well? I have never heard of a pump up lantern useing paraffin?
Hello mate,
Where do you normally order spare parts (website)? Is this lantern scarce? How can I know if mine belonged to the British army? Is it a 200cp/hk appliance? I found out a 310 here in Chile. Regards
Hi, this lamp looks stunning. I too have a 310 model which I want to service. I'm waiting on the service kit to arrive. I remember this lamp got us through many 1960/70's power cuts, including the winter of discontent. However, as a child I never noticed how much fuel it used, can you enlighten me? I remember the lamp also gave off a lot of heat and I'm wondering whether it could supplement the rather poor and increasingly costly source of heating I currently rely on.
Hello from the south of India. Watching this brought back so much memories from my childhood. In the village, these were a standard for any festivities and we had one or two lying around in the house. People used to rent these on occasions such as festivals, weddings etc.,
Glad to see it come back to life. You have made my day. Thank you :)
Hi I trust that was Parafin you filled up with and NOT Petrol, also you used Methylated spirit to pre-heat Nice job
I enjoyed watching the restoration. But I would have enjoyed watching the initial light up more. these old paraffin lamps and Colemans, ect, can be fiddly as hell to get running. That's what I wanted to see. exotic curse words, missing eyebrows and the occasional mad dash outside with the flaming object that is trying to burn down your house and set your hair on fire. You literally skipped the best part.
British , German or America made is still good quality stuff but most of us go for the cheap chinese $hit !
Why? Money talks and bull$hit walks!
Wow that's fantastic never thought you would get it back fully operational after seeing it in one of your vlogs over on retrorestore. Great job Martin. Love your videos.
Beautiful restoration!
But I gotta tell you... You drive me nuts with those line pliers! lol
Used these camping with the Scouts in early 1970's worked well and lit up tents etc really well...bugger to change the mantle on them.
Nice job as ever.
fantastic bud really nice work,i have the gas one ,these mantles are a menace to fit lol ......all the best martin.........................dougie
I renovated three a couple of years ago. Two Vapalux and a Tilley. Came out very well.
I used to go night fishing with one of these. Never caught a bloody thing. I suspect the paraffin tainted the bait somewhat.
Not black.........
Excellent restoration but your correct on old mantles sometimes they were made from thorium and were radioactive from it
Bought one of ebay, thank you for this guide. Look forward to getting it going.
Maravilhoso
Esse petromax me remeteu a minha infancia no interior
Ai que saudade
Only time i saw a mantle was in caravan in Wales..They weren't burning right so us city folk were poking at them...Wondering what they were about.. One of us was smart enough to point out they were VERY FRAGILE!
Looked like you had trouble getting the Bloomers on! ;)
Great job on the restoration. It turned out nice.
I just watched a video of a boy who was restoring a similar lantern and he took a wire brush grinding wheel to the brass tank. He could never buff out all the scratches. He put auto body filler on the vent hood. I'm guessing the first time it got hot the filler will bake out.
Once again. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, i've seen that vid too. I agree about the filler as well.
Something of a greenhorn, eh?
Nice vid. Great detail. Subscribed. I have an old Aladdin ive gotten for cheap off ebay been intending to refurb... new motivation now and will get to it shortly. One Q tho....Did you clearcoat the brass base when you were finishing up or did you leave uncoated to age and patina nicely?
Just left it to age bud. Thanks for the sub.
Glad to see that u didn't paint that brass.. that sir looks like a work of art.. and happy to see that it works well... Question.. what does parrafin consist of versus white gas used in the Coleman lanterns?
I think Paraffin is cheaper
Great, much btr than todays Petromax...
Why didn't you wear gloves instead of touching the items with your bare fingers, before painting them ?
Who knows
Nice restoring job again. When you do things like this, do you know how they go together or do you have a parts break down to look at for help?
This was pretty simple as there were only a few parts.
Nice resto. Would have been nice to see the font put to the mop.
BTW where did you buy the spares from?
Ebay bud
Bet you were dead excited to light it! Great job
Very nice. Am l correct in assuming that the top of the lantern will get too hot for a powder coat finish?
Yes bud it would
having problems serching for the repair washer kits , where is the best place to buy ?
i got them from Ebay.
Good job dude. But please don't sandblast copper parts, only clean them, then polish it, because they are gonna have those tiny holes on the surface.
another great video Martin like the intro music the lamp looks fantastic keep the good work up Martin
good old made in England. excellent job
I love the lamp Martin. You just can’t get quality items like that anymore. These days it’s all cheap Chinese tat. Quality in most things is a thing of the past. Amazing job as usual.
Why ? Why, for the sake of Oa, no one who restore ancient lanterns, paint them GREEN, especially when the base material IS green ??? ;)
But your point is valid !
Vitreous enamel was it the original? Is that the same as stove enamel. Anyway I believe you’d need a special oven to restore that and to be sure it did not run. Another lovely job and better than the original in many ways. Although they say use lamp oil in the heater wick zi usually found it cleaner with methylated spirit. The Aladdin more ornate lamps are still about, they have mantles made in Brazile stabilised with shellac so you have to be careful on first lighting after putting one in because they are extremely fragile.
Why is there never any commentary on these things? Has the creator lost their voice?
Its a style of video
Well the next one has to be a tilley lamp. Have done one myself. Just finding the parts was a trip down memory lane. Nice job! Oh and thank god you got rid of that shonky drill in a vice set up!😨😨😨
Very nice, well done! I SOOO remember these when I was in Scouts and I HATED them lmao! I remember that you had to be careful not to shake it or even just tap it against anything or the cloth would disintegrate! Cheers from Canada eh lol
Love your work. The original enamel finish was probably of a "porcelain", not sure of the process, After the color was applied it was dusted then baked at a very high temp, possibly a kiln to greatly harden the finish. Do your lungs a favor and at least wear a dust mask when using the compounds on the wheel. I refinished telephones early in my career and am paying for it now. west side of the pond.
Congratulations my brother for much talent of you that's object have a new life in yours hands fantastc and wonderful i am brasilian and never see a restored with talent how you in my Brazil
Amazing job I used to use tilly lamps for fishing nice to see a bit of our forces history revived for future generations. Wish I had your skills and a workshop like you have. Look forward to the next video.
Wow! This lamp is my favorite. I am still looking for it at my local flea market. Great restoration. You have brought back a new life to an old paraffin lamp. I have like and subscribed your video and channel. Cheers.
Hi Martin there is an art to putting a new wick jn and an even bigger art to get the bloody thing to light lol good job buddy
And who the hell would put a thumbs down to this man? Idiots, lol.
Thanks bud
Nice resto-mod. Surprised you did not repaint the fuel tank. Old school tech gives you a guarantee light if power fails.
we got told the used menlet was radiactive , and you had to use full IPE to change it, this is true
I don't think so bud
@@RetroHax this was in the 80s,, to put a new wick on, the hole thing had to go in to a plasic bag, tap off old one, clean off, putting on new one was ok, it was after it had been used was the problem, so we got told, the same as watches, G10 and compasses, if you had some many in a container, you had to put a radiation sign on door,
رررروعة حلووو 😍😍😍👍
Wow !!! I wan't it...excellent job i restore a few coleman's myself..Cheers 🍺🍺🍺🍺
Very nice lamp, very nice resto, i'm jealous, i am doing up some blow lamps, and a couple of kerosene stoves, will pinch some of your ideas.
Excellent job Mate.....and I'm not just saying that. You can really be proud of this one 😊👍
Cheers Malc
Hi Martin you made a cracking job of that, I remember lighting those mantles more so in caravans the gas ones! ATB Wayne.
brilliant resto ! lamp looks great ! and ideal for BBQs on summer nights. i still have my parents old tiley lamp in its box , maybe time to dig that out ? good video ! :)
Perhaps your next restoration project could be the little Castrol Oil can, the one you used to soak the leather.. It looks ancient. 😁
Good job mart
Beautiful lantern Retro. I was hoping you'd put back the made in Britain tag on the underside of the fuel tank.
Kill the music, mate. The sound of you working on the restoration is music enough. Thanks.
Superb job my friend, I was delighted when you didn't repaint the fuel tank, I believe all brass should be polished and seen.
That was amazing to watch Are You transferred I'm old lamp to a new lamp
Lovely job. Take me back to 60/70s thanks for the video. George in Stoke 👍
Hermoso ilumina espectacular. Pensar que yo tenía dos de mi abuelo, jamás los vi encendidos. Sí he visto los de gas. Bueno los de kerosene los he tirado hace años, sin poder ver su esplendor y me arrepiento de ello. Saludos desde Junín Bs.As. Argentina
That’s a lot like the Coleman lantern but the Coleman takes two elements. Cool to see a military issue, I’m glad to know at least one army used these style lanterns..
Excellent restoration Martin very interesting kept me spellbound glued to the screen. You are a magician
The end off the video was the best part, watching the bright light brought back some good memories thank you
Nice work...thanks
I saw the Light !!! haha Thank you Martin! That lamp looks like new again, great work .......... !!!!
These lamps look great in the garden in summer, I have two tilley lamps and after seeing this i think they need a refresh. A great video.
Verry nice job,anď usefull ás well, you aŕe ambifextrus no..?
excellent as usual
Awww that a awesome restoration Martin. Its neat that they still make parts for those lamps. Is that consider a antique?
Great video, I can really appreciate the time and effort involved in doing something like this.👍
Great job.....Love, love that you didn't paint the tank. It looks better than the original.
Really beautiful restoration. I certainly enjoy watching your videos.
Excellent video !!
Great job ,I really like these old lamps look good hanging in the man cave 👍👍
Nice
