  • Amongst the watches made by Patek Philippe - perhaps the most luxurious of watch brands - surely no model can be truly forgotten? However, released before the 1997 Aquanaut, the Patek Philippe Neptune certainly seems to fit the bill. In today's episode, I'd like to retrace the history of this forgotten watch and explain why, in fact, it deserves more respect than it receives.

No mention of the 5055 ? Same movement in a white gold case with a leather band !! Excellent dress watch and great value!!

Unconvinced myself, although I prefer the calendar model. I knew nothing of the Neptune before this video podcast. Thanks Armand.

The 5085 at 8:24 was quite attractive. In may go looking for it!!

Very interesting. I think it works quite well as a gem-encrusted piece. More mermaid than kraken? I think this demonstrates how often Patek design ugly watches. Gems exist, no doubt, but in general they offer little coherence and seldom conform to accepted norms of line, light, symmetry, space or proportion, relying instead on materials and brand. Their hit to miss ratio is not good, merely glossed over by brand prestige. But then the Holy Trinity couldn't be accused currently of offering a wealth of 'great' design.

Almost 4 times it's retail in fact. Boggles my mind.

Having owned a 5085 a couple of years ago I would say it is best forgotten - well built with a lovely movement but not waterproof and oh so shiny. It simply doesn’t work as an everyday watch.

Unfortunately waterproofness is huge for me.

Like Neptune, should remain at the bottom of the ocean..interesting story though.

5085 is a very cool watch. Moon phase on a sports watch...why? Tide indicator is much more useful.

Ugly, ugly and more ugly. In the mad world of Hi-Fi Speakers we have no end of overpriced and spastic designs. But this is nothing compared to wristwatches. Mechanical (ie inaccurate) movements that have poor legibility and kitsch designs.
