  • This amazing camper van was featured at the 2016 Tampa RV Super Show. We took one look at this rig and knew we had to stop and take a peak! If I had my pick of a vehicle to take to Patagonia this would be it!

    We have a Mercedes Sprinter RV that is 24' and we just love it. Took it to Alaska last summer and it got 14 MPG pulling a jeep behind it.

      What is the downside?

    • @johncnorris
      @johncnorris 8 років тому +1

      The two things that I found to be problematic were cheap plastic parts that broke easily and expensive drivetrain repairs. I did my maintenance on time and didn't beat the crap out of it so I never had the later but I know people who did. A very comfortable vehicle for a van that has a lot of capability.

    My father always wanted a 4x4 van... This unit is a conundrum to me, low clearance doesn't work optimally with 4x4'ing... This looks like a toy made especially for guys who just want the toys to look good but never really use. $100k wow, I didn't hear anything about solar panels but heard all about everything running off of electricity. Crazy stuff, now I understand where this company is going.

    I agree with Scotty Kilmer that Mercedes become real money pits as they age, and start going down in value fast. But a few popular models hold their value okay.

      +Billy Cook ....+1..Agreed.... The MB Sprinter chassis (own experience) is a huge $ service expense cost...The day's of yore MB reliability is not with the Sprinter chassis... Time will tell how the nue Ford chassis will fare...

      Seems like to me, ALL newer vehicles are made very cheaply, major repairs before 50K miles. So the diesel motor lasts 500k miles, what good is that if the rest falls apart? To me these built out Sprinters are like the Volks Westfalia. Awesome camper interiors, but a mechanical nickel and dime to death car, except it's not nickel and dime any more, it's tens of thousands of dollars.

      As someone that still owes a VW camper van (man do I still love that thing, and it has been my favorite RV to date) I can agree, somewhat, that they are maintenance heavy.I look at it like a boat. And to be honest I like to tinker on it when we are out in the middle of the wilderness. And even my 2wd (I added a limited slip) will get us back where you will only find real 4x4's And as for the engine reliability, when I blew the original, I simply replaced the engine with a BOSTIG conversion when we did the restore on it (its a 1990, with 160K). That is a ford engine I put in with the conversion. I can strip the whole engine down with a handful of tools. Change the timing belt in two hours on the road. It is the most simple thing you have ever seen. The upside is the demand for these vans. A good version can resell for 30-50K depending on condition and options. The 4x4 VW, fully restored will go over 60k all day long. Some put out by GoWesty are selling for 100k+. Yes SELLING for that. They have quite the cult following.

      I don't know about in the states but a 4x4 sprinter holds its money really well in the UK compared to RWD models, my low mileage 2003 416 4x4 cost £11000, a rwd in the same condition would be less than half that money to buy, and be easier to find.

    I guess this is the "new" speciality segment of the RV world (4x4). I put a video up months ago of a 4x4 class C. Can't think these will sell like hot cakes but they do have some practical application for a few consumers.

    The layout and features give me some ideas on doing my own van conversion, though I would get the mid height Ford Transit and get a 4x4 conversion for a lot less money (Quigley or Adventure Vans). You can order a Transit with dual heavy duty batteries and heavy duty alternator from the factory.

      The ecoboost 3.5 has more torque than the diesels from Mercedes or Ford. Uses regular unleaded, so ownership and maintenance costs are lower. i have one in my 2011 F-150. Quigley uses mostly Ford Truck parts for their conversion kit.

      +terranborn56, a ford with comparable options and 4x4 conversion by quigley will cost the same as a sprinter with factory 4x4 (55-60,000$). I checked both.

    Nice one, but still expensive for most people. If ever afford one off those, I will chose medium size, or even the Maxi, with low gears and diff lock. From what I understand, the new versions, are not so reliable as older models. As for example, the 312D or first Sprinters.

    Also would be nice if they offered manual transmission instead. It seems they are all automatic now.

    • @tybrady64
      @tybrady64 8 років тому

      Gas mileage is an advantage. The sprinter vans get around 20 mpg.

    • @DavidisDawei
      @DavidisDawei 8 років тому

      Ty Brady vs. 17 or 18?
      The biggest negative to diesel today (IMO) is the additives they make you add to every tank of diesel.
      so the MPG is actually higher when you add in the higher cost of diesel

    • @tybrady64
      @tybrady64 8 років тому

      +DavidisDawei
      Interesting, I'm not aware of the additives needed.
      I was wrong on the mpg, supposedly it's around 25 to 27 mpg. (probably less if it's loaded down with extra weight.)
      One interesting thing about diesel is that it contains around 13% more energy than gasoline per gallon, that accounts for part of the extra mpg. The Mercedes should get more miles on the engine, but when it does need service it will be more expensive. It would be interesting to see the price difference for driving a Sprinter vs other vans for say 200,000 miles when ALL expenses are accounted.

    • @DavidisDawei
      @DavidisDawei 8 років тому

      Ty Brady Thanks for the info. The US government is doing their best to defeat the benefits of using diesel

    And who can afford $100,000 for a van? Get real, this stuff is way over priced.

      I'm with you, 100k. thats why a MAN has to buy a strip model and build it to suit. With a 100k i can score a home and land....away from the noise.

      I can. Though I do not like this company much. Having a build done at a different outfit. I have owed a number of RV's/ Slide outs, pop tops, pickup with slide in, small vw van (that Westfalia was by far mine and my family's favorite). For me, a van like this (Sprinter 4x4) is a perfect option for my life, and how I want to travel. Overpriced? Not after spending well over 100k on a 30 ft RV that I had to stay near other people in. A 100K piece of junk that might as well been MFG and sold at WallyWorld. An RV that I could not park with easy in the city. That I could not go on ANY trails with. That EAT'S gas. You ever stay with other "campers" in a park? Boy that is a trip. It is like being in a trailer park. No thanks. Nope, I will take my soon to be Sprinter 4x4 over a standard RV and stay in the middle of no where, away from all but the most die hard traveling, off road nuts. And BTW, my van is looking at costing about 160K after all is said and done. Worth every penny. To me.
