Sewing Mitred Corners

- Sewing Mitred Corners. A mitred corner, in simplest terms, looks to join two edges (be it corners of patch pockets or vents in skirts), together in a diagonal direction to form a sharp and distinguished corner.
The corner is sewn into place and bulk removed.
Thankfully, sewing a mitred corner is an easy thing to achieve and can be adapted to fit many sewing projects.

That is one awesome video tutorial. As well as sewing instructions I wish you could give filming and presentation classes to various television companies who transmit craft programmes that are nowhere near so clearly delivered.
Hello Celia, Thank you so much for the huge compliment.
Beautiful work, great job explaining, as you didn't waste time. Too many people think they have to rival Steven Spielberg, so their videos are too long. Didn't know how those corners were done, & I've sewn for many years. Love it!
Very helpful, yes indeed. Additionally, your videos are well produced, being just the right amplitude in sound, succinct and to the point, and easy to follow. Thank you for the great videos! I wish you lived closer...I would buy you a beer (root beer or alcoholic type) and pizza. Keep up the excellent tutorials!
I never thought about applying this technique to a pocket. Thanks!
Short, very clear & concise. I've been reading about how to create a mitered corner, but seeing it made it much more understandable. I've subscribed & I'm going to browses all of your videos for more instruction. I'm new to sewing & I can use all the help I can find. Kudos!
Many thanks - I'm quickly becoming a fan of your tips and tricks! I specialize in aprons, and your advice has been very helpful to give them a more professional look. I'll keep watching and learning!
Yehhhhhh I managed a mitre corner with watching your tutorial, thank you very much. I am no seamstress but that was an easy way to do them 👍😍hopefully I will have a go at making proper napkins, rather than paper ones.
Fantastic E A Dunlop! Sew happy you enjoyed the tutorial and thanks for commenting, and good luck.
THANK YOU!!! For this clear easy to follow video ......... I have a beautiful old hand crochet table cloth edging . It needs a new linen centre. I had no idea how to do the amazingly neat corners.! But now I do and after I have a little (or a lot of !!) practice on a scrap of material I hope I will be able to do good enough job to justify this wonderful piece of handy work . Fingers crossed :)
Thank you so much, this will make my sewing life so much better.
No problem Mavis Ballard

Thanks for your great tutorial. I'm really new to this so your simple instructions suit my skill level very well. I've decided to make some lined curtains. How would I go about doing a mitred edge at the bottom of my curtain?
Great, love it will sure it
Thanks.
It's personal choice. You might consider serging / overlocking, using bias binding etc etc.
Thanks a lot
yes that was really helpful thank you
+Dawn Smith
My pleasure.
You can use the same technique shown here for your curtains.
No problem.
You'll have to use a template and then hold and press the pocket shape. Once thats done, edge stitch all the way around.
I love your videos, I would like to how to get rid of gap in a armhole without putting a dart?
thank you!!
My pleasure.
wonderful could I apply this to a quilt binding do you think?
Great tutorials. But how do we finish the raw edge once we have mitred the corner
Thanks.
Can I do this for all 4 corners? I bought frabric a few years ago to make Christmas napkins or is there a video on how to make napkins?
Very Nice and very easy way

Hi,Iove the vedio. Thank you.
My pleasure. Thank you for your kind comment.
Thank you very much
Hi, I love the video- it's really clear. How would you do a meat corner like this if you wanted the hem turned twice to give a neater finish? I don't know if I've explained it well enough but thanks in advance for your help x
if you have a hem that is turned once, just iron it down before following Colleen's instructions. Then, after you have done the mitered corners, press and pin the turned under edges and top stitch. Result: hemmed edges and mitered corner without having to baste stitch (although you could if you were not used to top-stitching). You only need to fold the fabric once, not twice to get an enclosed hem. Good Luck
I watched this multiple times, sorry, and couldn't understand this. I'm a sewing student working on fabric with a right and wrong side (pattern/white). Care to do one with a patterned fabric on one side that is white on the other side like quilt cotton? That would be amazing. Thank you.
I love your channel I've just subscribed! I have a video request if you are taking them :) For a v neckband with this technique (except the fold would be on the top side of the v of course) I've watched all of your NeckBand, and Necklining videos, including the V Neckband but it has the fabric crossing over at the "V" point.
Nice
Thank you.
Haha. Thank you.
that was the best
You'd have to adjust your sewing pattern prior to making the garment.
