    Lovely video, but a few things that many people do not understand. A bird will not nest in a bird box that’s part of a bird table as birds like to nest in secret. Secondly, bird boxes never need a perch. The perch just helps predators gain access.

    Love it but RSPB advises that you should not perches on any bird box as this encourages intruders. Many people are still making boxes with perches but theu ar enot required dor thr birds to nest happily in the box.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Рік тому +1

      To be honest I don’t think any bird will use the box as it’s directly above the food table so no peace and quiet. 😊🤔

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  7 років тому +4

      Hello, if you have just hand tools I would recommend you invest £5 in a mitre block. It will help guide your hand saw to make straight and 45deg cuts much easier. Purchase the timber in 2x2 stock so you don’t need to rip anything in length and you’re away. I never done any woodwork before last Xmas so I am learning every day too. Best wishes.

    • @pershop4950
      @pershop4950 6 років тому

      Use a miter box to make the 45-degree cuts. Or approximate it. Depending on what surface you put it on, 43 or 44-degrees might be close enough.

    • @orbepa
      @orbepa 5 років тому

      I know this is an old comment, but Screwfix do a great table saw for around £90 now. That will split your 2 x 4s and build you skills - once there you can make a sledge and do all your angled cuts. Thats how I got into carpentry, never looked back

    I made a table for my mum a bit like yours, but no nest box, just pitched roof. I made the table adjustable, by cutting out a square hole in the middle of the table and letting it slide up and down the main upright with 2 wedges underneath to guide and support it. I drilled holes through the main pole and the 2 wedges where I could set the height using a pin to secure its position. This was to keep pigeons off it and devouring the food in no time at all. it had the possibility to feed certain species over others I modified it again by making a vertical 3x1 box frame (not flat like a picture frame) with cut-out viewing windows covered over with clear perspex. This sat on top of the table to stop spillages and encouraging rodents, I also made an upturned funnel that slid on the main pole to deter rodents climbing up it. Eventually i set it with a 35mm gap to only allow sparrows and robins...etc. to use it. Now I have the perfect feeding station for the species I select and also rodent proofed from climbing, and also spillages. Sparrows are incredibly wasteful when feeding as they flick the seed everywhere, but not now as it's contained. I can always remove the frame and drop the table if I so wish, plus it's also good for refilling the table too. I'll upload a piccy if I get chance.

    Hi Greg, I purchased a bird table and on of the battens around the table part is hinged so it's easier to clean out the waste seed etc. Otherwise it can build up in the corners and promote disease to affect the birds. Could you make one so that the seed table can be adjusted i.e. slide up and down the post. It can then be adjusted to exclude larger birds like pigeons please?

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  2 роки тому

      I find the roof stops pigeons getting to the seed and often put a larger open flat table out for the bigger birds to keep them away from the small table 😃

    I've just found your site and have subscribed. I love the design of this table and I'm going to build one myself. BUT one thing I don't quite get - maybe it's me being dumb. • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  7 років тому

      Hi Mac, I should have made that clearer. You will see I clamped the ridge timbers then fixed the first roof section to these only. Once the clamps are removed the roof and the two ridge pieces just lift off. To stop them blowing off in wind I put a screw through the gable end into the ridge to hold it. Let me know if that's not clear and I'll draw something up to help. Thanks

      Hello, you would need 2no 2"x2" timbers 8ft long, 1no 4'x2' sheet of 12mm marine ply for the platforms and gables, 1no 4'x2' sheet of 6mm marine ply for the roof and some screws and wood glue. Hope that helps

      I've never done anything like this in my life but it's something i'd like to get into as a hobby. My Great-Grandmother's birthday is coming up in June and i'd like to build her a bird table, i've been looking at videos and plans for a few weeks but really like yours, the birdhouse roof is a fantastic idea. I've bought some basic tools, a tenon saw, circular saw, belt sander, jigsaw, speed square and pocket hole jig, as these seemed to be the things used most often in the videos i've been looking at. Do you think i'd be able to build something resembling your design with basic tools and without any prior experience? It all seems very precise and I doubt i'd be able to get the angles spot on, and to top it all off my circular saw blade isn't deep enough to saw through 2x2, so i'd have to atleast finish off the cut by hand.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  7 років тому +1

      +sindr0ne absolutely you can make this with basic tools.
      It's a piece of rustic garden furniture and not fine cabinet.
      A bit of roughness will add to its rustic charm. If you start with 2x2 stick then use the speed square to mark mitre and cut with tenon saw if necessary. Practice a few times on some offcuts. But most of all just have a go and enjoy it 👍🏼

    In your video at approx 5.25mins, where your cutting to make the cross, I tried doing that once with my mitre saw, and I burnt out the motor. I'm surprised you managed to do without any trouble.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  7 років тому +1

      I'm very sorry to hear that,
      it's possible that the blade was dull?
      That would put extra load on the motor.
      I've learned the hard way too. Cheers

    • @diybarney332
      @diybarney332 7 років тому

      The blade was brand new, well virtually brand new, apparently my Uncle said I burnt out some resistor, I've still got it collecting dust in the shed, I just went out and got a new one, and now I use my table saw for that sort of job, these tools don't come cheap lol. I enjoy your videos very informative etc and easy to follow. Thanks

    Excellent job. Is it really worth doing the nest box bits?
    I thought no birds would actually use them because they are too close to the commotion. Maybe someone here could prove me wrong though.

      quackchung in hindsight you are probably right. To many other birds about.

    • @markb8954
      @markb8954 Рік тому

      Correct. Birds aren’t going to nest where every other type of bird might be feeding. This project looks nice - house, feeder, plant stand, but doesn’t quite work. It’s best to decide what you want, make one of them.
