I got something better about Tentacool and Tentacruel for ya. Can you tell me a game or cartoon/anime where jellyfish aren't depicted using electricity that isn't Pokèmon? Yeah it only occured to me when I was watching some Jellicent and Frillish in Sword. Tentacool and Tentacruel are jellyfish and they are water/poison type unlike Jellicent/Frillish who are ghost/electric (I think. I know they aren't poison) and also jellyfish. Jellyfish in real life don't have electricity like electric eels. They inject a poison with their stingers. I thought that was cool that they were depicted more accurately. They could have easily made Tentacool and Tentacruel electric type instead.

I think for a lot of people Golem, Alakazam, Gengar, etc. would be on this list not because of their stats but because of trade evos lol
Any time I've used one of those Pokémon it was either in a Gen 4 game where I can use my DS and 3DS or in a ROM that's been modified to make them evolve by level up or stone instead.
They would have been on my list as well if it weren't for SwSh and Legends lol
I do a lot of emulated nuzlockes so I just modify the save to evolve them whenever I catch them, but only if they reach level 36 to make it fair
That was my issue for years growing up.
Yeah, I've never used to a trade pokemon. I didn't have any but Graveler when I did have someone to trade with and personally I never used a ghost type until Gen VI. I wish the Pokemon Bank counted as a trade, I don't get why it doesn't considering Pokemon transferred that way are treated like trade pokemon in every other way.

I used Primeape on my RBY playthrough, and he was pretty good. It was mostly because he was overleveled and had a lot of coverage TM/HM moves, but still.

I feel you on the "caught a shiny so I used it". The first time I used a tentacruel was in HGSS when I found a shiny tentacool (she was named Violet) and decided she had to come with me for the rest of the game. Same with Clefable in Let's Go when I found a random shiny that I almost didn't realize was shiny.

My first shiny was an Arbok in Crystal, which I found on Mt. Silver. I didn't even know shinies were a thing, and just caught it cause of the animation so I assumed there was something special about it.
Happened to me in Emerald, my first shiny pokemom was a poochyena that I evolved into Mightyena so they both ended being one of my favorites
That random shiny I caught in Let's Go was Parasect, I caught it as a Paras
same. in pokemon shield, i found a random shiny vullaby who would from then on vibe on the playthrough team as "sparkl bb" or some dumb name like that. she consistently found herself as death fodder, but it wasn't a nuzlocke so it's fine. iirc she evolved partway into the league.
Having a third person in the conversations of Mickey & Grunty boi was excellent! I hope we get other interactions like this.

You should really consider using Lord Helix, Kabutops, Primeape, and Pinsir. These Pokemon are too underrated and they can pull through. Pinsir is surprisingly bulky being able to tank at least two super effective physical moves. Omastar can actually be a good sweeping pokemon as well as Kabutops. Primeape is just overall kinda fun he hits really hard and makes me feel op when I have it.
Primeape will definitely be used a lot more with Annhilape existing.

Was doing a randomized nuzlocke (soul link with a friend) of fire red and we didn't randomize starters. My rival had the most busted overhyped charizard ever somehow, it wiped big chunks of my team more than once. Getting a kabuto (danger cake!) and building kabutops for the champion battle to put that hot lizard in its place was deeply satisfying.
I notice that a lot of these are good pokemon...just defensive/stall style. I think Mikey's explanation for Chansey probably applies to many more pokemon, as a result.
The VERY first time I used Gengar was Sword and Shield because you guessed it trade evolution. It was really fun using him, but I still just don't get that emotional attachment to him or Alakazam that most people have. It's like that with a lot of trade pokemon actually.
First time I used Machamp was HeartGold because it was fresh in my trading capabilities
I was able to use an Alakazam in SoulSilver because I have an original DS, a 3DS, and a copy of Diamond, but for the most part trade evolutions are completely out of the question. I'm very glad that they seem to be phasing them out since we haven't gotten any more since Gen 6 and the "trade" items that they added in PLA.

Gengar is the only trade evolution pokemon I've ever used and only cause i traded with myself 😂
I briefly used Magmortar in Legends Arceus because I love Magmortar and finally got the chance to use him since they removed the trade requirement. I also used Alakazam on my main team. In White 2, had I contined that specific save file, I would have gotten an Electivire, since I could trade with myself because I had both White and White 2. Those are the only notable trade evos I've used.
I once tried to make a SS run using only weak Pokémon I wouldn't normally use, so I actually have won a league using Beedrill, Arbok, Meganium and Parasect lol I don't remember the other two

Clefable was one of my first Pokémon Blue champions. She rocked. I think I used her because I liked the idea of a weird space marshmallow kicking butt. Bubblebeam, Psychic, Hyper Beam, and Sing was quite terrifying back in the day. Clefable has been my weird pink friend ever since 😁
Clefable has been one of my faves since Gen 1 as well, mostly because of Pokémon Stadium
I have a Clefable named Celebi. I caught it as a Clefable in the giant casem in black when I was younger
And its God tier cuz magic guard was in gen 4 its also very competitively viable

I find it hilarious that Gamefreak locked staryu behind the super rod when starfish are known to wash up on shore irl.
The only place I can think of that is near water early enough is before Rock Tunnel where you get Voltorb or I guess Cerulean City by Nugget Bridge?
@@Madadader there is also a patch of water in pallet town they could have used since it does lead out to the ocean.
@@aviatinggamer9051 i was exclusively thinking of spots of water near grass early enough in game. That grass is basically endgame requiring surf to access.
@@Madadader right. Finding a starfish based Pokémon in grass doesn’t really make sense to me. Maybe they could’ve made it like one of the caves with a section of sand in front of the water and on that sand you could encounter staryu.
I’m not saying it’s a perfect solution. But it’s better than what they did at the time imo.

It is indeed good, but it just requires a lot of grinding. Not a bad thing but my issue with it was that at least in leafgreen/FireRed that the move power points were really troublesome. Seriously like it gets scratch and low kick. If you want to use it for Brock then you are stuck to train in like 3 routes. All there is are Spearow, Pidgey, Weedle, Caterpie, Kakuna, Metapod, Pikachu, and Rattata. Most of these either take little damage from fighting types or they are just hard to survive attacks from. The only thing you could really train against it consistently is Rattata or Caterpie. To get a remotely good fighting type move you would have to grind like 6 - 10 levels or so to get karate chop.

I'll give Mikey one thing, he's the only UA-camr whose sponsor segments I actually watch, for the sole factor that I don't want to miss any of Grunty Boi's quite frankly amazing character arc.
I will point out that the Mew glitch in Gen 1 is easy as long as you're following the steps correctly, effectively making it a very good team choice since it has a very good typing and can learn any TM move.

I used a Vileplume in a Randomised Platinum Nuzlocke, and it was my longest surviving pokemon. It took it from a middling pokemon in my eyes to one of my favourites.
in fact vileplume isn't a bad pokemon, its got tanky stats to go with typing, plus its move pool has some good options, pretty much the biggest being Strength Sap

I've used quite a few of the Pokemon listed here through Randomized Nuzlockes. It's actually interesting just how much the "terrible" Pokemon can do when you have no other choices. And then there are the ones that are still just terrible...

You can get a Mankey before Brock. It's located in the grass heading to Victory road before entering Viridian Forest. It's a low encounter rate in FR/LG but they are there. I've exploited this for Nuzlockes
I had a Clefable on my first ever playthrough of Pokemon Blue. It was the first mon I got to level 100 and I used to just take it into the Elite Four and use Metronome over and over for my own amusement.
I think the only reason I've ever willingly used the Pidgey line was because I caught a shiny as my first catchable Pokemon in my first run of Let's Go Eevee. His name is Hermes and I love him.
I remember I found a shiny onix while in a cave hunting for a normal Charmander then low and behold a shiny onix appeared I didn't use it but I still have it
Years and years ago I got a random full odds shiny Pidgey in the Route between Johto and Cherrygrove right after the catching tutorial in Gold version, and he was absolutely required on my team after that. That save file has been long lost, but I remember him fondly.

3:44 I choose to argue about Clefable. While it definitely reached its best in Generation 6, I think it actually became viable back in Generation 4, when it gained the Magic Guard ability. Pair that with its toolbox move pool, and you have something that can get you through the game. Plus, it’s easier to catch than Munchlax. Duh.

I used a Jynx in my Ultra Moon playthrough and actually enjoyed it. It came in handy against Hau's Noivern and I also really liked its wide movepool.

Way back in the day in Crystal I got a Smoochum from the Odd Egg, and Jynx was really really useful. Getting an Ice/Psychic type that early in the game certainly changes things. It would be really fun if they brought the Odd Egg mechanic back in some form.
To be fair, Victreebel is actually really useful against Chuck's Poliwrath since it resists both its stab types. I actually kept a Victreebel on my team for about the whole game in my first ever playthrough of Soul Silver, and it did pretty well overall. Side note, I really appreciated how Soul Silver added the pokeathlon dome as a way to get evolution stones before the post game, which helped a ton of pokemon be more viable in playthroughs. In Gold and Silver, you can't get a Leaf, Water, Fire, or Thunder Stone until you're in the Kanto region, which means you can't use Poliwrath, Arcanine, Ninetales, Victreebel, Vileplume, Starmie, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, or Cloyster for your main playthrough, even all of those pokemon's previous evolutions can be obtained in the Johto region. Also, I have Diamond, but on my first playthrough, I did the whole game without a fire type at all since I picked Turtwig, and I regretted nothing.
That's not true at all. You can get leaf, fire, and water stones from specific npc's in Johto, when they call you on the poke gear there's a chance they offer you an evolution stone. Picknicker south of Goldenrod for leaf stone, fisher west of Mahogany for water stone, and the fire stone don't remember which pc exactly off the top of my head. It could take several hours to get one, but you absolutely CAN access those stones in Johto!

Exactly! My Weepinbell saved my first ever nuzlocke when I was playing soulsilver. I don't really know why I got completely destroyed by by Chuck, I think it was a combination of being underleveled (the level curve in Johto is really weird) and unprepared/cocky, but I ended up being taken down to my last Pokémon (Weepinbell) which somehow managed to pull through and save the run. I evolved it into a victreebell as a reward after that and it gained a status on my team like that of a starter. Wasn't too bad for the rest of the playthrough too

I don't know how people can do multiple runs over and over again but NOT use a bunch of mons they've never used before, like do people just pick Dodrio or Fearow every run and never pick Pidgeot? Seems like a way to bore yourself of the game quickly lol, and you can't really be sure the Pokemon isn't good or you don't like it until you do use it

But having used pidgeot more times than the other two combined, I can more than confidently say it absolutely works for a casual playthrough. Using one option dozens of times in a row and never using the others because it's "the best" has got to be the most boring and minimalist way to play a game ever lol.
@@BusinessSkrub I hate playing through Kanto, have never used Dodrio once, just that it gets better moves. I am a Fearow enjoyer as it carried me through Crystal and I feel nothing towards Pidgeot because it gets no good moves so I just box it

Kind of funni how a month later and we got annihilape, a broken evolution of primeape that is amazing for sv playthroughs
In my first silver playthrough I caught a bellsprout not knowing I'd never be able to evolve it into a victreebel. But that thing was a beast. Maybe no johto gym leaders are weak to grass per se, but weepinbell got me through the elite 4 and champion. I don't think she was even especially over leveled. In my next kanto playthrough, I made sure I caught another bellsprout, because if weepinbell was good enough for late game how good was victreebel? Very. It basically carried. Victreebel has been securely my 4th favorite pokemon ever since.
I feel like regarding Dugtrio most people only ever used it to beat Lt. Surge, just walk for a bit on Diglett tunnel until you encounter one, chuck balls at it since you're likely underleveled (Dugtrio was around Lv: 28 at that point I believe) deliver a royal beating with Dugtrio at the Vermilion Gym, toss it into the computer and move on.

You have gained me. I am a introvert and messy type. Messy type is the type that can learn a verarge of moves. Introvert type meaning that I'm an introvert. The moves I currently know are: game out, an introvert type move that can inflict a random statice effect on all enamies and boost my attack and special attack by playing a game so hard that it becomes real but all enamies will regain hp, cluter, a messy type move that causes damage to an emimie by throwing cluter at them, shadow ball and dazzling gleam. I'm week to: water, due to it cleaning things up and cleaning people, and bug, cause introverts don't like the outdoors and a mess containg food will attract bugs, type moves. The types that are week to me are: grass, gouhst, electric, ice, dark, poisen.

Ninetails with drought was my choice on a all fire team play through I had. Solarbeam with out having to wait a turn was incredibly helpful. Def worth using in a play through

I used a Ninetails and Kingler in my play through of Eevee and I have to say they were pretty decent Pokémon to use. I’ve been playing Pokémon for almost 20 years, and it’s awesome that even after all that time, I can find new enjoyment using Pokémon I’d usually give a pass to.
Personally using Kingler in Leaf Green to finally beat the game to complete and its amazing to use and kills just about anything that isn't Dodrio (too fast and Tri Attack can wipe out most of my team anyway) or has Levitate (cause ground type moves are godly on it)
@@pokefanalex9504 kingler has some decent attack and never realized it until I used him. Plus using those candies I made him a beast.
I've been doing a lot of this kind of thing lately, I just want to try and use different Pokemon that I've never used before in a game and not just whatever the newest gen ones are or the same ones all the time. I just try to build a viable team around type coverages along with different Pokemon regardless of looks or stats. You can honestly beat every game with just about any Pokemon, and I've done it.
Kantoian Ninetails is actually pretty decent, I am actually using one in my Pokemon Sword Nuzlocke that I haven't continued for a while, I should continue it, btw the Ninetails' name is Firefox

Ninetales was my ace in Sapphire. Loved that thing. Return and flamethrower were devastating. Don't remember the other two moves.
Dugtrio surprises me. In all my red playthroughs as a kid, I always went to Digletts cave and caught the Dugtrio rare spawn. I loved that pokemon so much.

I caught an Oddish early on in my Red team and wasn't sure if I would use it the whole time, but decided to keep it around for a bit. It then pretty much solo'd the S.S.Anne since most of the trainers use Water types and Absorb heals it. It evolved into Gloom before I was even done with the ship, so I just went "ok, I guess I'm using a Vileplume on this team". And now Vileplume is one of my favorite Pokemon.
I caught an Oddish in route 1 while playing LG Pikachu just so I can enter Brock's Gym and it hard carried the entire game more than my Pikachu did

Tentacruel was amazing because the poison typing makes it neutral to grass and its available in every single region when you get surf

It also gets Spore. And sleep gives better odds for catching than paralysis iirc
@@AlldaylongRock, true. I honestly didn't remember which Spore attack I mainly used (or even both, since some Pokemon can't fall asleep).
I also use Parasect as it can have damp ability (usum) which is good for chaining pokemon that use explode.
Eh if you're not running against the wromg type it's pretty durable and can deal a good chunk.
I like the pigdgeot. I know that is below fearow, but it's usefulto catch legendaries becouse sand attack.
It's pretty easy to reduce accuracy, and after make the combo damage + sleep.
Butterfree is also an excellent pokemon to capture others in an early game. Lvl 15 it has sleep pownder and is faster than abbra.

Man butterfree is such an underrated Pokémon. It’s an excellent setup mon getting access to tailwind and sleep powder. And with compound eyes boosting sleep powders accuracy it’s a good Pokémon. I usually run a focus sash

I repeatedly used Beedrill in Blue/Red playthroughs. One, I thought it was cool. Two, it was the only one to learn actual Bug moves which were effective on Psychic. If I remember correctly. I used him a lot against Sabrina.
Paras can learn a bug move but beedrill is better. Good choice.

A lot of the water types you listed have something to make them unique and good
if im being honest, i like using weak pokemon, i get bored just being able to one OKO everything, so i usually only use one or two actually good pokemon. an example is when i played black 2 for the first time, my team was emboar, braviary, ampharos, audino, zoroark, and maractus. this team may not be the best, but thats what was so fun, having struggling battles you barely manage to come out alive. it just gives more exitment to the game.

I certainly have used Vileplume and Victreebell on very recent teams. I did a Poison only run of Sword where Vileplume bodied Nessa twice and wound up beating Raihan in the Champion Tournament, and in Let's Go Eevee Bellsprout was my first pokemon that I caught (and used), I loved its overworld animation as Bellsprout (Weepingbell and Victreebell's were much less interesting) and it wound up have a game-long rivalry with Trace's starter Pikachu. So those 2 are very special to me now.
I'm old enough to remember when it was just Red, Blue, and Yellow, when Charizard was NOT considered a flying type, and Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres were very difficult to get, so Pidgeot was the flying type on everyone's team.

My favorite thing about this list is that six-year-old me beat the elite four using pretty much just Primape and Seaking. :) I think I used Pikachu to get through Misty, but beyond that, this is all I used back in the day before I really knew what I was doing. I certainly had no idea what STAB was, but I did understand typing for the most part.

I used Arbok in my most recent SoulSilver playthrough. It was better than I was expecting. It was the main reason I was able to defeat Whitney's Miltank more easily than usual!

@@kenmaken078 I'm guessing that yea. It also has Glare to spread paralysis and it can learn Crunch early on to help against Morty's Ghosts. Pity it can't learn any good STAB moves until late; Gunk Shot at a high level and the TM for Poison Jab is available only from the Fuchsia Gym in HGSS. On a related note I encountered a shiny Ekans in a VC play through of Crystal after beating Faulkner. I unfortunately had to let it go b/c I forgot to stock up on balls before going out into the wild ugh.

Fully evolved starters: my first Pokémon game that I played (I played Fire Red before it but the save button didn’t work) was Let’s Go Eevee and I never fully evolved the starters I caught
Forgot to mention Pokémon like Gengar since I didn’t know about trade evos or even trading with other players so I was trying to grind my Haunter to a Gengar and during the process I even tried Moonstones and Sword and Shield came out and after Speedrunning the game after being stuck in the Wild Area for a YEAR I found out about trading

I am a zookeeper in chicago and I regularly feed the hippos day old sausages so they have a taste of their home. I put strings on the sausages and swing them around the hippos they get so mad at me and scream but it's an obsession sometimes the hippos try and break out of their cages but I keep swinging those hotdogs in wide circles over their heads. Luckily my boss doesn't know I do this or my coworkers....

This has encouraged me to do a series of Red and Blue playthroughs where I use every evolutionary line. It should take me 14 playthroughs, plus a run through the Elite Four with Mewtwo.
It's surprising that you haven't used a Tentacruel, it's legit one of the best water types out there thanks to its special bulk and speed, add in it being pretty good offensively on the special side and it's a staple of nuzlockes for a reason although I do know that you don't like to Nuzlocke.
That's an interesting list. Considering Gen 1's popularity I'm always curious about which of those Pokemon never made the cut for someone's playthroughs. Sticking with the parameters of what you mentioned, the following are Gen 1 Pokemon I've never used in my main team: Raticate, Raichu, Nidoqueen, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Dugtrio, Persian, Golduck, Tentacruel, Slowbro, Farfetch'd, Dewgong, Cloyster, Kingler, Electrode, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Licktung, Weezing, Chansey, Tangela, Kangaskhan, Seadra, Seaking, Starmie, Mr. Mime, Jynx, Electabuzz, Tauros, Ditto, Porygon, Omastar, Kabutops, Aerodactyl, Snorlax, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Mew. I've played Pokemon games many times yet I've never had the opportunity or need to use the ones I listed here for my main roster.

They should make a variant for the Goldeen line. It still probably wouldn't be great, but I feel you could do a lot with the design concept.

Parasect is good for shiny hunting since it can damp as a hidden ability and can learn false swipe. That's like, the only thing though.

Haunter (I didn't know how to trade)
Aerodactyl (I wanted a fossil and I thought it looked cool)
Mewtwo (I was a kid)
Zapdos (I was a kid)
Dewgong (I accidentally killed Articuno)
Charizard (my starter)
(I also did catch moltress but placed it in the PC because it had the same type as charizard, I obviously chose charizard over moltress because this was right before the elite four and my charizard was a higher level than moltress)

Beedrill is very useable in the first Generation. Bug-type is good vs Poison, and Beedrill being one of 3 Fully Bug-types to learn a Bug-type move, is very useful against the Grass, and Poison-type gyms. If it can outspend Sabrina's gym too.
Yeah that's always the tricky part, it's a real mixed bag. I remember when I took Beedrill to Sabrima in Red it was faster than Kadabra but not Alakazam.
To be honest, I’ve probably only used 3% of all Pokémon.
Shocked he never used Slowpoke because allthough you can’t get it till far late game in gen 1 its so worth it with Amnesia boosting your special which is Special Attack and Special Defense and then Surf, Ice Beam, and Psychic which are all tms. Its really good and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t used it before

Arbok was decent in gen 1 specifically. It was designed around the move Wrap, and that move was broken back then, especially paired with Glare or Toxic. When they nerfed Wrap in Gen 2, Arbok had basically nothing going for it after that.
Funnily enough Clefable is one of my most used Pokémon as I’ve used it at least once in every play through of a game it’s available in
