Saw this game on sale for $28 and figured it was time to give it a try. Even as a DC fan, I stayed away from release day since everyone said the game was glitchy and sucked. I've been playing for about 10hrs and I love this game. As a fan I love the story. As a fan of the Arkham games I'm glad it looks similar but the game play is different. I love the different fighting styles of the characters. Love patrols in Gotham. Love the detective work. It takes itself less seriously than the Arkham games. It's fun. (I know this comment is four months old so sorry for dragging you back) I 100% agree, I also played after the game seemed to be optimised a bit so the lag and glitching wasn't too bad or often. I loved the story and ability to play with friend in Gotham. Honestly I kinda wish we had more optional bosses/stories with more of the rogues gallery.
I’m way late to this, just randomly decided to check it out on game pass. I’m not experienced with the Arkham games which probably helps in this case because I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this game. Only like 8 hours in but it’s just generally fairly fun, serviceable stealth and combat and a decent story so far. Waiting to play games and going in with no expectations and not paying $70 pays off haha
@@swingingfordearlifeI played it on release and I had a great time. I think I logged about 60 hours onto the game before I was done, and a huge part of that was just doing every possible crime I could every night because I found in fun. That being said, you should absolutely try the Arkham games after this one.
Punching bags of the week and bandwagoning have become a massive problem. The unchecked negativity completely disgusts me and has caused me to stop looking at literally anything about any game until I'm done with it.
Well. That also depends on your opinion on detective games and grind-fests. I personally prefer them to the Arkham style, even if this is not up to par I absolutely have enjoyed it more because that's my preference
@@humanistwriting5477 agreed, couldn’t finish Arkham knights because of the god awful bat tank missions, my friend and I had a great time running through this game together. If you weren’t expecting an Arkham clone it’s a fine game
It's funny you say that because I'm currently playing this right now and I'm enjoying it. The story is interesting enough to keep me entertained although I don't care much for the power level aspect of it because I feel like it wasn't needed. So it is making to go back and play through finally all three Arkham games and their entirety. I feel like right now I'm more enjoying that it's an open world beat him up game and I've not played one of them in quite a long time.
That's for being honest about how you feel about the game. So many youtubers act like games have to define the art of gaming, or the games are trash fire. It's okay for games to be okay.
I like the concept and the ideas like patrols on different nights to break up the story and how it’s presented. If there was one thing that really killed the story pacing of Arkham Knight it was how after every major story beat you were reminded there were other subplots. At certain points it’s like “Alfred who the fuck cares, Barbara just killed herself!”
I actually like this game. And I'm considering playing it another 4 times as I would rather play this game again then go near the god-awful trainwreck that was Suicide Squad: Kill Rocksteady Studios.
I’m basically a year late but yea. Dude simply didn’t want to criticize the game too much I think. 7.5 is a pretty solid/good game. Not “mediocre” like he said.
People only rate games from 5 to 10. Bc 7 is in the middle it means it's average. 5 or 6 would be equivalent to "below average" even though it doesn't make any sense lol
My best friend and I were so hyped for this game. We were pumped for a Arkham styled CO-OP experience and we had played really bad games before, so we felt we were adequately prepared. We preordered it on PC, but neither of us could have foreseen just how bad the performance issues were. I would get ~20FPS outside in the open world, and at some points it even dipped into the single digits. Once, it even dropped below 1FPS because one random enemy was slowing down the game BIG TIME during a fight. But inside buildings and underground, I would get a perfect 60FPS. The whole open world was woefully unoptimized to the point where I couldn't ride the bat-cycle without outpacing the world loading around me. I have a decent rig that is able to run Arkham Knight on ultra at a stable 60FPS, but it barely met the minimum requirements for Gotham Knights. We were disappointed by the massive technical issues that held back the game. The game on its own is average with potential, probably getting a passing grade of a C, but the technical issues really kept drove our score further and further down. When they introduced that patch in early November, the game got very unstable. We learned that if either of us crashed, we BOTH had to close and relaunch the game, otherwise the game would still think we were in a lobby together. When we beat the game, it crashed on the credits for both of us. We uninstalled it almost immediately. We didn't even wait for the 4 player CO-OP mode to come out, so I'm glad you covered that in the video. But you know that WB didn't have any faith in the game when it didn't get a season pass; hell, leaked screenshots from the Suicide Squad game shows that it already has a season pass. The way I see it is that WB had two options when it came to Gotham Knights: either give the devs more time to polish the game or to push the game out and move the majority of the team elsewhere. We already know what option they picked, so let's hope Suicide Squad is good enough to justify them sacrificing Gotham Knights for it.
Yeah, don’t put your hope too high for Suicide Squad: no actual gameplay in three years and at three months at the release, a leak that actually put together an awful plot and a battle pass, and this game has more red flags than hype. If you really have to rely on the sole name of the studio and his previous success then something is pretty fishy.
Many theorized it was to be a live service but with how bad that avengers live service game went, they quickly tried to turn it back into a single-player game hence all the resources and crafting, gear score things. Personally I've taken to sit back and watch triple A's shoot themselves in the foot over experiencing games just being alpha tested by the public, like many have started doing.
That is the issue at hand, they don't have more time. Atleast, not in the companies eyes the vast majority of the time. They say "I want Gotham Knights done in 3? years" and when that three years is up they can probably squeeze a delay or two but much more than that and they're bleeding money that could be spent on the salaries of workers on a better game. Which even hurts it more so with reviews, you release a 60ish hour game and the reviewer who NEEDS the clicks and views right away only can spend a bit of time playing it before they uninstall it and move on to the next game on their to do list that is likely coming out when the deadline for them to be relevant or in the case of big review sites, actual deadline for the review. There is also a massive echo chamber and more people like negative reviews than positive ones, because its more cathartic to see a thrashing.
The characters having a shared level seems very convenient and seems like it cuts down any grinding a ton considering you don't have to level up four different characters
Now I just want a Batman Beyond video game. It'd be so cool to have cyberpunk, batman, detective, super tech shenanigans. They'd totally ruin Terry by trying overly hard to connect it awkwardly to the more popular continuities, but it could potentially be cool enough as to be worth it lol
Man Gotham Knights' looks like something I'd really enjoy. You've sold me on at least giving this game a shot at some point if I ever get a nice PC or a PS5
the credits remind me of Pokémon omega ruby and alpha sapphire where in the credits it would have what Pokémon you used to beat a gym leaders last Pokémon there. so as it went your team would evolve and you'd have new pokemon, it was a cool sequence.
I still plan on getting this one and you kinda solidified what I felt the game would be. A decent game which is fun to a certain kind of person. Especially if you don't go into it trying to force it into an Arkham mold. A decent 7. I agree. 7's have a place in our libraries. Don't always need a A5 wagyu. Sometimes you can enjoy a 15 piece from McDonald's
Honestly you’re spot on. It’s a solid 6 or 7 that reallllly got hurt by the inevitable comparisons to the Arkham series. Nothing I plan on redownloading but can’t hate
I'm not joking when I say it is so refreshing to have a review treat games fairly. I know I commented something to this affect in a past video, but it's so rare. I really do like your videos man. Good work!
I get the feeling this was going to be a live service game, but the higher-ups put the kibosh on that when Avengers and some of the other live services started losing money
PLEASE GUYS PLAY ARKHAM ORIGINS!!!!!! It’s not by the same company as the good Batman games, but it’s story is canon and it takes place on one of Batman’s first Christmas’s!!!! It’s pretty much boss fight after boss fight I love the game so much
Someone who gives a great review instead of 20 minutes of bashing. Definitely subscribed and adding the game to my wishlist to pick up down the road. Thank you for your work!
I wish publishers would help keep games flowing smoothly in the right direction. The co-op and loot mechanics bog the game down and serve to get developers away from the core experience
Yeah the loot was basically wasted time and co-op needed to not be server based especially if said servers were janky too. They could have had costumes with colors and little tweeks. Then have elements be something you can swap in and out that already scales to the player.
You do great work Austin! Appreciate you taking one for us viewers for some of these games. Your "so you don't have to" series is one of my favs on UA-cam.
If they removed the leveling this game could have been much more fun. The best about spiderman and arkham is that you feel powerful by the end but getting taken down by lvl 50 thugs is really humbling and quite the drag
I watched this review and the avengers one. Great reviews but who is in charge of the background music on these videos it is incredible. The review got a thumbs up but using iceman’s theme from X-MEN COTA in the background? That got me to subscribe !
Got a cheap key for it and ended up having quite fun with it to be honest. Wouldn't play through it again or use NG+, but for one Playthrough it was totally fine. I agree with Austin saying that there should be a sequel if they do it right...the game definitely had potential.
yea i think if they work on the technical side, give you what you got at the end of the game at the start of the next one such as traversal, scrap the rpg aspects (power level stresses me out if its not maxed gear lmfao) and tweak the combat a bit(please just ADD PARRIES), it has some serious potential
Yeah game burn out has happened to me too. I started Transformers:Devastation in idk, 2018 or 2019?? Dropped it after maybe 2 hours. But then finally came back and played it a lot over Winter 2023 and fell in love with it.
Dude, that final charming scene that you were talking about was shown as a trailer at one point I think. I remember that was one of the first things I ever saw of Gotham knights and I thought the whole game was going to be like that, which I was not excited about. Having it be bookended as the last thing is way way better than being the first thing you saw lol
Holy shit I haven't gotten a notification on your account in a hot minute. Great video and really happy you reviewed this. I played it with a friend as our first game we played together in years and despite the issues it was a really fun and great time that ended in a nightmare fight where my friend who isn't as much of a gamer ended up saving the final hard mode fight flailing around like a madman and chipping her down. It's a great game and glad to played it. The sole thing I really wish is if it just had more. More polish, more content, more story. I know Suicide Squad is being done by another team, but I cant help but thank Gotham Knights for being that gateway game to get into gaming more with a friend I haven't had much time to really do anything with. It's special to me and sucks to see so many people dumpster it as hard as it is. It's what gets exhausting about the gaming community and the internet as a whole where it just becomes a never ending navigation of trying to avoid kicking a seemingly never ending amount of hornets nests over any and everything. Happy belated birthday and the last time I think I saw a vid you had blue hair haha. Another cool thing Gotham Knights had unexpectedly brought to me is your channel and I'm sure a decent backlog.
Finished it, but had 1 major problem. I couldn't "feel" combat. In other games you hit something or someone hits you, you feel rumble in your controller, not this game. Only felt the slightest rumble from the grapple, and when big characters charge at me. Also could not get the last most wanted enemy to spawn. Anyone know if that's changed? Ps5 btw.
The rumble part actually did, as of literally 4 days ago! It was part of that newest patch. Should have been in the game day 1 but /shrug gothamknights.bugs.wbgames.com/patch-notes
I know it's completely irrelevant and I'm being super pedantic pointing it out, but every time you said Arkham *Knights* hurt me just a little bit ;) I love these "I beat _ 100% so you don't have to" videos btw. Whenever you do one on a game I'm somewhat unsure about getting, it always helps me come to a decision.
Oh hey, 60 hours to 100% a title that mostly everyone thought was mid? That _does_ sound like paradise compared to spending 122 hours to 100% Cyberpunk 2077, a game that got (and still gets) a ton of flak, but me? I love it! We didn't get wallrunning or whatever features CPR might've promised before release, but my first playthrough that started on launch week and ended on January 19, 2021 was actually relatively painless, about 80 hours and I was more fortunate than most, got few bugs (though the ones that I did encounter were pretty nasty, including one softlock, thank Christ the game saves every five seconds) and enjoyed the story and gunplay a lot, not very often you see actual dismemberment systems in First-Person Shooters nowadays, picking up where Soldier of Fortune left, and it looks absurdly beautiful and colourful, a far cry from the piss filter-ridden days of the seventh gen of consoles. I decided to start a replay december of last year and I'm sorry-not-sorry, but I still love it, and in fact, it's when I decided to go for 100%. But what does all that have to do with Gotham Knights? Simple, if you enjoy the game, don't give a shit about what other people say, it really is just that.
It’s weird to me that people are comparing this to Arkham Knight as though it’s the gold standard and not itself a mid game that had an awful launch, a boring as hell story, an ending you had to grind to unlock and a gameplay loop that was drowned in tedious tank missions.
I remember when this game came out I had saved up alot of money but still figured to wait and maybe buy it months from now. Then i saw a friend playing it online and asked how it was. He said it was actually really good. I bought it and maybe 2 hours later knew I had made a mistake
Tim Drake may have the Adam Sandler look, but I still prefer it whatever they did to Jason Todd. Dude looks like every football player I knew back in High School. Dude looks like regularly listens to Alex Jones and Joe Rogan. Dude looks like he sells drugs despite having a trust fund. Dude looks like the human version of Knuckles in Sonic Boom.
One cutscene in the game has both players. When you're escaping from the mines and they're blowing up and youre being chased by the owl dudes. Your character opens up the door at the end and looks back before going through it. If you're with a friend, when your character looks back, your buddy runs through the door before you follow after him. Only cutscene in the entire game at least that I know of.
I enjoyed the game, while I can admit it’s not revolutionary it was fun. I enjoyed playing as Batgirl and Robin, and it felt kind of nice playing in an open world like Gotham.
Lets face it. DC has been mid for a good 10 years now with a few truly exceptions like Wonder woman, Joker, The Batman and Aquaman 2... Lets hope James Gunn can save this flailing brand.
I genuinely liked Side Story bits of characters, Nightwing struggling with leadership, Robin dependable on Batman's guidance trying to overcome it, Redhood's traumatic past and trying to be team member. Except Batgirl who can't remember her father's face? And questioning her photographic memory?😅
Now I really want you to play Marvel's Avengers. It would be very interesting to get your take on that game. Especially after seeing what you said about this one. I know the game is ending but it will still be playable so it would be interesting to see what you say.
Man i was so disappointed with this game. I got bored a few hours in and uninstalled it. I got it on a digital psn sale and still feel like i spent too much money on this mid game.
I didn't mind this game at all, but I'm not surprised it turned up on so many disappointed games lists. I'll be honest there were multiple times I wanted to stop playing and go on to something else (Whenever I did I couldn't think of anything else to play so I kept playing.) As I kept at it past the opening hours however I couldn't put it down and ended up enjoying myself. The problems I have with Gotham Knights I just wish it wasn't so grindy and enemies weren't so bullet spongey even when you're level capped it was annoying.
Great video Austin!! I wanted to like the game but enduring the whole bunch of bugs at launch I was experiencing was too much, for the first time in my life I refunded a steam game... By the way after playing Hi-Fi Rush I just want now a Harley Quinn game in that graphical style and embracing sillyness!!! it would be so cool!!!
I absolutely LOVE The Runaway!!! He's such a perfect concept for a new DC Western Hero! He fits perfectly into the classic guys like Vigilante and Jonah Hex! It's a perfect fusion of that era with modern sensibilities for a cool superhero concept!

I 100% agree, I also played after the game seemed to be optimised a bit so the lag and glitching wasn't too bad or often.
Been playing about 20 hours now from ps+ premium. It’s wayyyy better than the internet and reviews led it to be!
Punching bags of the week and bandwagoning have become a massive problem. The unchecked negativity completely disgusts me and has caused me to stop looking at literally anything about any game until I'm done with it.
That’s what I do now
If it keeps me entertained a few hours every morning after work and all night long on my nights off
It’s a winner
Think it’s gonna be awhile before we ever get a Batman game as good as the Arkham games if this is any indicator.
Sometimes, mid is okay!
@@austineruption
Not at $70 it's not
I like the concept and the ideas like patrols on different nights to break up the story and how it’s presented.
The game is actually called rocksteady:kills the arkhamverse.
Suicide squad is ass but it’s definitely better than GK.
@@mr.longjohn0014 nah gotham knights is arkham city compared to suicide squad.
The "mediocre zone" on a scale 1-to-10 should not be placed at 7.5. Why the heck do we need 6 shades of "bad"?
I’m basically a year late but yea. Dude simply didn’t want to criticize the game too much I think. 7.5 is a pretty solid/good game. Not “mediocre” like he said.
People only rate games from 5 to 10. Bc 7 is in the middle it means it's average. 5 or 6 would be equivalent to "below average" even though it doesn't make any sense lol
@@jimcarrey2866It sort of makes sense if you think about how grading works. 50% is a failing F, 90% is a successful A.
imagine if spiderman had to unlock his webswinging and wallcrawling in his game
Just so you know, the Archie MegaMan comics are amazingly fun and fit the tone of the games perfectly.
Batgirl's a tank because she hides all the damage in her bullet proof dump truck
Good thing you preordered so they know to do it again for the next game
@@TheMaskedWarrior92 They have a state of play for it today so here's hoping at 4PM EST.
Arkham Knight, singular! I couldn’t figure out if the pronunciation was comment bait but it finally got to me
The game WAS a live service game. Then they removed everything last minute.
Its fumny the titles are called playing (blank) so you dont have to. But it actually makes me want to play these when i watch the videos
Certainly one of the games released last year
The characters having a shared level seems very convenient and seems like it cuts down any grinding a ton considering you don't have to level up four different characters
Heard that red hood had non legal guns and immediately never gave it a second thought
Man Gotham Knights' looks like something I'd really enjoy. You've sold me on at least giving this game a shot at some point if I ever get a nice PC or a PS5
Tim Drake is not the newest Robin. That’s Damien Wayne. And Jason Todd isn’t a zombie.
I have mixed feelings about gotham knights character designs but man the harley quinn boss outfit is great honestly one of my favorites of her looks
This game is a five and you would still be charitable
Why not try to see the positives in stuff, even if it's mediocre?
@@austineruption These kids have no experience with Daikatana or Drake and the 99 dragons. Gonna go install a bunch of cringe mods.
the credits remind me of Pokémon omega ruby and alpha sapphire where in the credits it would have what Pokémon you used to beat a gym leaders last Pokémon there. so as it went your team would evolve and you'd have new pokemon, it was a cool sequence.
Good work!
This game is a solid 8/10 imo. I loved it
I get the feeling this was going to be a live service game, but the higher-ups put the kibosh on that when Avengers and some of the other live services started losing money
PLEASE GUYS PLAY ARKHAM ORIGINS!!!!!! It’s not by the same company as the good Batman games, but it’s story is canon and it takes place on one of Batman’s first Christmas’s!!!! It’s pretty much boss fight after boss fight I love the game so much
Ngl, kind of wanna read the comics just for the Runaway. That is one of the coolest hero designs I've seen in a while
i really hope wb decides that suicide squad shouldnt be a marvels avengers style live service title, but recent rumors suggest that they wont
Low key one of the best Harley Quinn designs in any medium.
The title feels like a challenge and I accept it
“it’s boring but it’s good!”
"This game is at least a 7, but I would probably never play it again" is certainly an interesting take
To be super fair to myself, I *very rarely* replay video games. They gotta be like, my absolute favorites.
@@austineruption That's fair, and It was admittedly really rude of me to phrase it like that, so sorry for my rudeness.
Someone who gives a great review instead of 20 minutes of bashing. Definitely subscribed and adding the game to my wishlist to pick up down the road. Thank you for your work!
This game is NIGHT AND DAY better than suicide squad. I actually really enjoyed Gotham Knights
The party's not over until I'm defeated!
*Spin kick*
KO!
At least it's realistic. One spin kick to the face usually does end a fight.
I see Austin's also being recommended all the based PC-98 music on UA-cam 🤣 Quality work as always.
Based is REAL
I watched this review and the avengers one. Great reviews but who is in charge of the background music on these videos it is incredible. The review got a thumbs up but using iceman’s theme from X-MEN COTA in the background? That got me to subscribe !
Belated happy birthday Austin!
Thank you!
@@austineruption Happy belated thanks for the content
Idk why this game gets so much hate. I personally love it. The style, the story, the characters i personally think are amazing.
No shot this shit was a 7. It's pushing a 5.5 at best.
I mainly played as Nightwing and Red Hood; and because of that, I had a blast. Finally being able to roam as Nightwing in Gotham was huge for me
Finished it, but had 1 major problem.
Should have been in the game day 1 but /shrug

Ok, I'd love if they went heavy into being a detective with The Question. An underrated hero with endless possibilities.
I know it's completely irrelevant and I'm being super pedantic pointing it out, but every time you said Arkham *Knights* hurt me just a little bit ;)
I love these "I beat _ 100% so you don't have to" videos btw. Whenever you do one on a game I'm somewhat unsure about getting, it always helps me come to a decision.
Yeah I know I messed up. I sure said the word "Knights" like 100 times though.
That Akira-inspired bike is reeling me in. I really don't want to play the DLC, but that bike.....
I’m at 16:10 and you’ve genuinely convinced me to go back and replay the game. If I remember I’ll update how it went
As someone who likes games with good itemization it's so sad to see it executed such that the most positive thing I have heard is "you can ignore it."
I like the costumes aspect, but it just feels arbitrary most of the time.
Sometimes these games make ME feel like my dog, after Ive tricked him into taking his meds wrapped up in cheese
Red Hood having superpowers is so dumb
It’s weird to me that people are comparing this to Arkham Knight as though it’s the gold standard and not itself a mid game that had an awful launch, a boring as hell story, an ending you had to grind to unlock and a gameplay loop that was drowned in tedious tank missions.
I remember when this game came out I had saved up alot of money but still figured to wait and maybe buy it months from now. Then i saw a friend playing it online and asked how it was. He said it was actually really good. I bought it and maybe 2 hours later knew I had made a mistake
That sucks. I hear no one talking about GK. But people are always talking about AK.
I play it if it goes on sale again
...maybe
Say what yall want, but gotham knights is INFINITELY better than Self-deletion squad:delete the justice league
If you pay close attention during gameplay, you can randomly hear someone say something followed by “eh?” 😂
in less than 10 years well get a make your own batman create a character game with leveling loot and 3 man co op and itll be a 77/100
I genuinely liked Side Story bits of characters, Nightwing struggling with leadership, Robin dependable on Batman's guidance trying to overcome it, Redhood's traumatic past and trying to be team member. Except Batgirl who can't remember her father's face? And questioning her photographic memory?😅
I liked this game a lot more than most! It was an imperfect but fun game and I think a lot of people expect perfection from every release these days

Thank you for the deep dive! I always love this series! Also happy birthday!
I wanna try it but I feel like I should wait till it’s like 70% off or something
Can't wait to see you play the Suicide Squad game
Great video Austin!! I wanted to like the game but enduring the whole bunch of bugs at launch I was experiencing was too much, for the first time in my life I refunded a steam game...
By the way after playing Hi-Fi Rush I just want now a Harley Quinn game in that graphical style and embracing sillyness!!! it would be so cool!!!
On steam this game is currently on sale in honor of Batman's birthday 💀
I liked Gotham Knights a lot. It was fairly fun. Batgirl was my go to and she just felt super engaging, the story was fun, overall I enjoyed it.
I absolutely LOVE The Runaway!!! He's such a perfect concept for a new DC Western Hero! He fits perfectly into the classic guys like Vigilante and Jonah Hex! It's a perfect fusion of that era with modern sensibilities for a cool superhero concept!
