  • Richard Marvin Butkus (December 9, 1942 - October 5, 2023) was an American football linebacker, sports commentator, and actor. He played football for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL) from 1965 to 1973.
He was invited to eight Pro Bowls in nine seasons, named a first-team All-Pro six times, and was twice recognized by his peers as the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year. Butkus was renowned as a fierce tackler and for the relentless effort with which he played. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most intimidating linebackers in professional football history.

A lot of people rag on the Bears because they haven't had a lot of recent success in the NFL. But you have the Butkis Award, the Man of the Year award named after Walter Payton and the NFC Championship trophy is named after George Halas.

He was a monster. He was nearly as big as some of the NFL linemen in those days. Very athletic too. He took it personal that a team would try to run in the middle. He has a quote to that affect.

Add to that the fact that the rules of the game in the 1960's and 1970's were FAR different in terms of hitting allowed/enforced than they are today ... back then "late hits" and truly PUNISHING, injury-inducing cheap shots were ROUTINE -- and largely ignored by the officials. Today's players may be "faster," and set all sorts of statistical "records" because they are so much better protected and the NFL has basically turned into pass-happy street football with pads, but they have NO CLUE about the toughness required to play football back then !!!

Make No Mistake. This Man was a Stone Warrior, Every Sunday of His Career. What alot of Fans don't realize is that at least Half of the Highlights You're Watching of #51 are in a Losing Effort. The Bears during Butkus career only Won 48 Games. They only had 2 Winning Seasons in His 9 Years. Yet, He was D P of the Y in '69 and '70, on a 1-13 Team and a 6-8 Team. He Recorded 1020 Tackles, 22 INTs. and 27 FRs. Supposedly, Butkus Recorded 18 Sacks in '67. 6 Time All Pro and 8 Time Pro Bowler. He gave Everything He had on Every Single Snap that He Played. Outside of Walter Payton, I know of No Other NFL Player that can claim that Distinction, especially while Playing with Bad Knees. And He finished 3rd in Heisman Voting in '63, while at the U of IL. IMMHO, Dick Butkus is One of the Top Ten NFL Football Players of All Time.

I idolized Butkus growing up! What little football I was able to play when I wasn't injured, I was honored to have played the "Mike" position. I've had many debates with younger folks about who would beat who when comparing the football players of yesterday to the football players of today. I'd explain to them that today's football players wouldn't be playing to win the football game, they'd be playing just to survive the first quarter. When they'd laugh, I'd simply say "youtube, Dick Butkus, we'll finish this after you've seen him play". Needless to say, nobody ever came back willing to argue that point after watching the greatest linebacker of all times completely annihilate an opposing team.

The amount of tackles he racked over his career is somewhat misleading. The Bears defense was built around funneling the ball carriers towards Butkus so he could finish them off. Yes he did have to actually make the tackles, but it helps when the rest of the team sets the victims up for you.

I wish you guys would do an Urlacher video. IMO Urlacher is actually easily the best pure 4-3 MIKE to ever play. When Urlacher started his career after moving from SAM LB to MIKE LB under BLACHE he proved he could play for tackles, sacks, TFLs, FFs, and run defense. What is even more impressive was After LOVIE SMITH showed up and utilized Urlacher as a TAMPA2 MIKE LB where Urlacher was still able to accomplish what he did under BLACHE, buy also under Lovie Smith Urlacher was able to both drop into ZONE coverage and MAN up with opposing offenses #1 WR, TEs & HBs in the passing game. All while standing at 6'4" @ 260 pounds and running a low 4.5/40. In Lovie Smiths TAMPA2 defense Urlacher had more INTs than most CBs & DBs and URLACHER had more INTS than most other LBs had SACKS or TFLS.. That's nuts. I know people like to get caught up in name recognition from yesteryear but If you actually watch Urlachers tape I don't know how anyone being honest couldn't realize Urlacher is at least the best BEARS MIKE LB ever. I WOULD LOVE to have seen Urlacher in the middle of BUDDY RYANS 46 defense. Urlacher would have given that 46 a whole other dimension of ability defending the pass that Singletary just didn't possess. Once DAN MARINO picked on Singletary with the passing game for 4 quarters on MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL in 1985 and it gave the rest of the league a blueprint on how to pick the Bears 46 apart. Urlacher would have been a whole other monster to deal with in the middle of that 46.
