- Richard Marvin Butkus (December 9, 1942 - October 5, 2023) was an American football linebacker, sports commentator, and actor. He played football for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL) from 1965 to 1973.
He was invited to eight Pro Bowls in nine seasons, named a first-team All-Pro six times, and was twice recognized by his peers as the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year. Butkus was renowned as a fierce tackler and for the relentless effort with which he played. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most intimidating linebackers in professional football history. - Спорт
Rest in peace Dick Butkus.
He was the Defensive Player of the Year in 1969. For a team that was 1-13.
Even today, there is and was, none better !
I’m from illinois and played football my entire life and it really amazes me that more young players don’t know who he is. World wide LEGEND but in illinois he’s a God
The BEST EVER, no one can touch his shoes ! NO ONE period.
14 games was all they played in a season back then, making the numbers more impressive
As a kid scared to death of him just watching him on t.v. The greatest linebacker of all time!!! I mean the Butkis Award!!! That says it all!!!
Defensive Player of the Year in 1969. The Bears were 1-13 that year. Amazing accomplishment.
😮😊
Good point
A lot of people rag on the Bears because they haven't had a lot of recent success in the NFL. But you have the Butkis Award, the Man of the Year award named after Walter Payton and the NFC Championship trophy is named after George Halas.
There was only one name, growing up in the '60s and '70s, that everybody agreed was the toughest in the NFL and that was Dick Butkus
When i grew up Butkus was everyone's favorite. No matter what team you supported. Thats respect.
He was awesome a pleasure to watch
The most violent player in pro football history based on facts
I have information to back my claims up
Ok. Your point? Back when football was violent. Not like today's flag football
Jack Tatum is up there too
Mr Butkus was one of my idols as a kid and the reason I played football. I suspect he was an idol to many young kids who watched him play. There simply wasn’t anyone better than Dick Butkus. May you Rest In Peace!
He was a monster. He was nearly as big as some of the NFL linemen in those days. Very athletic too. He took it personal that a team would try to run in the middle. He has a quote to that affect.
A warrior
Imagine being a reciever in the huddle and getting your number called for a play going across the middle against Butkus. No thanks, I'd pull a hammy breaking the huddle
It had to hurt after awhile.
Add to that the fact that the rules of the game in the 1960's and 1970's were FAR different in terms of hitting allowed/enforced than they are today ... back then "late hits" and truly PUNISHING, injury-inducing cheap shots were ROUTINE -- and largely ignored by the officials. Today's players may be "faster," and set all sorts of statistical "records" because they are so much better protected and the NFL has basically turned into pass-happy street football with pads, but they have NO CLUE about the toughness required to play football back then !!!
best of best period
Make No Mistake. This Man was a Stone Warrior, Every Sunday of His Career. What alot of Fans don't realize is that at least Half of the Highlights You're Watching of #51 are in a Losing Effort. The Bears during Butkus career only Won 48 Games. They only had 2 Winning Seasons in His 9 Years. Yet, He was D P of the Y in '69 and '70, on a 1-13 Team and a 6-8 Team. He Recorded 1020 Tackles, 22 INTs. and 27 FRs. Supposedly, Butkus Recorded 18 Sacks in '67. 6 Time All Pro and 8 Time Pro Bowler. He gave Everything He had on Every Single Snap that He Played. Outside of Walter Payton, I know of No Other NFL Player that can claim that Distinction, especially while Playing with Bad Knees. And He finished 3rd in Heisman Voting in '63, while at the U of IL. IMMHO, Dick Butkus is One of the Top Ten NFL Football Players of All Time.
I idolized Butkus growing up! What little football I was able to play when I wasn't injured, I was honored to have played the "Mike" position. I've had many debates with younger folks about who would beat who when comparing the football players of yesterday to the football players of today. I'd explain to them that today's football players wouldn't be playing to win the football game, they'd be playing just to survive the first quarter. When they'd laugh, I'd simply say "youtube, Dick Butkus, we'll finish this after you've seen him play". Needless to say, nobody ever came back willing to argue that point after watching the greatest linebacker of all times completely annihilate an opposing team.
The greatest middle linebacker of all time.
People would have to give up a LOT today to be as tough as him.
Butkus literally scared entire TEAMS, by himself. Players got phantom injuries in order not to face him❗️
He will be missed!
Greatest player ever
He didn't tackle you he decimated you
I believe it was Deacon Jones stated in a NFL film that Butkus wasn't trying to put you in the hospital, he was trying to put you in the cemetery.
G.O.A.T 🏈
6'3" 245lbs is still pretty big...especially for a linebacker.
This MAN HAS 3 AWARDS NAMED AFTER HIM AT THE
HIGH SCHOOL/ COLLEGE & PRO- LEVEL
ANYONE ELSE??? NO.
THAT MAN IS CHICAGO FOOTBALL. ( ESPECIALLY, ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE) (LIKE WALTER PAYTON IS ON THE OFFENSIVE SIDE) MISS THEM BOTH RIP GENTLEMEN
nobody is better than Buktus
He never missed... he got hold of you and you went down, rather violently
Legend...
What kind of name is Butt Kiss ??? Ill never forget that comercial.😂 It made me admire the man , a man that can laugh at his own self is admirable. Especially a guy that was such a fearsome player as he was.
NOTE A very good friend of mine played against Mr Butkus in College. My friend played Fullback at Michigan.
I asked my friend one time who was the best player you either played with or against while you were at Michigan? Without any hesitation he said "Dick Butkus and added He was a Man amongst Boys""
It's like Chicago breeds best linebackers!!! Singletary,etc.,etc.
Roquan Smith, Urlacher, Briggs too!!
Ray Nitschke
Bill George too.😊
Greatest MLB to ever play the game! Jack Lambert is a close second and Ray Lewis is maybe 3rd
middle line backer vs. outside LB. they were both the best, Butkus and LT.
LT was a steroid/drug product…Dick didn’t need that crap!
Having a guy of his caliber and yet the Bears rarely saw games beyond regular season.
He was my childhood hero and idol….wish I could have met him in person….RIP you one of a kind GOAT!
Butkus was big for a LB for the time at 6'3" and 245 lbs. He as big as many offensive guards for the time.
Dick Butkus was the standard. And without question the face of the mighty monsters of the midway.
There will never be another
The greatest.
God may decide to make a better linebacker than Dick Butkus some day, but He hasn't done it yet - #51 = ~the~ greatest!
videos with computer narration are disappointing.
Yeah, this would’ve been better with no volume whatsoever except the pads hitting the players
Sadly, the Bears teams he was on were crap. Him and Gale were the only standouts.
Deacon Jones said Butkus wasn't trying to put opposing players in the hospital, hecwas trying to put them in the cemetery.
the computer-generated narration ruined this video
The amount of tackles he racked over his career is somewhat misleading. The Bears defense was built around funneling the ball carriers towards Butkus so he could finish them off. Yes he did have to actually make the tackles, but it helps when the rest of the team sets the victims up for you.
Great video and a tribute to a Legend!
Now, lose the AI voice!!! The Chicago Beers are a great team and NFL Films leader, Steve Saybol would attest to that...
(Jiminiy Christmas!!!!!)
This fucking AI voice is on so many of these videos everywhere on UA-cam.
And it sucks.
You talked of University of Illinois but not one Pic of him at UofI......odd
Fair-o-see-us? Since when do we mispronounce ferocious? (Fur-o-shus) 🙄
The AI voice bothered me too.
glad someone else noticed the AI voiceover crap. Get a real human being that knows how to pronounce words. Oh wait I forgot...the educational system started going downhill in 1964, like most other areas
I wish you guys would do an Urlacher video. IMO Urlacher is actually easily the best pure 4-3 MIKE to ever play. When Urlacher started his career after moving from SAM LB to MIKE LB under BLACHE he proved he could play for tackles, sacks, TFLs, FFs, and run defense. What is even more impressive was After LOVIE SMITH showed up and utilized Urlacher as a TAMPA2 MIKE LB where Urlacher was still able to accomplish what he did under BLACHE, buy also under Lovie Smith Urlacher was able to both drop into ZONE coverage and MAN up with opposing offenses #1 WR, TEs & HBs in the passing game. All while standing at 6'4" @ 260 pounds and running a low 4.5/40. In Lovie Smiths TAMPA2 defense Urlacher had more INTs than most CBs & DBs and URLACHER had more INTS than most other LBs had SACKS or TFLS.. That's nuts. I know people like to get caught up in name recognition from yesteryear but If you actually watch Urlachers tape I don't know how anyone being honest couldn't realize Urlacher is at least the best BEARS MIKE LB ever. I WOULD LOVE to have seen Urlacher in the middle of BUDDY RYANS 46 defense. Urlacher would have given that 46 a whole other dimension of ability defending the pass that Singletary just didn't possess. Once DAN MARINO picked on Singletary with the passing game for 4 quarters on MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL in 1985 and it gave the rest of the league a blueprint on how to pick the Bears 46 apart. Urlacher would have been a whole other monster to deal with in the middle of that 46.
How great was Dick Butkus ? How much time do you have !!!!!
It’s Saybol! 😲 😲 😲 😂😂😂
How high is up?
Probably better to narrate yourself instead of using a machine - Butukus???
better than saying it the reall way..butt kiss
Automatic click off. Why? Robotic voice, probably A I
Where do they get these narrators these days? The guy can't even read and pronounce the word "notably"?
It's ridiculous. It must be a computer voice.
AI
I hate these computer generated narrations! It ruins a good film.
‘Fairo see-us’. Ferocious. Great. Stupid AI.
Why talk about the University of Illinois while you are showing Bears footage. Sync your video and narrative. RIP Dick Butkus...one of the five greatest linebackers of all time.
Did he ever get a super bowl ring?
The Bears weren’t a strong team…do some research
NEVER, THEY HAD NO OFFENSE!
Dick butkus number 1 wilbur marshall number 2
What a dumb question.
The AI voice needs to go.
AI sux
I'm so tired of the phony Ai voices..
I grew up in the same south side of Chicago neighborhood as Butkus. We all looked up to him and were saddened when he passed away. I watched him play for Chicago Vocational when I was 10.
I hate this fake AI voice... everywhere
Butkus was the greatest, the AI narrator, not so much. Please stop.
AI narrators suck. Quit being lazy.
These bot voices continue to butcher the English language. Stop with this crap already.
Why a computer generated voice ? I stopped watching as soon as this fake voice couldn't pronounce " notably "
I dunno I think ray nitchke could be in the same league.
LT. IS THE GREATEST LINEBACKER OOF ALL TIME .HANDS DOWN.
The all coked up team captain .
Sorry pal, if Butkus snorted all the coke that LT did, we'd all be dead.
Nah, LT!!!!!
Best linebacker in history? Those who faced LT would say differently, and with good reason. He was just as big as Butkus, just as strong as Butkus, just as mean as Butkus, and twice as fast as Butkus.
I'll take butkus, and Lambert.
And high on cocaine!!!
And mainly, only a pass rusher.
Nobody else could tackle like Butkus.
LT = D R U G S
I disagree.
Good riddance to OJ the killer
