    I'm a newbie artist and I use Sketchbook! It definitely takes some practice and there was a learning curve, but I love it so far! I've tried Procreate on my friend's iPad a few times, but I'm not sure if I'm as crazy about it. Again, it's most definitely a learning curve so I would probably just need to spend more time on it. Sketchbook has been a great tool as someone who is just getting into digital art and also for someone who's a grad student and needs to save their money 🙃

      The only thing Sketchbook Pro needs is a.reference window inside the app so this way you don't need to split thr screen to show the picture reference next to Sketchbook Pro. You should absolutely give Krita a try. Just 15 Minutes or so, try the brushes. It blends super nice, got realistic brushes, pixel brushes, filters etc. There's for example (L) for lighten and (K) for darken when you paint (which let's you go up or down by 10% of value). It does most things, and painting really well.
    Procreate 5 is awesome so far, I tried the beta a little bit. I'd say my PS brushes imported like 80%. Can't be much closer if you ask me.
    Also, Affinity Photo has gone a long way, is still not perfectly there but I think in a year or two Photoshop can be skipped for me, been using it for 15 years and I really don't like 120 bucks a year when I can pay 50 or even 0 and OWN the software.
    Anyway, thanks for the video. And nice drawings in the new Diablo Artbook! Mine arrived yesterday. :-)

  • @odiram
    @odiram 4 роки тому +42

    Procreate is my favorite for general sketching and painting just for the brush engine and for not being tethered to my pc while using it. When I have to do something more intensive I still fall back on photoshop for its photo editing tools, but for comics, which is something I want to get into, I don’t think anything is in quite the same league as clip studio paint at the moment. In addition to the kind of brush stabilization and perspective tools other art focused programs have it has a lot of tools that no others have, like built in posable 3D figures, a bunch of tools for quickly laying out panels or setting up different kinds of speech balloons, the ability to set your strokes as vectors and edit them after making them, and some really unique options for the ways you can use reference layers when coloring. It would be perfect if I could use csp on my iPad, but unfortunately from what I’ve heard the mobile version isn’t optimized particularly well, and it has some issues with file handling.

    • @cucumberworks
      @cucumberworks 4 роки тому +1

      Actually the mobile version of CSP is quite optimized in my opinion. Many people don't like the UI of the mobile version(it's exactly the same as the desktop version). I personally don't find that to be an issue at all, especially if you are working on the 13 inch iPad. I'm really glad that they choose to take the full package of CSP to the iPad, unlike the crippled version of photoshop. You can even import all the brushes and 3D models into CSP mobile, and all the perspective, filter and ruler functions are in there. The only thing that I think is missing is the higher refresh rate. I think CSP runs less smooth than Procreate but it is really barely noticeable. It does charge a monthly fee but you can use the 1 month trial period to give it a try.

    • @sociallyresponsiblexenomor7608
      @sociallyresponsiblexenomor7608 4 роки тому +1

      @@cucumberworks Yeah the monthly fee is the killer for me; it's like just sell access to the damn software. If you "Have to charge for updates" (Despite procreate doing fine and not doing that) then offer like, a license for the current version at a flat fee, and then a "Free updates for life" payment option that costs more, and one that lets you pay less but just pay to update it to the current version.
      The game organiation tool "Launchbox" did that method and they did Phenomenally well with sales and were able to almost triple the price of their product because it grew so much so quickly and was making so much money lol.

I also make some GIF animations and don't forget you can add text. The only issue is that depending of the quality and size or ur canvas it's limit the number of layers .And you can wrap, distortion and some other effects, the options for effect layers is limited compare to others but have the basic important ones the warp effect in procreateis good but is not has good has Photoshop. And I noticed when u resize lines or copy and past it tends to pixelate and loose lightly some quality. But overall is awesome I been using it for 4 years and getting better and faster.

    I'm saying this right now, so no novice digital artist make the same mistakes like I have, don't start out with photoshop. The only reason why I did was because I was given a three year course of it during high school and had access for free until I had to eventually pay for my own when I graduated. It was tedious to keep up with the payments since I wasn't doing any commissions (still not btw), so it was difficult to keep having it.
    The best alternatives in my opinion after years of tinkering with other programs is the ones he mentioned in video, sketchbook pro and procreate. Now if you're not a fan of the interfaces both programs have, i highly recommend clip studio paint, there is a 6 month trial if you wanna see how it goes before purchasing it and word of note, they do a seasonal sale where you only have to pay one time $25 in contrast to their regular price $49, either way, it's worth the price. It may look complex at first, but their website provides many tutorials and has free assets you can try out. And to those who are hearing about Krita as well, it's as great as photoshop, not a program for me, but I have seen many artists create beautiful artwork out of it.
    However, the best tools of art though is just having fun and not let anyone make you doubt on what you can create.

The advice about the ipad is great, only problem is I don't have the money for that lol. So I have to do sketches by hand, scan them, then use software other than PS (Since they took it away from me with the updates) and finish it that way. You said that procreate has stuff available with a monthly subscription...they don't have subscriptions because they don't believe in the model. Sorry if I misunderstood your comment. I just don't want others to think it has any sort of subscription.
    Perspective grids are in the program: You go to the Wrench (Actions) > Canvas > Drawing Guide.
    For Transforming and warping in Procreate you can use the Liquify tool and it has a selection tool. Liquify is under Adjustments > Liquify.
    If you select something with a selection tool it does provide a resizing option.

      Its a very viable business to sell original artwork and canvas paintings! I hope that I didn't give the impression that you cannot. But in the field of concept art for video games, you have to work digitally. Most people don't know how many times you have to change or rework your paintings, and that just doesn't work in an office environment. Also, you can't use oil paint in a video game studio.

    Procreate has its own form of quick menu. I have mine set up so that I can just touch the screen with my free hand, and flick my finger in a direction to activate the frequently-used feature that would normally be buried in a menu. For example, I can flick my finger and have the image flip horizontally, or change to a specific brush I use a lot, and so forth.
