Drive and Shame. Two films that weren't nominated for Best Picture, but will be regarded as classics one day soon if they aren't already. Winding Refn and McQueen's best films to date (and that includes 12 Years a Slave)
Yes, 'The Artist' and 'Hugo' did win - but they're films about a romanticised view of the film industry. The old white men liked them because they're nostalgic (though both very good and worthy of some acclaim), The fact that Senna didn't get nominated is an absolute travesty.
for me Rango was the best movie of the year, really liked the settings and the characters. btw did you see the yellow sea by director Hong jin Na? it's very well done and honestly deserves way more attention than the little that it is getting.
the "very best view" of the oscars is...miles away not watching it, and not looking on the internet or papers the next day to see who won but in the south of france drinking red wine...thats where I was ha!
Apart from the fact that Gary Oldman should have gotten the Oscar, I was very very happy to see Christopher Plummer finally take one home... so yes - smile on my face here. :-)
@navylaks2 I'm trying to wrack my brains to think of a way of introducing a new methods to the silent approach without disrupting what looks like a fluid movie. It's going to be months until it shows up on television so I best not worry myself over it for a while, anyway.
While I tend to agree with the whole analysis the good doctor gives, I sometimes get the impression that his suggestions are just a touch jingoistic. It's the Oscars, it's always going to backslap Hollywood produce. Wishing for it to change is like wishing for the 70s to happen again - it ain't going to happen ( shame ).
@navylaks2 Can you recall these moments that rehash Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton? I would've thought setting an (almost) silent film in the context of a world that is slipping away presents good value for creativity. Can't reinvent a hundred year wheel surely? :O
@navylaks2 The Artist wasn't creative? How is it that Mark rates the film then? Singular moments from the trailers look very slickly acted and choreographed.
@ladsrus Have you seen the set everything has to be ultra bright to put up with the darkening of the 3d cameras it looks ridiculous and bright green, I'm sure the film will be popular anyway but they started planning the film ages ago and they cant stop the process of 3D although I bet they wish they could with their stupid hefty 3D cameras!
I preferred the descendants but hey what do i know It kinda felt also Dr. Kermode that u only liked the Artist because it was silent and in Black & White but when looking back it was not a great and excititng story but as predictable as Mission Impossible 4
@frogtastic1000 Why not watch it and see for yourself?. Personally I think it's an excellent film with great performance from Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller.
For fucks sake will ye give it over going on about "We Need To Talk About Kevin". Surely I can't be the only one who thought it was shite? And by the way just cos Rango didn't have Cuban subtitles I'm not sure that qualifies it as shit film Kermo, afterall Its a film for kids. Why don't ye get yer wee bairns to watch Chico and Rita and see which one they prefer. Delighted to see The Artist win as its the first time in YEARS a quality film was recognised. Also Drive is overtly homoerotic;)
I can't help but feel like the academy is overcompensating for years of ignoring arthouse and foreign language films by giving The Artist so many awards. Not that it didn't deserve them, but it comes across as slightly disingenuous. Most people will see it as a gimmick film, which it is anything but.
wow, didn't know kermode liked We Need to Talk About Kevin that much

I quite enjoyed the little snippets with actor/actress interviews. Very well done, honest, and true. And Billy stole the show AGAIN.
What a creepy smile at the end
Never smile again!
please don't smile again!! gave me some goosebumps lol ;P
With Hugo and Artist and the whole presentation of the Oscars it had an air of old school Cinema classic feel.
The Artist will become known as 2012's Driving Miss Daisy.
And A Separation deservedly won
for me Rango was the best movie of the year, really liked the settings and the characters.

@frogtastic1000 I apologise on behalf of my nation for not making a film with nineteen explosions per second.
Apart from the fact that Gary Oldman should have gotten the Oscar, I was very very happy to see Christopher Plummer finally take one home... so yes - smile on my face here. :-)
Rango was brilliant, how dare you Mark?
I have a new suggestion for the 'Chilled Out' feature - Mark's smile at 3:44.
Truly chilling.

Nice smile
I'm a little disappointed that Kung Fu Panda 2 didn't win best animated film, but Rango was a worthy winner.
I has no problem with Gore Verbinski as an Oscar winner.
The reflections on the window to his right look like it's on 3D
It's a good thing that Kermode is a young black woman, otherwise that "old white men" comment might have seemed a little ironic...
No its just you Frogtastic

We Need To Talk About Kevin no nominations was shocking!
Agreed.
@Chopofiev lol, grumpiness.
Viva Chico & Rita!!
Where can I see the Kermods 2012?
@navylaks2 Can you recall these moments that rehash Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton? I would've thought setting an (almost) silent film in the context of a world that is slipping away presents good value for creativity. Can't reinvent a hundred year wheel surely? :O
@frogtastic1000 Surely it won best actor support you mean?
If Ayrton Senna was American .....whole new story ! Oscars all over the place ...its a masterpiece etc , etc !
@TheNylonStrings
Drive didn't deserve anything.
@navylaks2 The Artist wasn't creative? How is it that Mark rates the film then? Singular moments from the trailers look very slickly acted and choreographed.
@MrE5785 Kermode isn't white. He is Kermode.
3:44 scared me a little....
Make some cgi film that everybody likes and it gets an Oscar.
@frogtastic1000 If ever someone has given me a reason to watch Hugo, it's that!
Disappointment was the Meryl Streep win. Fine actress...but as Thatcher?!
I preferred the descendants but hey what do i know
It kinda felt also Dr. Kermode that u only liked the Artist because it was silent and in Black & White but when looking back it was not a great and excititng story but as predictable as Mission Impossible 4
@MrE5785
He's not that old...
@frogtastic1000 Why not watch it and see for yourself?. Personally I think it's an excellent film with great performance from Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller.
@Chopofiev Grumpiness*...
Muppets.
@agmor1 agree...completely unnatural character...also,too much symbolism and 'arty' shots which were too distracting to let us feel anything.
how did harry potter not win a single oscar?
For fucks sake will ye give it over going on about "We Need To Talk About Kevin". Surely I can't be the only one who thought it was shite? Drive wasn't nominated and Gary Oldman was robbed. I still think The Artist is a little overhyped...
(and Drive didn't get anything)

Still Annoyed Nicolas Winding Refn wasn't nominated or best director
@TheNylonStrings Drive wasn't that great.
@aamoran10 you
first
'old white men telling us what good films are'...awkward haha
So good that I didn't watch them.
Gary Oldman was robbed.
