    And yet our maritime patrol numbers of P3 has been cut to a future 4 P8, and our IPV patrol boats have been cut from 4 to 2. With increased poaching every year in our territorial waters. Great idea, Labour Government!

      $ P-8s can cover a lot more ground

      @@nigelwatkins558 Not nearly enough. P-8's are cheap considered against how much of our trade and economy is based ship bourne transport. We need more. 12 would be a responsible number considering the probable 40 year service life and the staggered MLU that will be needed and airframe attrition and that there are few alternatives and this production line will be shut down.

      @@nigelwatkins558 I know. my Colleague is currently taking over a job from AF due to lack of pers. BUT the pacific is becoming less stable. We need the ocean more than most due to our trade dependence. We have no other platform integrated into NZDF that can do these roles, or touch the roles covered by the ACF, or the other MPA platforms like the Friendships/Andovers. When we realise the position we are in it will be too late to order them. We can sort out the recruitment issues later. Or at least try to address them now but get the airframes. Later could be too late and we are too vulnerable to get this wrong. Ships take as long to order, longer to bring up to FOC and the scoping/speccing phase is almost a decade usually for other nations. For illustration - We need 6000 port visits facilitated by 800 ships per year, these ships come from all over the globe and service other nations that are of greater market importance than ours. Hull insurance alone is 1-3% PA. If those ships go near a war zone the insurance 1-3% is per day. If merchant ships are shot at there is no cover. Unless they have a military escort. In order to free up our ships we need more aircraft patrolling home waters AND we need an overhead escort to qualify and even then they can null and void. Exports are 33% of our economy. And all our production rely on energy imports. Without a significant strengthening we are at significant risk. Thats before we even take losses.

      @@shanemartin2491 bro the defense force has a capability plan of what they need if they need it they'll note it down. Sadly we have been dropping the budget for the past 20 years giving us a defence force that doesn't have enough manpower to maintain the current fleet.
      New Zealanders need to change how they think on a millitary as it isn't just to kill people and is in my opinion one of the best assets we have.
      People need to understand that it also takes awhile to build up the institution, structure, facilities etc.
      A problem can happen tomorrow and the millitary can't be built in a day to fix it it takes years

    Since 1965 these beasts have been dragging around the skies. Given the size and importance of New Zealand’s maritime responsibility we should surely have a larger fleet of more modern aircraft?

    • @NighthawkNZ
      @NighthawkNZ 4 роки тому +3

      They have been recently been upgraded and are on par with the P8. Which is a gap filler till the P-8's come on line in 2023

      @@NighthawkNZ Good thing considering the size of our territorial waters may increase in the north. Gotta keep those pesky CCP buggers out of our waters, they like to sniff around where they don't belong.

    • @NighthawkNZ
      @NighthawkNZ 4 роки тому +3

      @@SASCAT1972 no but the DCP2019 also states that ere will be other aircraft to supplement including long range maritime drones. And the P3 aren't going to disappear in 2023 they will be around for a few years after that.

      @@NighthawkNZ And yet nothing concrete has been decided on.And as I pointed out, less ship and planes. One extra Opv whenever that happens, doesnt equal two ipv its replacing. 4 planes can't be where 6 were. Nor can two frigates be where 4 once we're.I think the less availabilty our P8 and frigates are, the less likely they will ever be ever deployed in a war zone and put at risk, good plan.😁

    10/07/2121 Very interesting. As an Aussie and aware of a certain countries predatory fishing fleets, have often wondered how much of Australia's fishing zones are being plundered without due regard to legislature nor environmental needs. Keep up the good work.

    pretty cool but these aircraft are really starting to show their age. A modern developed nation having to take pictures of a boat with a hand held camera doesn't seem right to me. Those P8s better not be too far away
