As a 10 year old seeing that concert my parents reminded me that I would sit in front of the large living room audio system and play this CD of serious hits love for hours on end and I also remember singing some songs to my cat. Yup the music touched me at a young age and I love this vinyle compilation 2016 and Nick Davis did a great job.

Well… attended the not dead yet show in Berlin having travelled from UK and just behind the Olympicstadium is the open air arena where the 1990 Berlin show was filmed. Always wanted to visit that place and so was a great day to visit there then watch the concert in the Olympic stadium that night. The hotel receptionist in Berlin attended the 1990 show… On the DVD when the crowd burst into a huge spontaneous applause and Phil says “we haven’t finished yet” brilliant moment

That’s so amazing. I would do the same. I would love to see that place. I think Peter played in that same bowl recently.

The 2019 remastered CD is the best sounding version of this. I have both that and the original 1990 and i've compared them and its a light and day difference, warmer and a lot more bass but without muddying (if that's a word) the instruments and dynamics. The 1990 on the other hand sounds bright with no bass. The original Phil Collins studio albums do sound better than the remasters though.

Ahhh this tour. It is a wonderful memory for me.
I have been a huge Phil Collins / Genesis fan since I was a kid (I was born in 1976). In 1990 Phil Collins came to my home city of Vancouver as a part of his But Seriously tour. At the age of 14 I was having a tough time with my parents recent divorce, so I was super psyched about this show. Unbeknownst to me until the evening of the concert, a teacher friend of mine who knew somebody at WEA Records managed to secure me a backstage pass to meet him before the show.
We received explicit instructions ahead of time that there were to be no autographs or photos. So it came as a shock that when it came my turn to meet Phil he asked if he could sign anything for me. All I had on hand was my ticket so I presented that and asked if he would mind signing the back of it, he did so and then asked if I'd like a picture - thankfully my teacher friend had brought a camera!
While Phil was chatting with other people in the meet & greet line I was looking at the signature on the back of my ticket in awe which read "To Shawn luv Phil Collins". Because I am legally blind having 10% vision in my right eye and none in my left since the age of three months (I told him the story of this briefly during our conversation), in order to read printed material I need to hold things a centimeter or two away from my eye, and this is how I was reading the signature. I thought nothing of it at the time and proceeded to enjoy the show from our front row seats. It was fantastic and I even had the mic held out towards me from Phil to sing a bit of "Take Me Home".
A week after the show I was still floating around in a daze of happiness and arrived home after school one day to find a package delivered via courier. When I opened it I found this massive theater sized tour poster with a huge autograph to me from Phil who used a sharpie for maximum visual contrast. Insanely cool! My Dad had it professionally framed and glued in place so it would last. As a young teenager dealing with my parent's recent and messy divorce this was a much needed and welcome solace. I was on cloud nine for years after that.
Over 30 years later I still hold this as a key formative moment in my life that helped get me through a lot of challenges yet to come.
Cheers & thanks for the walk down memory lane!

The live single they released was also a special edition Carousel type of box set. Excellent version of The Roof is Leaking on there.

My only complaint is that "Who Said I Would" is not a hit. The live version of it from Serious Hits Live released as a single doesn't necessarily count. Hang in Long Enough should have been in its place instead or better yet I Wish It Would Rain which was played earlier I believe in just Australia and Japan.

Went to 3 shows during that tour, 2 at Madison Square Garden and one at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. One of the NYC Shows he sang The Roof Is leaking and it was great to see him stray from the standard setlist.

I just discovered this channel-nice to hear opinions and trivia from fellow Phil and Genesis fanatics! I love your inclusion of the various album and cassette artwork. Owning CDs deprived me of most of the cool album artwork. I saw two of this tour’s Chicago shows and they were amazing. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I would agree that Serious hits live is a greatest hits album, and the one we had until the true greatest hits. Still, to me Phil Collins (as well as Genesis) was always better live than in the studio. The live versions had way more power. As for the cassette/vinyl/CD, there were many good songs, but I always skip Seperate lives which I don't like at all. I also miss songs such as Hang in long enough, find a way to my heart and I wish it would rain down (both are also missing on the DVD). Of course you can't put everything on a cassette/vinyl/CD, but I still wish we could have gotten a more complete version, kind of like Genesis did with The way we walk and Live over Europe.

Although I had known and liked PC before, it was 'Serious Hits...Live!' which made me ultimately a fan. In the context of his discography, this album marked a kind of turning point. Despite or just because it was such a huge commercial success with 15M worldwide sales, it led to being seen as an alternative greatest hits package for potential future record buyers, causing his four previous studio albums to suddenly stop selling well thereafter.

This has to be my favorite album for sure.. and as you pointed out is essentially a greatest hits. Not only that, something has to be said about the energy felt from it, being a live show and feeling like your there. You can just picture the unbelievable excitement. Interesting fact on this purchase.. I bought the album on CD during the week it was released, then spent the next few months convincing my Dad to buy a CD player LOL. It just made that moment even more special when I heard it play through the new stereo system!

Just want to say thank you for all the Phil & Genesis videos(especially the longer videos!) would definitely recommend listening to “I don’t care anymore” and “do you know, do you care” side by side since you said you’re struggling to really enjoy “hello I must be going” it’s a much darker side of Phil that I really enjoy. Put Another Record On!

I have home videos (well, my parents do) of me as a 1 year old watching this. Apparently I would just sit in front of the TV and watch this VHS of the Berlin for hours haha Colours is the highlight of the show for me! Probably because it's really the only double drums part of the show and it's also a great live song for sure. This was his last real setlist where he kind of threw in deep cuts - Everything after that was essentially the same setlist/show haha it would have been cool on the recent tours to hear Lorenzo, River So Wide, Colours, or at least maybe a little more from Both Sides? I get it, he's gotta play the hits but I'm sure him and the band could have tried to learn at least 1 deep cut on his 3 last farewell tours hahah

This album is so good. The songs feel more alive compared to their studio counterparts. I will get a vinyl copy of this someday!

I generally prefer studio albums over live versions but this ranks among my favorite live albums by any artists.
Some of the live versions are as good, if not even better than the studio versions! “One More Night” on here sounds incredible! The keyboards sound stronger and even the drum machine sounds more refined.
Even “Another Day In Paradise” is equally as great as the regular studio album version.
The musicianship heard on here is near flawless and the sound system sounds absolutely incredible, considering the time this was recorded and released.
I generally do appreciate and enjoy live albums albeit if in the sense of hearing familiar songs through a different perspective but generally I prefer studio albums over live albums but “Serious Hits Live!” is absolutely magnificent!
I do enjoy the live recordings that made it on his reissues but they sound inferior to “Serious Hits”. That’s how great this album is.
Definitely a contender for my all-time favorite live albums.

I didn’t see anyone talk about it and I didn’t hear you say it:
There is one song he played only a few times on the tour, one of them was in Los Angeles in September 1990:
    The Roof is Leaking
Unfortunately he never released it. It is the most amazing version. I prefer this version more than the album version and also the Live at Perkins Palace.
If you don’t have the 1990 version, you must get it. Love it.

Very ironic, for me, that you reviewed this album right now because my wife purchased the 2019 vinyl reissue of it for me as my Valentine's Day present. I can't wait for Tuesday to open it. I am a little nervous about the skipping issue...

Well after listening to my new copy of Serious Hits Live on vinyl, I'm happy to say that Something Happened on the Way to Heaven does not skip at all!
Unfortunately, due to those inner sleeves that they package the records in, there was a big scuff across 'In the Air.' It doesn't skip, however you could clearly hear a crackle every time the needle goes through that part of the groove. It lasts for about the first half of the song, which I suppose is tolerable. This record is not easy to come by and it would be more of a hassle for me to ship it back so I'll live with it, begrudgingly. I wish they gave us a nice poly-lined inner sleeve like the Genesis reissues (my wife also got me the Nick Davis remix of Foxtrot on vinyl!)
