I grew up with the KF series. The ancient city is an absolute masterpiece. This is definitely the best one, but 3 will forever be my favorite. Thanks for the passionate and entertaining content about this game and helping urge new fans to discover a truly unique experience this series offers. Also always had a fan theory that the heladin soldiers missing sword is the battle sword you find in the queens fortress impaling a widda against the wall.
Been a while since I've had the attention span to sit down and listen to hour long pieces. You did an amazing job with this. Gave me a understanding and allowed me to feel how the game plays through. Even though I won't be able to play these games myself I still enjoy the gags and bull you play through here. Keep up the good work boyo.
Oh, oh my... You don't even know how happy you've just made me by mentioning you streamed this... And after checking turns out you've streamed all King's Fields... And even Shadow Tower... Oh my... I'll continue watching this one later, maybe after I'm finished with all the streams.
amazing as always!! I personally have no attention span to play the game for that long so having a look into it like this was awesome for me. Thank you so much, also the beard was awesome
Man I love the King's Field games. They are probably among the most underrated games ever at this point in time (I think the original System Shock got it's due credit in recent years). KFIV is top 3 FROM game for me. Such an excellent dark fantasy dungeon crawler RPG that really has no other titles wish similar feel than other KF/FROM games (by this point they had moved quite away from Ultima Underworld, which was the initial inspiration for KF).
It's cool to see FS's early days and how they've grown since then and have put in a lot of easter eggs from this series. I like how some of their newer games still have the same vibe (you can tell with DS2 especially how much influence KF had, compared to the rest of the Souls games, at least). I have a thing for older PS1 RPGs like these, a weird sense of nostalgia despite never having owned a PS1 as a kid.
They really should, although I don’t like 1st person games that much as I used to, I got more adapted to 3rd person gameplay. I think they should stay true to their roots if they ever make a reboot of this IP.
Maybe not souls though… combat is important but not the focus. Combat in KF/ST is the obstacle to exploration more like a Metroidvania. Obviously a modern KF would feel better in pace and control but still will be focused more on atmosphere.
@@jeisonpineda2404 i meant for the remake/revival. make it like souls-like But in first person. From soft has the souls formula on point already and proven to work. So why not use that for the revival of kings field. I mean they already did it on the new armored core
2:09 Big Kings Field fan, but I'm actually going to disagree slightly with what you say here. I think the slow movement speed and clumsy combat of KF4 is intentional, but I don't think the lack of dual analog support is. Armored Core is a much more action-centric series, but AC went 7 games before implementing dual analog sticks into their controls. By the time of KF4, to my knowledge they hadn't made any games with that feature - Shadow Tower Abyss came out 2 years after KF4 and was the first major example of Fromsoft implementing dual analog sticks. I'd argue that Armored Core actually has a better design explanation for lacking dual analog sticks, since you're literally piloting a machine - it makes sense that it wouldn't be fully intuitive to control. Still, as soon as they'd made a dual analog control system for ST:A they immediately started using it for AC. I think they could have kept the slow, cumbersome combat and feeling of disempowerment without sticking to their old controls, it was just a limitation born of the fact that they were a small, independent developer that had to make games cheaply to make their money back.
The Lawful Blade/Moonlight Sword? I played the PAL version and the translation was really off compared to the NTSC one. Items and NPCs with different names and dialogue, it seemed to confuse Lord Myu (who was never mentioned) with Septiego (also called Sir Salvor in the PAL version) too. If I recall correctly you find the Sword master in a cell dead and Myu lying dead in the battlefield after making his last stand as the darkness flooded in but in the PAL version it seems to refer to Myu's body as Septiegos and it's just a mess..
I went from playing Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage made by THQ / H20 back in 2001 on the N64 to playing This Kings Field game which was also my first edition into the series and FromSofts games. Both these games have so many hidden lore and item aspects to them, and I cannot get enough of it! One day I hope to make a review video of Aidyn like what you did here for Kings Field with added information from interviews I have been doing with the developers. Your humor in this is amazing! Love all of the music and descriptions! I just learned about that hidden katana you showed us in this video and now must boot up my emu to go and get it. The old WR holder of the game here on UA-cam meauxdal also showed how if you didn’t want to go to the poison area of the first cave / mine dungeon you could just kill the little girls and dog if you really wanted to for no real extra bonus and be able to get the fire spell from a Rolly Polly bug if you’re interested. Really appreciate all your effort on this review as I can tell it took quite some time and I will definitely stick around to see your future projects! Other than other FromSoft games (currently playing Elden Ring still on PC) what other games do you like to play that are similar to the Kings Field series?
Thank you for your compliments! It means a lot. As for other games that are similar to King's Field, there aren't really any that are similar enough to King's Field in every aspect. Ds2 is the most King's Field-y game I've played but it controls completely different, the similarities mostly lie in the art style, tone of the game, and the overall jank of Ds2. Shadow Tower 1 looks to be similar to early KF but it changes some mechanics, Shadow Tower Abyss adds guns and changes even more, but the core gameplay seems to still be there, so if you've been through every King's Field game already then you could give those a shot. I bet there are a lot of older dungeon crawlers that feel like King's Field but like I said in the video I don't know about any of them. Dungeon Keeper nails the visuals but is incredibly far from King's Field on a gameplay level. (I also never played it myself but I've watched a playthrough) Then there's this game for the GBC I have called Shadowgate Classic, I never played it but it looks like a neat dark fantasy dungeon crawler so maybe it fits, and the only reason I ever got it was because it reminded me of King's Field. That's about all I can think of though, and overall I just recommend Ds2 and Shadow Tower, or the rest of the King's Field series if you haven't played it yet. There's an English patch for the first game as well (I remember there being a save bug with the patch so also install the patch afterwards www.angelfire.com/art3/weissvulf/kings_field_japanese_to_english_patch_download.html)
Other FromSoft titles other than souls and king’s field as well as stuff like Arx Fatalis. Nowadays I’d really recommend Lunacid, Monomyth, Dread Delusion and Devil Spire… all on Steam but a really really really high recommendation for Lunacid.
This game was the test for gamers. No wiki, no UA-cam, no nothing. Only you and your brain……such a fantastic game and going to dust off the ps2 again to relive my raging young memories lol
I beat the whole game and I can honestly say I didn’t regret it I’m happy I played it and beat it. The game has its confusing moments but the atmosphere and art design and attention to detail is worth a journey through if you haven’t played it. It’s very “fantasy” in every sense. Good video. I knew that from software made a ton of games similar to dark souls before they found success with demon souls but I’ve never even heard of this game before. Gonna emulate it myself and give it a try now.
You missed the optimal early game choice, option D: kill the girl. You then get the Fire Crystal from a nearby Pillbug for free, before ever setting foot in the mine. You can sell the extra Rock of Life for 500 gold. There's no in game penalty for doing this. That's why I love this game so much! i didn't find out these secrets out until multiple playthroughs.
I love the Frozen Forge area and especially the music there. I keep a save file at just before it, so I can pick up and explore the forge whenever I want.

Love your video. I've fallen on one of your videos before and now just found your channel again. I love Shadow tower (Ps1) and couldn't find much about lore. I would love to see anything related to Shadow Tower.
A Shadow Tower video has a 50/50 possibility, I played maybe 1/3 of it months ago but it got a little overwhelming for me at the time. I still think it's a cool game though it would just be hard to finish. Lore wise most of the story is present in the game's manual (which I was able to find online one time) and basically describes you as a villager of a town that suddenly disappears and got replaced by the Shadow Tower, you venture into it to find your adoptive parent if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure Abyss expands on this (all I know is the opening) where the Tower (possibly a different one) is an ancient structure that gets fed sacrifices... And that's how you end up in there. It's pretty interesting, though I can't guarantee I'll make the video unless I really like Abyss

I really enjoyed this video. Back in the day, I moved out of my mom's house too soon and was poor. I had an original Playstation, but very few games. One of which was a used copy of King's Field (US). I loved KF! I had long been a fan of RPGs because you can get more hours of enjoyment out of them. I felt KF was the perfect example of a transition to 3D. The first person perspective meant that XP wasn't just some number, but something you had to develop by playing the game and learning enemy's movement patterns. And the music was top notch! KF2 (US) wasn't as interesting to me. Primarily because whereas KF had a good amount of verticality and interconnectedness, KF2 just seemed like one flat field after another. Seemed less interesting to me. KF4AC seemed like a return to the formula I liked. It felt a bit more linear than KF, but the graphical polish was very welcome, and the music was better than ever. Any time I pick it up for yet another playthrough, I always have to let the original title music and intro playout for the music. Funny thing is that I have yet to play a modern Souls game. Not a single one of them!
I dunno man, KF may not be a horror series, but it can definitely be horror adjacent lol, especially the first three. There are just some times where they cross into that weird creepy area that only PS1 games really have, especially with the super close render distance 😂
in all seriousness, I love king's field IV's soundtrack, all of it is so good it's actually one of the best sound tracks ever, some are not really fitting and feel less serious but they're still too good to not be in the game
I know this vid is old, but this game must have cost you a pretty penny. unless you've had it a while. Nasty, nasty game though right? Swords are modeled so sick in 4. Looking back, if i had anything to to do with KF4 I would def have made it more violent. At least blood spurting from wounds. More in line with say, Elden or DS3.
I was lucky enough to get it in 2018 or so for around $14 (disc only), I didn't realize how crazy expensive it's gotten in the past few years which is a shame for people looking to get into the series and can't emulate
@@dragondaddykushala7133 No its the other way around most open world games indeed tends to have mediocre level design (BY design) because the player has to be able to traverse or navigate the giant area from one point to the other, whether it is by using a mini map guide or by pattern recognition, this completely destroys any type of challenge and often removes vertical geometry. If you study how most triple A studios create large open world you'll notice they're often made be both and flat easily traversable. This is not the exception its the rule.
You're wrong!! I HAVE played it! Hahaaa! (But to be fair I played in 2010, after I found out that Demon's Souls was a spiritual successor to King's Field)
@@sozaj I got into it from Dark Souls/wanting to play more FromSoft games (this was around Ds2 time so there weren't as many "Souls" games, not sure if I mention that in this video), so any way you got into it is cool, since it's a pretty obscure series now. Hell I would be excited if the newer Elden Ring fans started looking back on these old titles (although pretty unlikely)
I would like a brand new entry to this series with the original KFAC OST composer. Only a few quality of life chamges should be made. I want to just be dropped into a horrific situation with like zero guidance and boss arenas a total surprise, sorta seemlessly integratred into the rest of the game. No hand holding or pussy gamer shit. I want a new Kingsfield to keep it real. Ill pay $100 for game + DLC. Gladly. Come on Fromsoft! I'm asking to give you money

in all seriousness, I love king's field IV's soundtrack, all of it is so good it's actually one of the best sound tracks ever, some are not really fitting and feel less serious but they're still too good to not be in the game
I can't believe troll_face_gay made it into this work of art.

just been digging up ancient tech only for this gem, guyz🤣hyped as i was for first time see imaginarry er bosses
yup
I know this vid is old, but this game must have cost you a pretty penny. unless you've had it a while. Nasty, nasty game though right? Swords are modeled so sick in 4. Looking back, if i had anything to to do with KF4 I would def have made it more violent. At least blood spurting from wounds. More in line with say, Elden or DS3.
I was lucky enough to get it in 2018 or so for around $14 (disc only), I didn't realize how crazy expensive it's gotten in the past few years which is a shame for people looking to get into the series and can't emulate
Could you guys imagine a new kings field with today's graphics with a huuuuuuge open world? God I'd scream like a lil girl
open world king's field is the worst idea I have ever heard
@@Aromese you must not get out a lot then or watch the news
No more open world please, open spaces sure but open world completely destroys the beauty of level design.
@@franciscor390 not if it's done correctly your picking the mediocre many over the quality of the few
Fellow King's Field Enjoyer 🤝
@@Cryveil Demon's Souls is what got me interested in giving the series a try. :)
You can tell this guy's a From fan, he even took inspiration from them when he made this video with all its self-indulgent timewasting.
Imagine this as a game in the Metaverse !
I really want to like kings field. You just move so slow. Something like lunacid is much more enjoyable to me.
Dark Souls doesn't feel so hard anymore 😬
nice adaptation of darks souls to ps1 emulator
So kimd field is first pwrson dark souls limited to dumgeon crawling.
souls games didnt even exist back then
You do understand this has the same creators as the souls games
Too bad I wont live to see a sequel
