Fun trivia: The subway is actually the MARTA train in Atlanta. At the time of filming it was brand new, and I think not yet even in full service. The station where Snake is captured is what until recently was the Georgia Dome/Phillips Arena station. At the time it was the Omni International station. I used to stop at that station all the time when I had season tickets for the Atlanta Thrashers and always thought of Snake every time I rode that escalator.
It's the weirdest thing to see new scenes from a movie you first watched when you were 12 years old. I'm 47 and I never saw this before! Maybe they'll release another new scene from this film when I'm 84. The Blade Runner deleted scenes are incredible.
Same here! I've been a fan of this movie since I was 12 years old as well. I'm 35 now, and i'm just now seeing this scene in it's entirety. I knew it existed though. I kinda wish there was a director's cut on blu-ray with this scene in it.
Indeed, although it’s worth noting that Carpenter rescored this deleted scene for the re-release it first appeared on. The actual theme they were going to be used is on the soundtrack, it’s called “The Bank Robbery” a great track, one of my favourites on the album!
One of the things I love about this movie is how anonymous John Carpenter makes the police....they're nothing but anonymous black suited figures in helmets and face masks with automatic weapons. If we saw their faces they would be more human to us...the choice to put them behind anonymous black riot masks was excellent.
I think this should have been kept in. It shows an aspect of Snake's character that I didn't know existed. He worked with someone. Trusted that person. Risked his life to save that person. Maybe that's part of the reason why Snake became as cold and solitary as he did. Either way it was a great scene and a good way of showing people that Snake has/had a heart and that he actually did something to earn his imprisonment.
He said something similar to brain when hey first met, when Brain ran out on him four years earlier and told snake you were late and snake replied "we were buddies" You knew what type of person snake was from that scene.
if you read the novelization , snake was a highly decorated special forces soldier , then during the glider mission over stalingrad his commander gassed him and his troops thats why his eye is sensitive to light , his family was also burned alive by goverment troops after being falsely accused of being infected with the russian "crazies" virus , wich is what was responsible for the massive crime rate jump. ......snake isnt concerned with money just getting back at the goverment , hence even though he gets pardoned or pulls off a succesful bank heist he keeps doing it.
Justin Credible John Carpenter said this opening scene confused test audiences and weighed the film down a bit. And it also helped build the legend of Snake more by not knowing his back story by removing this. It's those mysterious characters that we know the least about that we wind up loving the most, case in point The Man with No Name, Boba Fett, etc.I love this scene by the way, definitely gives his character a bit more depth but I can see why they removed it. This spells out Snake right away, where we go through half of Escape from New York trying to figure him out.
squidd81 Lol wtf are you talking about Kojima has stated multiple times that Snake Plisskin was the inspiration behind Solid Snake. Why the fuck do you think he named Snake Iroquois Pliskin in MGS2.
In “They Live” the police looked like here. Using anonymous figures as threatening enemies was a recurring method in Carpenter’s movies: Watch the gang members in “Assault”, the ghosts in “The Fog”, the Crazies in “Escape From N.Y.”, the homeless people in “The Prince of Darkness” or the aliens in “Ghosts on Mars”. It’s great how Carpenter made these faceless masses really creepy!!!
Kai Thomas That's what really creeped me out about the Crazies, you never saw them up close or what they really looked like. Never heard much about them and what they do - which made them all the more scary as the imagination of the audience takes hold.
I'm praying for the day when they make some "Escape from New York: Revisited", where they add this as an opening scene to show us Snake's personality; a badass loner with a sense of morality who doesn't bail on his friends, and then once this scene is done, the opening credits begin. They could do something about outdated computer screens too, but that's just a maybe...
Agreed. But Carpenter has said that "Escape From New York" was supposed to be a "Sci Fi Western". And Snake's character was in part modeled after, spaghetti western characters (the kinds which just appear out of nowhere)- specifically Eastwood's "Man With no Name" Joe/Blondie. There was also a scene, where Snake was supposed to lift up his eye-patch toward someone- to reveal his missing eye. But the scene was either never filmed, or was taken out from the final cut of the movie.

There may be no private transportation left and the only method to loose their tracks is rerouting trains in a high traffic location out of schedule. The maps in the subway car Snake and Taylor are in suggest that whole states have been rearranged or governed in districts.

hey friend, as a fan of more than 40 years of this being my best movie of all time, this is the frist i read of this, where can ifind what you are referring to ?
It's great to get an insight into what drives him through that scene...because I always felt that scene right at the end when he destroys the tape seemed counter productive. But it gives people more of a sense of the type of world (with the imbalance in wealth distribution) that they are living in, and it justifies Snake's desire to not aid in its survival.
Haha, every 80's urban movie had to have a jump over the turnstile scene. And there was always one character that had an affected limp. Cool intro but I can see why it got cut.
I wouldn't have minded it being in the film. It kinda showed snakes loyalty to friends. Yeah, he's a badass, but shows (like he says in the movie) a little human compassion :) Top 5 favorite movie of all time
such a well made scene. it should have played before the opening titles. kinda like a bond movie. this scene shows a side of snake we don't see in the movie. love everything about this scene.
Thanks, I was wondering where this was shot. Was guessing BART but only because they were saying SF, just didn't look like any BART station I remember :-)
@@mannivormelker3765 Nah. MARTA trains and stations in Atlanta, like my man Eric said. I knew a guy that was there when they were filming these scenes.
Snake could have escaped, but he had to go back to check his buddy upstairs. Can't leave a friend behind. Not sure why John Carpenter deleted this scene from the original movie in 1981, but it makes a great addition and explains more of Snake's background story how he ended up captured by Bob Hauke and the New York prison guards.
It would have been bolder to use this a some sort of extended trailer months before the movie came out without any explanation. Then have the movie just continue from it, just like the release version.
JJ Abrams and his dad (a TV producer) viewed a rough cut with John Carpenter before release. JJ's dad suggested that they cut the bank robbery. JJ (a kid at the time) commented that they hadn't shown what happened to Adrianne Barbeau's character after being hit by the car. Carpenter took both of these observations to heart, cutting the bank scene and filming a new scene of Adrianne's character's corpse. Just heard this today in an NPR interview with JJ.
The problem with the scene is that it starts off with the vision of Snake as a criminal...without it he is introduced as a prisoner in a police state in a broken apocalyptic world. So it can influence the way you see his guilt via first impression. I think the movie is better off without it....it was also drawn out which embeds the 'criminality' further in the perception...even though his reasons are absent and could be honorable. But then again, if the scene had been in the original then I probably would have been annoyed at its removal. Another problem with this scene is that it introduces his character in a context of weakness, defeat, fleeing and surrender. I wonder if the government would prefer this scene to remain...I expect not, as it shows the security forces killing an unarmed man...and chasing a 'national hero' into a corner....or shows that ex-serviceman don't have much joy once they leave the forces.
Great to see this, but it was the right call to delete it from the final cut. Adds mystery to Snake's background and we don't open the movie showing him as a failure. Better to cut right to the main story. Boy, I miss John Carpenter, at least the John Carpenter from the 70s/80s.
Its cool to see more of one of my favorite movies. But I think its also better, that they cut the scene. I found the part at the end, were it takes so long for Snake to run down and then to return to his dying friend, not realley convincing.
Non capisco perché sia stata tagliata questa parte è stupenda e anche le musiche e atmosfere fantastiche !!!!! Il primo film che ho visto da bambino sono passati quasi 40 anni ma per me è il più bel film di sempre
I don't know if anyone explained why this sequence was deleted (I didn't read all the comments). In the audio commentary Carpenter explains it: They showed the film (with this opening) to a small group of people. And the audience said, they couldn't understand what was going on until the prison scenes came.
+Kai Thomas Guess they couldn't tell it was a bank robbery just because it was shot somewhat subtle... Sigh, lol. Subtlety is often the first thing lost when trying to appeal to the "masses."
I love it how John Carpenter unknowingly got the depiction of future currency almost on the nose. Think about it, we use debit cards, credit cards, gift cards. Cash money isn’t as prevalent as it once was.
2 Things: - If I'm not mistaken, this scene is referenced in Escape from LA when Snake meets up with CarJack. -The uniforms worn by the security policemen wear look like the ones later worn by the policemen in Ridley Scott's 1984 Apple Commercial (1983). It also look like they were reused in the sequel as well.
Funny how filmmakers view of the future is never close to what actually happens. When I was a child in the '60's, we were all gonna be flying around in Jetson cars by now. lol
I think its because in 1960s and 1970s. Crime was massive in USA. It wasnt that huge in 1950s. So this may have been what they back then assumed future would be like. But obviously life as of now isnt that bad. I think the idea of "Virtual money" or (bitcoin) is kinda accurate... well if it was in 2020 or something. But very ambitious movie
I think it might be interesting to go back and do an origin story for Plissken. Wyatt Russell could easily stand in for Kurt; I saw Wyatt in "Overlord" and he looks like his dad at an earlier age. Show Plissken as a young man, just starting in the military and idealistic, then show him slowly being emotionally beaten in the Snake Plissken we know.
Never saw this one before. Great stuff. I wish Carpenter gave us a longer cut of the film. We still have the original theatrical version, but it would be some kind of Redux version.
Good choice to leave this out. Thrusting him right into the situation kept the pace brisk. But the main reason i assume this was cut, was due to how this made his character more sympathetic and less mysterious.
The name 'Tanner' and getting off the train in San Francisco... 2 details that connect this movie and my favorite sitcom 'Full House'... Ah, if Carpenter was about to make a third 'Snake Plissken' movie, it could've been called 'Escape from San Francisco', does anybody agree?
Amazing scene. The presidents plane crashes into JPMorgan building in Manhattan but the police rescue heads towards the World Trade Center on the radar display. Now the mystery is complete solved
Yes, something was lost with all the CGI used. One thing I really liked about the 1982 Thing was the props used I think gave it more realistic gore and creepyness. The blood and guts was actual fluid, the monsters had to actually move and tear apart themselves and so on and so forth. See what I mean? Where did you learn to stop chainsaws? Is that something you trained for or was it instinct?
Think of what your saying though, how else would everyone in the movie know about Snake Pliskin if that scene didn't help explain it? Even the "Duke" heard about Snake Pliskin, they all did, and that scene finally explains why, he was the most wanted for a very valid reason thanks to that scene...
I’m not usually of the opinion that deleted scenes should be included in movies; they’re usually cut for a reason. However, I feel that this scene would make the film even better. Snake feels more human in this scene that at any point in the movie, and we get some (much needed, I’d argue) context and insight into why his attitude is the way it is when he meets Hauk. It makes him more three dimensional, rather than just a very cool icon. It also opens the world of the movie up and gives you a sense of things outside of New York and it makes the film feel more real and lived in. Not to mention that it features such a good reveal of the character. There should absolutely be a Director’s Cut available with this scene included. (The only negative, I’d argue is the slightly goofy robot thing, but it’s not terrible and worth it for all the positives the scene brings).
wow!!! i have seen EFNY a hundred times, one of my faves, but i have never seen this. oooooooo, i hope they release an un-edited version for us fans. kinda like stephen king with "the stand". i have the edited book and the un-abridged version. i would love to see an un-edited version of EFNY. HOT!!!! soundtrack is awesome too!!!
He was a famous anarchist and robber and that's enough, imho. Even in Rocky you see Apollo is the boss to beat even if they don't have you watch his entire carrer, ne?
I agree, this scene reveals too much about Snake prematurely, and John Carpenter was right to leave it out of the movie. It's better to watch the movie proper first, and then watch this scene afterward (or better yet, read the novelization, which delves even deeper). (By the way, if you think the police's offing of Taylor was cold-blooded, wait 'till you read the novelization and find out what else they've done-sorry, no spoilers)
I should Roadhouse your face for saying that, Patrick Swayze and Kurt Russell don't look tough to me. They look like 80's Male stripper trying to be tough.
Remove this beginning was good choice for the film obviously. Plissken is a mysterious anti-heroe, it's better for us to know a little from this character. I think the less information we have about him the better But, as a curio it's fine
Actually, I liked this deleted scene a lot and think it should have been put back in the movie for the latest DVD release. I love the character of Snake Plissken and think the movie was perfect as it was. However, I love John Carpenter and think this deleted scene showcases some of his better aspects as a director, which was kinda' lost in his later films. Still, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK is my favorite movie not matter what! Don't mess with Snake!
Oh speaking of Atlanta Continuity he apparently was in the bottom of the Omni Stadium or Atlanta Airport then brand new then appeared into Ashby Station. Ashby and Omni Stations are 3 stops away from each. As well the continuity issue of him running to catch the train. Ashby is a double decked station. Upstairs trains go to West Atlanta Downstairs trains go to Downtown Atlanta and Decatur. They kept switching the train scene from upstairs to downstairs, There were no Bankhead Trains back then. Bankhead Station didn’t exist.
This is the first time I have seen this before ever in my life. I never knew that this existed. I loved the feel of the Escape from new York films. Being a member of the third world war terror threat. Hardly anyone of this generation understands how it shaped the present things that now exist.
I agree and agree. Seems familiar so I may have seen this in a director's cut or something. And yes, this would have made a key introduction for Snake. Man, he was hot!
+Patrick McCarron I hope you're joking. Unless of course you seriously believe Jimmy Carter wanted to create a police state with him as supreme leader and his agenda was to start a war with the Soviet Union and China at any cost. You see it's implied that the douchebag president in EFNY either started the war or escalated a minor political quarrel into a devastating conflict that could have been avoided had he not been such an asshole. In the movie it's left wing extremists that high jack the president's plane because they hate him and his whole military state (fascism). Plissken himself realizes he has been but a pawn for said president in a war he doesn't give a crap about at this stage. No think about somebody like Pat Buchanan as president or anybody that thinks that wars are both unavoidable and crucial to solve issues. Lastly. The number of homeless people in New York skyrocketed during Reagan's reign. Fortunately they weren't armed and fortunately there were enough police officers to deal with them...
Christine Fury, when Jimmy Carter dies, my flag will be flying high. No half way up the pole, all the way up and flapping high in the wind for all to see.
well, it's the reason in both movies for his arrest. The reason why this is a good deletion is because it detracts from the main action scene - New York, and because the movie was almost full length even after Carpenter reedited it.
How is it that the footage they used in my VHS tape of the Special Director's Edition looks far better than the "remastered" deleted scene on the Blu-ray or UA-cam?
My compliments to Victor.. for choosing Bastille Day for this.. video.. No prison has more been known than the Bastille.. and July 14 is Its day.. an annual event.. // on that day.. the head of the warden was Piked.. and shown off.. much like how the duke wanted to snake's ,. Props for the upload.. i have subed..
Should they have left it in or cut it? I don't know - but as a fan of the movie I'll say it's a GREAT scene. I can't tell you if it would have "confused" a first-time audience. But I will say that finding this gem 30 years after-the-fact makes it an *incredible*, nostalgic find.
Wow the MARTA trains looked like this well into the early 2,000s they only took the cushioning out of the seats but the trains stayed this way until 2006. He came into Ashby Station then ended up at Omni/Now Mercedes Benz Station. Station still look the same.
It's a good scene but I think they made the right decision to edit it out. It wasn't needed for the story. Having said that, a Snake Plissken prequel movie/series would've been great.
@fadethetrade In this scene alone? Maybe. But keep in mind, you're watching this without seeing the rest of the movie. In context with the rest of the movie, you might not think so.
That's also Jamie Lee Curtis' voice you hear over the intercom as Snake Plissken is being led into the Liberty Island Security center where she says, "Attention: You are now entering the debarkation area. No talking, no smoking. Follow the orange line to the processing area. The next scheduled departure to the prison is in two hours. You now have the option to terminate and be cremated on the premises. If you elect this option, please notify the duty sargeant in your processing area."

Duuuude I was riding the Marta like a year after I watched both films, and I was thinking to myself, wait a minute, I've been here before!

Carpenter took both of these observations to heart, cutting the bank scene and filming a new scene of Adrianne's character's corpse. Just heard this today in an NPR interview with JJ.
Could someone, anyone, please put this movie up for all to enjoy, I'm sure we would all be grateful to whoever does, thanks.
They could have cut it into a flash back seen
Yesssss
This is the greatest thing I've seen all year! Thanks!
2 Things:
- If I'm not mistaken, this scene is referenced in Escape from LA when Snake meets up with CarJack.
I like the fact that in this future they can take the subway from Denver to San Francisco!
At 03:23 he jumps the turn style. That a major crime for sure.
They must make the third movie and with Russell in it. Like he is old now.
Dmitriy Vantsov they're discussing a remake. It would be cool if Kurt Russell could replay Snake in the remake
Im glad new York isnt a prison anymore and the police have lightened up a bit. 1997 was a hell of a year.
Sometimes I think I need to Escape from SF...
Great Score
Incredible. I didn't know anything about this scene! Amazing!
He doesn't need to be "three dimensional". This isn't some soap opera.
2:23 this scene explains the intro scene in the video game, Metal Gear Solid, when Snake enters the elevator and begins taking off his tactical gear.
wow!!! i have seen EFNY a hundred times, one of my faves, but i have never seen this. oooooooo, i hope they release an un-edited version for us fans. kinda like stephen king with "the stand". i have the edited book and the un-abridged version. i would love to see an un-edited version of EFNY. HOT!!!! soundtrack is awesome too!!!
R.I.P Patrick Swayze
That's Kurt russell, not swayze
no thats patrick swayze can you not tell
+MrStriper91 At least attempt to be funny...
I should Roadhouse your face for saying that, Patrick Swayze and Kurt Russell don't look tough to me. They look like 80's Male stripper trying to be tough.
Nice subway, it looks like a space ship from the first star wars episodes.
Remove this beginning was good choice for the film obviously. Plissken is a mysterious anti-heroe, it's better for us to know a little from this character. I think the less information we have about him the better
But, as a curio it's fine
They kept switching the train scene from upstairs to downstairs,
There were no Bankhead Trains back then.
Bankhead Station didn’t exist.
That's awesome that that's Jamie Lee Curtis' voice.
nope.. it's Debra Hill
Fun fact: Jamie Lee Curtis provided the voice narration at the beginning of this great film😂
The station where Snake gets caught is the Phillips Arena/GA Dome station on MARTA.
2:56 Badass soundtrack!!!!
This would have happened had Jimmy Carter been elected to a second term.
lol
Patrick McCarron This has happened. We live in a police state and if you don't realize it you have your head in the sand.
*****, I realize it.
No half way up the pole, all the way up and flapping high in the wind for all to see.
the background score that is in this scene is different to the one thats on the soundtrack, i wonder if its possible to get this score somewhere
Just found it, it's on UA-cam and it's called Escape from New Jersey 😁(A Snake Plisken fan made film) check it out
well, it's the reason in both movies for his arrest. The reason why this is a good deletion is because it detracts from the main action scene - New York, and because the movie was almost full length even after Carpenter reedited it.
Now I here their gonna make a remake of this film ...first .....point break now this ..! That sucks ..! Man..!
Good point
Love this movie
should have kept this scene in the movie!!!
It's a good scene but I think they made the right decision to edit it out. It wasn't needed for the story. Having said that, a Snake Plissken prequel movie/series would've been great.
this movie reminds me deus ex
esp this particular cut with all the concrete and blue light
March 28 2020 today has eerie similarities seems like a time travel machine truly exists
this sounds like hell on earth ounce you go in you dont come out
@fadethetrade In this scene alone? Maybe. But keep in mind, you're watching this without seeing the rest of the movie. In context with the rest of the movie, you might not think so.
I think this video is off a little bit it said that in 1988 crime rate rose by 400% And it's more like in 2022 crime rate rose by 400%
Any moment at 02:34, the screen should read (in big bold letters):
"Tactical Espionage Action
Metal Gear
Plissken".
fuck mgs
@@mauriziostella1536 fuck YOU.
This scene is even more relevant today with their bag full of "credit cards" and our move to a "cashless" society.
