Excellent break down! Wonderful to see such long-term realworld use :) I have the Brooks 17 Narrow (151mm vs 175mm) but have yet to put any serious miles on it in a single ride and only about 1000 miles over more than a year. Being very slippy it adds to the comfort, and there is no chaffing. Having to worry about the seat cover is a pain. I had the very comfy Koobi Enduro & Koobi Century w/ Elastomer inserts but these cause the rails to flex and the Titanium rails didn't last long. Have switched to the stronger Manganese rails but haven't used either since fitting the Brooks. Their waterproof Cambium saddles seems to be a love/hate 'Marmite' saddle. Soon to fit a new Cane Creek eSilk+ with 20mm travel. Basically the gravel version of the Thudbuster. Fortunately/unfortunately I got a free upgrade from alloy to carbon as they had run out of stock. Also excited to fit the Vecnum FreeQUENCE elastomer stem for 20mm positive travel and 10mm negative travel. :)
Hey Niel! Thanks for watching. Yeah saddles are a very personal choice, what works for me might be hell for you and viceversa. It's laughable when you see videos popping up saying this is the most comfortable saddle or that one. we all have a different ass. You seem well equipped, enjoy your rides!
The front rack is a little “crook”, I love this word. I only heard it in Australia where is means “unwell”, so it kind of fits nicely if your rack got “doored”.

@@DavideTravelli - Just to add to that. I rode on a Brooks B17 for a long time and I found it EXTREMELY comfortable, but it took forever to break in and then it just wouldn't stop breaking in. It would sag and I would tighten it over and over, until eventually the bolt snapped in the middle of nowhere. I found a replacement bolt, but I had to tighten it so much that the rivets started ripping through the leather.
It's a shame because I loved the comfort, but it was just not reliable....

@VeloObscura if you cover it when it rains and at night and treat it with the right oils it does last quite a while but yeah it has some limitations
@@DavideTravelli - Yeah, I did all of that - I still have half a tin of Proofide left - and it did last me a while, but not long enough!
I think modern technology can come up with something better than leather at this point! 😅
All saddles have an expiry date depending on the usage, when I was younger and racing a saddle would last me barely a season.

Credo che il motivo per cui le Brooks siano così tanto consigliate ed utilizzate per i viaggi sia che va sufficientemente bene per tutti i culi senza il bisogno di provarne 20, ed è sufficientemente durevole per la maggior parte degli utilizzatori. Probabilmente ciascuno troverebbe maggior beneficio nel fare una visita dal biomeccanico e farsi consigliare la sella giusta per il proprio culo. Per il tuo utilizzo hardcore è giusto investire sulla sella giusta, per me cicloturista della domenica la mia Brooks rimane un oggetto estremamente comodo ed estremamente bello.
Sicuramente e' una sella media ma come dici tu sarebbe meglio fare delle misurazioni dal biomeccanico per scegliere una sella di dimensioni appropriate alla proprie caratteristiche fisiche.
Cosa usi come bike computer di questi tempi?

Not necessarily, you can be comfortable with both system with a proper bike fitting. Flat bars offer more real estate for packing though.

about the Brooks saddles: I did the reverse path, I tried a few brands (SMP, Selle Italia, Selle Bassano, etc.) but my behind kept having problems with them; out of desperation I tried Brooks which to me was just an anachronistic, ugly saddle. to my surprise it worked or, better, I had less problems compared to the others.
one question: I was wondering about the two panniers at the front; wouldn't the handling be better if they were at the back? or are there advantages that offset the lack of handling?
last question: bear spray, can you tell me the brand and how to get it. In April I will set off to North Cape and I would feel safer having that item with me.

Bear encounters are incredibly rare in Scandinavia, we have both few and scared bears in Sweden. Just as afraid of people as we are of them. But feeling safe is of course most important, unfortunately I don't have any suggestion on where you can find bear spray, never heard anyone use it here.
Thank you Ferruccio, to your questions:
1. Front loading have a few advantages: better handling especially on lose dirt, downhill, sand, gravel etc. Better weigh distribution (body weight is mostly on the back wheel alredy). More efficient climbing. At the end of the day is nothing dramatic, just pack your bike as you please.
2. Bear Spray is not needed in Europe. I carry for personal defence, you will not need it for bears. It's illegal everywhere in Europe but Slovakia and either Croatia or Slovenia - you should contact some shops of said countries and see if they are willing post one to you.
@@DavideTravelli thank you Davide for the explanation. I use four panniers plus a dry bag but I ride mainly on tarmac and the occasional dirt road.
@@esavirtanen6418 yes, I'm aware of that, but I wouldn't mind carrying a canister anyway. perhaps bear encounters are rare because no one lived to tell (just kidding).
Hello my friend. Do you have experience in alcoholic beverage shops? I am constantly having problems with the gas stove working, I think my pump is broken. The alcohol stove seems to be both quieter, cleaner and worry-free.
You need a high percentage alcohol which is very difficult to find in a lot countries. In many countries is not available at all (all Muslim countries for sure). Once I wanted to boil a few eggs in Guatemala took me like a couple of hours. In Panama had a Dragonfly delivered and haven’t looked back.
@@DavideTravelli Thanks so much for the information. I have one last question, is your bike suitable for 29x3.0 tires? The rear fork that I will buy Genesis looks suitable, but I cannot understand whether there is the necessary clearance in the front fork. There is no full explanation on the seller's website.
@bikepackingg mine is a Genesis Longitude. It’s a 27.5+

Ha, ha, you must be very strong! @@DavideTravelli I'm planning a trip next april through Spain and Portugal where the hills and mountains are very steep. That's why I'm so curious about the weight. At 64 years of age and working all year, living in the absolute flat Netherlands it's not possible to train for the mountains. Thanks again for all the beautiful video's and usefull information.
I wouldnt worry too much, get a very low gear for your bike and you'll be able to climb walls. Safe rides!
