Just saw it earlier today. I was completely blown away by how immersive the film was. Bill Skaarsgard blew me away and I was genuinely afraid of him. Lily had a lot to do in this film and she delivered. The entire cast was great, the tone was so dark and gloomy.
The fact that Dafoe is playing the Van Helsing character when he played Orloc, himself in "Shadow of the Vampire", which was about the making of "Nosferatu", is fantastic. lol
Saw the film today. It was incredible. Especially Lily’s performance she blew me away. The cinematography in this is gorgeous. Now I’ve gone down a rabbit hole of cast interviews.
I just saw this last night in IMAX and... I'm not one who gets scared much by films so I don't go into a scary movie with that expectation, but I go in to see how unique and uncomfortable and immersive a scary film can be. My lord, it's been years since I've been completely swept away by a horror film. I felt cold the entire film; the score is absolutely haunting and incredible. The performances are literally unbelievable. I didn't know it was Bill Sarsgaard until after the film (Thought it was a 70yr old European Theater actor) and Lily...Lily is terrifying in this. What a crazy performance. William Defoe is everything you want him to be. Anyway, if you can, see this in the theater if you like immersive horror. A classic re telling of a very iconic story done with real detail and cinema magic. I still have that smile on my face that I did walking out of the theater.
I remember trolling for DVD's at Best buy years ago and happened upon Nosferatu for 5 bucks. Watched it and was memorized by it. The orchestral score, the creepy dreamlike quality, and orlok himself just made the movie otherworldly. I definitely want to see this.
It was a beautifully shot movie. Great/stunning cinematography and awesome acting from Lily. But, it was not terrifying or scary…was mostly dreamlike for the most part. The dreamy/nightmarish feeling/atmosphere lingered too long and got a bit redundant. I feel like Bram Stoker’s Dracula did better in a lot of ways. Will have to rewatch that again to compare.
I did enjoy how he flipped the narrative in contrast with the novel by having Mina/Helen take agency and be the one who restores peace in the end instead of the men, as in Dracula. ❤🔥 Amazing film!
Just watched it at the opening. It was an amazing experience full of vivid imagery combined with ulterior gothic writing that adequately captures the zeitgeist of 19th century Germany. Wonderfully done.
Nosferatu sounds like a good movie. The cast is great. The director reminds me of me. Very nice man. He feels for Nosferatu. The way I feel for the alien franchise. I can't wait to see this movie. The old school vampire is back. We love to be scared of them. Not like most of todays vampire stories. Can't wait to see Bill Skarsgard as Count Or lock. Shadow of the Vampire is a good movie too. 🧛🦇🎥
Yeah I'm not going to lie for a movie review the movie starts off really slow but it does get better and it gives you a glimpse of like historical accuracy and just the cinematographer is amazing😮 but I do recommend watching it at least once
I think it’s pretty clear that the cinematography looks great. But anyone who has seen it (I still haven’t yet), thoughts on the movie as a whole? Truthfully in general I haven’t been too impressed with the quality of movies these days, all the unnecessary sequels remakes and unrequested reboots (looking at you gladiator II 👀). So it’s been like hard to push myself to see this in theaters ya know? As much as I do actually love vampire movies and gothic aesthetic. In any case, I love that shot of the hand shadow over the town and the silhouette of Orlok behind the curtain flowing in the wind. Those are great.
Honest answer. A solid 8/10. Beautifully shot movie and stunning cinematography….but the overall pacing and constant dreams state of mind was distracting and got mundane. Wanted more meat and rawness, but just felt surreal the entire time. Maybe that was intentional, but it caused less connection to the characters/events that unfolded. Even the horrific things that happened didn’t seem/feel all that real cause everyone seemed to be in a dream state of mind.
@@peisithanatos_ Ahh, the obtuse wHaT iS wOkE question. I don't usually get motion sickness but the last 30 mins of the film I sat in the theater with my eyes closed. The way it was filmed or because I was sorta close to the screen it made me feel super sick. I honestly couldn't even tell you how it ended & it wasn't good enough for me to care. I'm usually a fan of Eggers work but Id have to watch it again when its out streaming
i felt the same in some ways, I was nauseous like the entire movie. Looking back though, its shots and performances are etched into my mind. Captivating. I look forward to checking it out again from home :)
Yeah it felt like the entire movie was in a dream state of mind…and got a little mundane at one point. Maybe that was intentional but it was a little distracting and took away the wow factor for me. Due to the dark colors, it was also hard to make things out many times. Gave it 8/10
F W Murnau was German and served in WW1 also mit MAX Schreck the rats came from their experiances in the trenches rats as big as cats!, menschen fressers!
The makers of the original 1922 film were trying to avoid copyright issues with the Bram Stoker estate, same reasons the names of the characters were changed in the story. This gave Nosteratu an (undead) life of its own. Despite the name and the location change's aside, it's "Dracula," and the original 1922 film, probably, is one of the most faithful adaptions of the book. Certainly, Max Shreck's portrayal of Count Orlok is definitely the most striking and creepiest image of an undead to ever grace ceilliod.
My only gripe with Robert Eggers films is that they're not in the original language that match the setting in the case of both The Northman and Nosferatu. I know this is not up to him but due to Anglophone audiences refusing to read subtitles. His love of history and the spoken world is evident, but still the sentiment stands...
Lol I thought the same thing. I saw the film though, and she plays the part very well. Just don't ask her anything about it and expect a coherent answer.
Am I the only one exhausted by the constant insertion of gender and race politics into every narrative? The human experience is much more nuanced and universal than race and gender. Constructs like that only serve to divide the common wealth so they can be more easily controlled and manipulated by the powers at be. What if character, intellect, personality, and achievement were universal qualities, celebrated on their own merit, without being overshadowed by political rhetoric? What if a good character was simply a good character? Not every story set in a different time or place needs to be tethered to present-day narratives of inequality to be resonant or well-executed. Sometimes, the power of storytelling lies in exploring universal truths-honor, love, betrayal, courage-without forcing a contemporary agenda onto the narrative. A great story can stand on its own, not because it avoids complexity, but because it trusts the audience to find meaning without heavy-handedness. Not every actor interview needs to be politically heavy handed…..
She just talked about some historical facts about the treatment of women of that time. Why are you people so eager to be offended by every little thing? Stop being a snowflake and let people express their opinions.

I am going to give Robert Eggers one more chance with me, but that is it. 'The Witch' was marketed as the scariest movie ever, and it was terrible. Then 'The Lighthouse' was marketed as one of the scariest and most disturbing movies ever, and it was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Now we have Nosferatu, and it's being marketed the same. If this one ends up being another piece of shit, that is it for me with Robert Eggers.
Wot ze flick is up with the actors in the interviews? Willem hardly smiled, so bored. Nic was ready to bail out as Depp's brat went on & on with loony nonsense, & he thought she'd go off on a mental rant about her character being woke & the main focus of the story, & how she was trapped in the grip of a misogynistic vampire society, then forced to fight against hundreds of Satanic patriarchy with her bare hands, but she was triumphant. Willem was bored to death & wished he'd accepted the role as The Joker instead :-)
I didn’t get that vibe at all from any of them, but if there is any despondency it’s most likely to do with answering the same questions endlessly without appearing bored.
