I think it was very good for Tony to come straight out and admit mental health issues.
Depression is based on the past, ie better days, anxiety is based on the unknown, that is the future.
As a young boy in the late 50 the idea 9f an electric train or watching Gresley locos going through Hornsey was so exciting I could almost pee my self.
My dream was to have one of these rich man's 0 gauge layouts.
Well now I'm almost 70, the old days disappeared to a nutty world of today.
Now I build those 0 gauge locos and if you click on my channel you will see them.
The fact is there have been times of extreme darkness when for almost a year I did NOTHING.
How easy is to watch UA-cam stuff and see a horrible world or just get overloaded, plus social media.
I think even with others in our hobby never assume they look ok they must be doing better than me.
There have been times when I feel like I have nobody to talk to, not family of friends.

Thank you for your courage and your honesty in talking about your history of depression and the helpful role that railway modelling has played in dealing with that illness. I also have suffered from depression and an anxiety disorder and find the world of railways and model railways a comforting one.

I was suffering a severe depression and i decided i needed to have something to do rather than brooding. I built an exhibition layout in a few weeks and took it to an exhibition where it was well received. That really taught me something about managing depression which I have never forgotten. For me doing something is much better than doing nothing even if motivation is a big problem which it was for me.

This just proves that Hornby should consider producing diecast models of further prototypes. This new trio all flew off the shelves, they look great and the haulage capacity is incredible. Top stuff.

As a carer for someone with mental health issues I too have found modelling a welcome and therapeutic activity that exercises parts of my brain that otherwise would stultify if I merely watched tv or dvd's. I spent a lot of time by the ECML at Hadley Wood from the late 50's until the end of steam so your lovely layout brings on feelings of nostalgia. Thank you for the video

Hellio Tony. Thank you for this. A lesson for all.
When my wife pased away some five years ago I could simply not have got through everything without my exhibition layout which has been almost rebuilt!! Sadly never to go out to shows again due to serious ill-health, I take great comfort in the little modelling I can still do and the wonderful UA-cam railway community.
    Thanks Tony
    Cheers

I worked clinically in, and taught, mental health subjects for 30 years, and have had my own personal experiences of depression. Certainly, having something to occupy the mind and distract from invasive and troubling thoughts, is invaluable. My own distraction for many years was photography (and now I teach it). Now, living alone in a remote country area, I have just started my first serious layout.

Thank you mr. Wright, dear Tony, for speaking out on how a hobby like model railroading can help overcome mental health problems. Not to forget the similar can be said when we encounter physical setbacks. Hobbies in general help us create another perspective next to our daily ones; plus the skills necessary provide a great learning curve considering the upkeep of motor skills and abilities in general.
My thanks not just for the trains, but so much for how you break the veil of your depression and how model railroading helped you overcome it.
Awe is the appropriate word here!

Bless you Tony. Railway modelling has been a constant help to me and my family when it comes to mental well-being. The hobby has given us so much and I'd like to think that we've given back to the hobby too. Any such hobby is a great boon to mental health, especially in these challenging and turbulent times. A close friend of mine has had SARS 2 and Acute Long Covid Syndrome (at the time of writing for 17 months or so). He can't do much at all, but tries to model make for his railway for just a few minutes each day - it keeps him going. We encourage him as much as we can, he tells me that even just Imagineering and building his layout in his mind, ordering a few parts, inspires him to get better, to look for answers etc, keeps his spirits up etc. Railway modelling is more than just a sum of its parts! 😊😊👍

Very much enjoyed this. I've just started a sizeable layout with a good friend who is currently in remission from prostate cancer and it's really brought him out of an understandable low. Currently producing numerous templates as we're making our own turnouts, slips, diamonds, etc. (Thank you, Mr Wynne and Templot) The more complex the type, the happier he is!
Just have to say I was feeling quite mellow after listening to Mr Wright's measured tones as he gave his conclusion only to be rudely awakened by the rock music outro: I love me rock, but please, some warning...😋

Tony: wise words about depression and our art-form.
Perhaps the biggest 'worry' I have about the modern crop of locos (not engines) is that they last only as long as the first set of brushes. I have been replacing motor brushes all my life, and to be presented with a sealed motor is like running into a gum tree. Am I in error?
Does anyone know if RM authors from the dim dark past, ACN Herd, and WA Henderson are still around. It's a l-o-n-g time ago. I never had the chance to thank them for their writings.
Keep going Tony, you also are a great encouragment.

With all respect Mr. T Wright sounds like a 'vicar' - maybe he is the 'vicar of Railway Modellers'. His presentation of Hornby is spot on and his modifications seem justified especially regarding the 'tension lock' couplers. But why you change the bogie wheels ? I'm not into rivet counting but like realism as far as 'good is good enough'. Don't like these 'concertina gangways' (?) Hornby has a better 'Roco - like' short coupler that works great to couple carriages in a prototypical way. Even modelling free lance - as a EU model railroader - I love Hornby's Steam loco's and my collection is growing running them on "The AnneliesVille & Navigation Company". ( ua-cam.com/video/PTW4LSsWgOY/v-deo.html )
Just wish the 'Quality Control' would be updated for I experienced 'Ready To Repair' to often as opposed to RTR proper definition.
Thanks for sharing. Most enjoyable and hopefully contributing to help & encourage 'depressive' souls. It is indeed a great hobby !!

the bogie wheels typically look horribly plain on RTR models, the exception being the recent thompson pacifics, replacing them with markits or gibson alternatives gives a much much better look.

    • @richardhiggins6471

I think by 'layout coach' Tony Wright means 'One that looks right from normal viewing distances and is robust enough to withstand a bit of handling' i.e. not a perfect museum piece that has to be displayed behind glass. Tumblohome is the curvature in the sides of a coach. The Pullmans on display are flat sided (no tumblehome) whereas Gresley teaks curve inwards towards the chassis, as do most coaches. The Hornby ones tend to be too straight, not curvbing in enough in many people's opinion.
