  • How does a newbie beekeeper catch a swarm of bees? I've only had my bees for two months but one of my colonies swarmed so I had to do the best I could to catch the swarm and re-home them. Did I succeed?

We had bees on the farm when children
    One day a swarm formed
It was fascinating to watch the bee keeper lay a white sheet from swarm to box, reach into the swarm and remove the Queen, put her into the box and the bees marched down the sheet in an orderly manner to join her 👍 well done 👏👏🌻

Reminds me of when Mum and I watched with dismay Dad’s bees swarm over a high hedge at the end of our garden into some else’s garden. All we had was two mesh shopping bags to put over our heads and then we had to walk 1/2 a mile round to try and identify the garden they had gone to. Very unconvinced house owner when we turned up knocking on their door as you can imagine in suburbs of Southampton. Anyway they let us look and there they were and when Dad came home he got the swarm back. Luckily he didn’t have to drive to Inverness for a spare chamber like poor Shaun as he had loads at home. My weekend summer job was to hold the chambers tilted up while Dad cut out the queen cells. You brought back a lot of memories. Dad kept bees until he was 80. Thank you.

Not sure if maybe some of the bees might have to go on holiday. Otherwise the ones that came from the same hive may steal from each other. Also in a swarm chasers kit should be some branch loppers and a saw. Then you can chop the branch off with the bees on and catch it in a box.
I'm only a bee helper, not an expert but I've done a little swarm chasing!

Fantastic, Colin. It's such a buzz (forgive the pun!) when something like that happens ... and even more so when you are successful dealing with it! I caught my first swarm nearly a year ago (during our last spring) It wasn't from my hive, it just flew in to the back yard. A large cardboard box sufficed as a temporary home for a few days until I could get a new hive.
A beekeeper recently told me that this is the start of a slippery slope - now you know how to catch swarms, you'll be doubling your number of hives every year from swarms... 🙂

That was really informative. Two classics in this one. The unconscious finger pointing. I didn't spot it. It was mentioned, so went back. So funny. The other was. Colin falls. Shaun: " What happened? " Collin: " I fell." ( I'm guessing messing around with bees and your new direction is more agreeable than muddy towpaths and doing locks, trudging to the shops, etc.)

When I married we kept bees for a while. Said to ourselves we would only have a couple of hives. Well 12 hives later we ended up getting divorced, not the bees fault and we ended up giving them to a friend. Spent lots of money had lots of kit and got wonderful honey which we used to sell. We never made a profit so you could say we got stung!!!

A joke from a former beekeeper to a current one: Once there was a hive of bees who swarmed and while they were on the road going to their new colony site they stopped and used the facilities at a "BP" station. However, there was one bee who refused and went next door and used the facilities at the ESSO station, thus proving that there is at least one ESSO bee in every crowd!

Aye, came here to say that. Glad to see it's the top comment. Good for Colin, that's a really stressful thing to happen so soon. And then be like knocking on the the homeowner's door to say "my bees on on your property, can I maybe fall off a ladder on your property to retrieve them? (I'm in the US, injuries are more litigious here. I had berry trees on my property and if you wanted to pick them it was a handpicked bucket or a tarp on the ground shaking the tree: no ladders)
I really hope this isn't cherry-picked "instagram lifestyle" moments because I truly hope that Colin has been able to relax into land-life without becoming a bundle of nerves. Bees and Chickens are such wonderful backyard friends. Also calming and distracting.

Well done on getting your bees back...happy you didn't break anything when you fell. Have a good weekend Colin and Shaun and Otis and last but least Maud and her chicken buddies. 🐝🐝🐝

I’m so sorry but I couldn’t help myself laughing when you fell off the ladder. I wasn’t being nasty, honest. Glad you’re ok. 👍Much love. Oh and chickens have started laying again now the weather has cooled down. 🙌

Crazy, I hope you were able to retain the colony. It would be great to have three producing honey for you. Good improvising to recover the bees.
