+Jimmy C - Doesn't seem to work like that. If you've never been taught to be a parent, via a role model - then how do you know how to do it? John Lennon really had no frame of reference. His mother was in and out of his life - his Dad, absent. Having said that - some people with such childhoods manage to do it instinctively. Many don't though...

+aerialkate I think you've hit the nail on the head--and Julian here (at age thirty-six) is clearly afraid he'd be the same way. As it happened, now at age fifty-three he has still never married and has no children. While it's still biologically possible he might do this, statistically at this point the chances are vanishingly small. (Men do sometimes marry and father children later in life, but, statistically speaking, most of these men have been married before and have fathered children before.)

Well....none that we know of! I think he was a bit of a party lad in his day. I've heard him say that about himself in a couple of interviews anyway; but he's kind of coy about it, didn't call himself a hellraiser or anything. Perhaps you're right though and he was subconsciously scared of screwing it up.
Wasn't this a great interview though? So candid and kind of moving. Fascinating stuff.

It must suck to have everyone telling you how much they love your father when your father never loved you, so I can understand how he feels. That's too bad because he seems like a nice guy. It is ironic because John sang so much about love and yet he wasn't there to love his own son. Yoko also had a child that she didn't know growing up.

Yoko's ex husband kept her daughter, Kyoko, away from her. I feel she was being selfish. If she couldn't ever see her daughter, then John wouldn't have contact with Julian. What piece of shit human being would do such a thing? I will never respect her for what she did. As much as I love John and his music, I just want to scream at him for not growing a pair and be there for his son and telling Yoko to fuck off about it.
I'm certain somewhere in the great beyond, John is sorry for being, in his words, a "thoughtless bastard". Their father/son story is truly tragic and heartbreaking and I have nothing but empathy for Julian.

I love John. This doesn’t change anything for me. I’ve seen tons of photos and videos of John with Julian all through Julian’s childhood. Seen Julian spending his 16th birthday with John, John buying Julian a nice dirt bike for his birthday. Seen photos of Julian with a baby Sean Lennon at the Dakota Apartments with Yoko and John there. So even though I can’t figure out what Julian’s talking about only seeing his father a handful of times in his childhood, I will always love John Lennon and his music.

And the times that I’ve mentioned may coincidentally pertain to after Sean was born, but that’s not the full list. There’s a video of John, Yoko and Julian (a happy Julian I might add) at John’s house going for a boat ride when John lived in England.
What Julian is not being honest about is that he had a severe drug/alcohol addiction, and that’s why he wasn’t awarded a large sum of money from John’s estate. Sounds to me like someone was looking out for his best interest, knowing if Julian got his hands on a lot of money to burn, he probably would have overdosed or drank himself to death. Just my two cents.

He abandoned Julian, which is nothing short of criminal. He treated his son like something that the cat dragged in, hence he was a piss-poor father, at best. He was an all-time great musician, and an extremely selfish and inconsiderate person. Cynthia was an adult, and she could fend for herself. Julian was a kid that needed his father (emotionally and financially) and he essentially got nothing from him, right up until the day that Lennon died when he left Julian with hardly a pittance of his overall estate. Finally, "Jealous Guy" was not written about Cynthia. The origins of the song were written while he was in India with Cynthia in early 1968 as "Child of Nature", but it was not written for Cynthia. In fact, when he rewrote the song and released it several years later in 1971, it was rewritten for Yoko, not Cynthia.

My boyfriend and I went to see Paul McCartney in concert about 10 years ago. A lifelong dream for me since "Band On The Run" came out when I was in 8th grade. McCartney told many stories about his songs, what influenced each one, who the song was really about, etc. When it came to "Hey Jude", Paul told us a story that had just about 30,000 people in tears. "Jude" was Paul's nickname for Julian. Then Paul began singing the song. Wow! The entire arena joined in, in unison. It was very moving as we all joined together for the love of Julian. McCartney is a deeply heartfelt man, a neat dude, a bitchen' dude, and a really funny dude. I already dug Julian. And for his unrelenting strength in having to be who he is, while the world adored his father. I was a child of divorce and it was painful, still is. But it wasn't under a microscope forever. Yikes, the shame, humiliation, sadness. It's amazing that Julian endured all of that. I'm stoked beyond comprehension!

Resources are rare, clout is rarest of all. But everyone shits on him while they're fucking up their own lives. It's fucked up. I'm not defending the fucked up things he did so much as admonishingthose who basically only hate on him because he was famous. SHIT tons of people are like JOhn Lennon. He just wasn't THAT special. They don't get shit on though. They certainly don't have entire GENERATIONS of people, who have absolutely nothing to do with what went on in the 60s 70s and 80s passing endless judgement on them. So much respect for Julian. I think he's done remarkably well considering he not only had a distant and disinterested father, who pointedly showed he preferred his younger half brother, but Julian has also had to grow up in his father's shadow. Being in the music business himself, this can't have been easy. Add to that, as he says here, people continually telling him how much they loved John....., poor guy.

  • @DDavy2014

That must be such a hard thing to deal with, people coming up to you and saying ‘we loved your father, he was a great man’ when they just knew him as the icon, whereas Julian knew the real man, who treated him appallingly. Never trust the mystique of celebrity. It often makes us think they’re all good because they’re successful.

In this piece he reveals what he went through and moreover has no problem discussing it without even the slightest hint of anger. Of course someone never forgets any past pain or trauma but along with the other successes he's had in his life it would be more reasonable to think that he's "gotten over" all that in his past.

I'm not sure why i am so drawn to this video. Watched it about five times. Maybe because it's so refreshing and moving to see such unfiltered honesty. Julian must have had to put up with some awful things in his life. Can you imagine that your dad is this extremely well loved & famous public figure yet not only is he on the other side of the Atlantic, but you barely know him 'and' you're having to put up with bullying & going everywhere knowing that people are looking at you saying to themselves 'oh my god, that's John Lennon's son'! The fact that he grew up to be a no-bullshit gentle person is a tribute to his mum and himself. I suspect that he had/has a certain amount of depression which likely kept him grounded too. Another reason i'm drawn to this video i think is i had a similar thing with my mum, emotional bullying and how it affects you into adult life. It hangs around like a bad smell. I met Julian a number of years ago when he did an in-store appearance thing for Photograph Smile and he was just a real person. No entourage, no faking anything, just no bullshit. I can't say that i am that familiar with his music but i'll always be a fan of the man.

Julian's always come across as a good guy; the sadness is that John just appeared to be moving into a happier and more mature and accepting phase of his life when he was shot. I'm sure some of the major problems his behaviour had caused Julian would have been resolved - John wasn't stupid or without a conscience and he would have known exactly how much pain and damage he'd caused, purely because his upbringing had done the same to him. I hope Julian has a wonderful life, and even though I'm a huge Lennon fan I have no trouble whatsoever in accepting Julian's viewpoint..... John knew he was flawed; just listen to some of the lyrics. The interview was very indicative of Julian's giving and classy nature.

After seeing this, I’ve lost respect for Julian. John set up a trust account for Julian, at the sum of about £100,000 a week if I’m not mistaken. Numerous photos all over the internet of John with Julian all through his childhood, even photos of Julian with a baby Sean Lennon at the Dakota Apartments with John and Yoko also photographed with him. A young Julian in photos out and about in New York with Yoko’s relatives. Photos of a young Julian being given a sweet 16 birthday party in New York, as well as the nice motorbike John bought him as a gift. Handwritten letters from John in the height of his fame with the Beatles sincerely apologizing for not being home (because he was working hard to make his money for his little family), and asking Cynthia to please tell Julian his father loves him. And the list goes on.
The whole my father was never a part of my life is a fib. Photos and videos don’t lie.

Paul said that he loved Julian and tried to make it up to him. There is countless postcards that Julian talks about in other interviews. Then it shows them. There is also some songs that the Beatles sung that John wrote for Julian. Guys you have to think about John;s past. His father beat his mother until he was 4 when they split. He then lived with his aunt for years. His mom barely got to see him. Then when he was 18 he saw his mom get hit by a car. He was trying to become the man that he showed off in the news before he died. I am sure by then he knew he had fucked up with Julian and so he tried to make it better with Yoko and Sean. Actually that is exactly what he tried according to many. This was a ludicrous way I admit to somewhat give up on Julian to try to make it better with Sean. Paul Mccartney said that John was a hard man but hid it on camera with his "unnerving wit." He stood for peace and tried to give it to the world but John was always fighting a battle on the inside. In the videos he is always looking off into the distance and thinking and he was still playing the music. He was a man with a lot built up inside. Respect what he stood for. PEACE

John awknowledged all the wrong he did to his son Julian and wife Cynthia. He said it is the violent people who learn that love and peace is the way and he changed to become a better man and began to renew his relationship w Julian. John was just a man. People put others on pedistals but John was a down to earth guy who was broken through his own life. He repeated the cycle of disfunction that he grew up in but once he realized this, he had courage and strength to admit it and he did make changes. His mean spirit came from his own lack of self esteem when he was young and he carried inside for many years before coming to terms w it and being able to help himself. Being aware of your problem is the first step. I am sure had Zkohn lived, he and Julian would have developed a much deeper happier relationship as that was starting to be the path they were taking at the end. Julian as he matured came to peace with it all. Julian is the best most decent human being. He could have destroyed his father s image but clearly he loved him to the end as did Cynthia.

You can't blame him. My heart was aching for Julian all through John's biography.

julian such a nice human being, I believe, John would be fascinated with his boy, he would probably return back to Europe and lived close to his family and friends, and his band, Julian is the best part of his mind, body and soul. We all love Julian, reminds us the best years of The Beatles, that little boy had been an inspiration to Paul and the Beatles, playing quietly among them, taking part to some of their vacatios and travels, any kind like that is giving hope and positive inspiration.Love u Julian Lennon, thank you so much.

Wow, talk about grace and maturity, and honesty, coming from Julian Lennon.
On top of his self-described experience, *imagine* having Yoko for a step-mom😳

I had the exact same experience with my mother growing up hating when I was enjoying myself and smiling . I got dirty looks from her and it does effect you for life. Julian couldn't figure it out why his father was like that. Well, I know why. She resented me, and hated when I was happy. I feel so sad for him. But he turned out to be a wonderful human being, and it's to bad his father didn't live to see that, and the difference between him and Sean. Sean grew up being spoiled rotten and just look at the difference in the two.

Leaon, To this very day I have trouble laughing and smiling. All through my childhood and as a teenager and adult she would rip from my face any laughter or happiness I was experiencing. Even after I was out on my own for years she didn't like to see me happy and have nice things in my life. I would have to hear how terrible her life was. For a very long time, I could not stand being around my mother, I had such hate in my heart for her and could not stand to look at her face.I would feel such anger boiling up inside me and resented having her in my house. I would see that same look in her eyes and feel such rage welling up inside me. It wasn't until years later I told her all about how cruel she was to me and how she would always cast me dirty looks all my life and how much that affected me so negatively. It wasn't until she apologized sincerely to me, is when I could start healing and forgave her, but it took a long, long time with the help of therapy, I could now say today, I love her and enjoy talking to her and have forgiven her but it was a very long process. I hope it's better with your mother today. All my best to you
