Today we start continue our journey of looking back at the original series of Yu-Gi-Oh, from the weird origins in the Manga and Season 0 to the main anime and movies featuring the original cast of characters.

For me, it was with Yami Marik emerging! I loved how he was an overwhelming threat with no remorse! Unlike Pegasus, who had tragedy driving his ambition, Marik had none! 😆 lol! Also, his resurrection and usage of RA was legendary!!!❤

This is the point in the show where Duel Monsters was becoming part of the world. It wasn't just on an island or restricted to its dueling arenas, it was an entire city where hundreds, maybe thousands of people were participating, with mobile devices to take dueling wherever and whenever. This was the point where the world revolved around duel monsters. Where life revolved around it.

That isnt really until 5ds. There were around a 100 people max in the Battle City tournament the anime added a lot of fodder characters in the background to make the event feel bigger. The whole of Battle City took place in two days and there were a couple of moments of other characters showing that a large part of the city had no idea what was even going on. Even in Gx the duel academy students are basically the equivalent of irl student professionals in Go. It isnt until 5ds that duel monsters has become integral to everyone's life

On the Joey and Yugi duel ending point, funny enough, in old Yugioh a duel could not end in the middle of a resolving effect and Joey even says that Meteor of Destruction has another effect in that he can force an opponent's monster to declare an attack against him. This suggests Meteor of Destruction, in the anime, was intended to cause draws.

This arc is the solely reason why i really enjoyed Duel Monster rather than other yugioh series cause Takahashi sensei is the GOAT of creating stories about card games. He didn't shy away to use dark , mature elements in his shounen manga weekly running and brought out many emotional , intense situations which were ahead of its time. Coolest god cards design with divine attributes , solid card games rules, awesome duel disk and augmented vision technology, villains and protag teaming up but have their own ideologies, interesting match up , battle , clashing but he knew when to slow down the run to expand the lore and stories further, and also planting foreshadow hint for final arc. As someone who once patiently wait for weekly release and also bought multiples volumes of this manga till the end of series, in term of card games story, i still can't find other series who can beat this story and excite me to read like duel monster did

What I find most amusing is that Yugi, throughout the Battle City Qualifiers, *did not play a single normal duel,* he only played people who wanted his puzzle and such. Even Kaiba and Joey got to duel some rando's. I don't know if it makes him a character with little to no agency, I just felt like pointing it out. No wonder Yugi later breaks down over having constantly fate of the world in his hands. (which in my opinion is a scene that is much better than anything in NGE)

Fun fact about Arkana: in the original Japanese anime he’s voiced by the same guy who voiced Sartorius in GX and Dio in JJBA.
Coincidentally all of these characters share the theme of Tarot cards. Arkana’s name comes from the Tarot card groups (Major Arcana/Minor Arcana). Sartorius’ deck consisted of monsters named after the Major Arcana (Arcana Force) and his boss monster was Arcana Force XXI: The World. Dio’s Stand gets its name from the 21st Major Arcana Tarot card, The World [insert obligatory Za Warudo here].

Whether it be Marik and the Rare hunters, the Egyptian god cards being introduced, or even how steadily dark but brilliant the animation was getting; I was truly in love with this arc! Lets also not forget how legendary Yami and Kaiba's epic duel was for the Battle city tournament finals! It was a perfect game of suspense!! Battle City in the manga is really good, but in general the manga version of Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist is much better than the anime. The anike included a lot of little things that could either bring up certain moments or take away great importance of what the original source material was trying to tell.
I think if you enjoy Yu-Gi-Oh anime you should do yourself a service and read the manga. It's just a lot of fun with really raw art.

This is one of my favourite arcs in DM. While there some elements that are dated or I wish that were done differently, even in the manga, it's still a fun ride and feels like the point the series came into its own a bit. Malik is still one of my favourite villains in the franchise. His hatred of the pharaoh makes sense in the manga, so he's sympathetic without letting him off the hook. Jou's character arc was fun to watch unfold. There were a lot of dark and intense duels, especially in the manga. This series, especially the characters in this arc, still inspired my own writing to this day. I have it to thank for that.

What I do want to point out is that there is no debate on season 3/ digital world arc being filler or not. it's an anime exclusive arc whose purpose it was to extend the anime so the manga could keep ahead, like filler does. Something being filler doesn't mean it's bad or doesn't have much worth (although usually filler content is disregarded as soon as the main story picks back up). Yu-gi-oh has some of the best filler material out there with both the digital world and waking the dragons being honestly on par, and at point maybe even surpassing the original work. Still, they are undoubtedly filler

Thanks so much for this walk through one of my top fac series. The duel Joey and Yugi have isi still my favorite of thsi season and I nearly got choked up again over it. I rewatched this series a few years ago, but now I want to again lol. This first iteration of it is so well written. Looking forward to more videos on it.

I've always been partial to Obelisk myself, it helps that a friend of mine gave me an obelisk waaaay back when. He had two and one of them was in rather shitty condition so he figured it was useless and said i could have it, I still have it somewhere but I have a newer copy I put in my deck.

It's hilarious how Destiny board was censored. But 4 kids did a lot of funny edits. - Shout out to Slifer the executive producer.

I can't wait to see part three. I loved this show so much, but I find it hard to watch now because it's kinda preachy and slow sometimes. I feel like I had more patience when I was a kid. but I love your videos. keep it up!

I just wanted to let you know that this video would have had to do something very interesting for me to hit the like button, the 4kids commercial break timed with the ads was that thing, well done. that was perfect

12:00 Esper is term used in some older Science Fiction books for people with psychic abilities. For example in the works of Andre Norton. I found this naming quirk quite amusing.
