as a fisherman heres some tips (if you’re fishing at a lake and looking to catch your first few fish):
    1. invest in a spinning rod and reel combo, doesn’t need to be super fancy but invest in one
    2. buy line to put on the reel (recommend braid or monofilament)
    3. Get a small size 4-8 hook at the fishing store and make a drop shot set up (swivel on top, hook in the middle and weight on the bottom).
    4. Use bait like worms or bread. if you are trying to catch catfish or other types use chicken liver or bluegill
    5. have fun

@Oliilovia okay sounds midwest ,me too ,I'll give you a simple trick ,buy or get an old 2/3 hook rubber worm ,tear the rubber worm off ,look at how it's tied then tie your own with a small hook on bottom ,long shank is best ,put a live worm on ,cast softly no sinkers no bobbers 6lb line ,maybe 8 if reel casts good ,bring it in slow . Enjoy and have fun

unless the water is near freezing they wont be at the top, UNLESS they are feeding, dawn, hatch... otherwise you want about 10ft of leader depending how deep the lake is, hale if its 100ft deep they could be 90? temp, PH, species, time of day all play a role.. you need to find out where the feeshes are, then insure your bait crosses their path .. if you're top water fishing you need to bait what they're feeding on.. otherwise they generally wont hit it say if its squito hatch they are feeding on at dawn and they are surfacing to eat them, they wont hit that worm.. generally .. again, bait needs to be introduced to the fish, not the other way around . .
