Hot take but Darryl's voice isn't actually that great for Kiryu. Sure he nailed the tough guy part, but Takaya Kuroda is also able to capture Kiryu's kinder and more emotional side. I always play these games subbed but I have seen some clips of Yong Yea's performance of the more emotional scenes and they're decent enough but he also sounds a bit too young. Dunno if it's just cuz i'm so used to Kuroda, but his performance is just perfect.
Kuroda’s performance will always be the perfect kiryu because the character was built around his voice, and i agree with your takes on the English voices. Darryl is more intimidating than Yong but he only talks in one tone of voice and we never got to see how he could do in a game with good direction and a higher range of emotions, while Yong I feel got so much hate initially it’s hard for people to look at the positives of his voice unless they go in not knowing about all that, but I think he did as great a job as he can but definitely see why people say his voice is too young
@@turboshell Nah he didn't want to voice a main character (literally shit tons of voice line he had to do for the game if it was for kiryu) .. rumor has it he only do ''chill'' stuff nowadays like audiobooks etc.
@ThePhiloSpheres I don’t know if anyone ever confirmed that however I don’t doubt being a video game main character is a big commitment, which is why sega found someone easier and more consistently available to get who was likely handpicked to voice current kazuma kiryu rather than someone who was picked to voice a tough badass guy from yakuza ps2 before kiryu was as defined as he is now Whether or not it was successful is debatable, but I believe that was the intent
I think Yong’s performance was pretty good all things considered, Darryl had the voice down but the acting sounded very stilted and robotic, Yong is able to do more emotional scenes a lot better and is very good at battle yells too. They both have flaws but they both have pros too Daigos new voice I’m not a big fan of, he makes him sound like a cowboy. He did some scenes pretty well but Roger fit perfectly for Daigo and he’ll be missed

Yong Yea sounds like way more of a match for English Kiryu
