    Teen Taal (16 beats)
JollyGul.com is pleased to present a Kathak dance performance by Ravindya Nishi based on teen taal (16 beats).
This presentation is part of JollyGul Indian Classical Music & Dance Series to enhance the awareness and understanding of this tradition in our community and in our audience.
Kathak is one of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance. It is the classical dance form of North India. The origin of Kathak is traditionally attributed to traveling poets in ancient northern India known as Kathakars or storytellers.
Kathak dance is performed with Hindustani classical music and taal system. In this video Vilambit laya (introductory, slow tempo), Madya laya (medium tempo) and Drut laya (concluding section, fast tempo) have been performed.
For those conversant with classical Indian music terms, in Vilambit laya there are uttan, paran judi amad and tukda components. In Madhya laya there are thej amads. Parmelu and 5 small tukdas of Legend Rajendra Gangani Ji named 5 pandav are performed in Drut laya. The uniqueness of these pandav is each tukda is completed in the cycle of 4 beats. Finally jugal bandi has been performed which means the questioning and answering between the tabla player and the dancer.
