great video as usual, very informative.. I don't get it why people does not subscribe to this channel, this channel deserve more than current subscriber number.
I know, I have opened them. I can write my experience here. Quality batteries have pure lead plates, while inferior batteries have impure lead plates. Both of these look same when they are brand new but after a bit of usage, inferior battery plates start flaking off. Sometimes very bad quality batteries don't even have nets (separators) to prevent shorting between plates. And you can measure weight of the batteries, good quality batteries are heavier than inferior ones, but sometimes inferior battery manufacturers add alloys to make their batteries even heavier. I live in India, and I have used and opened up both kinds of batteries. Sadly I couldn't shoot video because my hands were messy and I had no one else to shoot for me.
the battery you showed us was the old fashioned immersed cells... the newer AGM use an acid gel on fiber glass mats... Interesting part is on the control side... nowadays software controled charge uses a "battery sensor" mounted on the negative terminal to sense: internal temperature, overall batt voltage, current using a calibrated shunt (all of this for 12V lead-acid battery chemistry)
You can take a plastic hanger (but it needs to be the one that looks like the red hanger logo) and get some wire cutters and cut the hanger on the two bottom ends
Belated congratulations sir, hearing it for the first time that you're using your wife's toothbrush, it is safe to assume you have recently married, happy for two.
I AM SUCH A DOOFUS I GOT A NEW BATTERY TODAY AND WHEN I WAS INSTALLING IT I ACCIDENTALLY TOUCHED THE POSITIVE TERMINAL WITH A WRENCH AND ANOTHER PIECE OF METAL AND THERE WAS A HUGE SPARK!!! DO I HAVE TO GET A NEW BATTERY NOW? IT WORKS FINE BUT IM WORRIED I MIGHT HAVE DAMAGED IT.
Nice overview but the chemistry could use some work. The equations are not charge balanced. It is not clear which reactions occur during charging vs discharging. I think during discharging the free electrons should be produced on the negative terminal for the external circuit and positive ions should go into the electrolyte.
Interesting, batteries are gone expensive and smaller. They only have a 2 year warranty after that they need to be replaced. At least you outdoors, in the start of winter.
If you do this kinda work daily, you need proper equipment, otherwise your hands will look like a tree bark after a while And sulphuric acid is very itchy on skin.
@@speedkar99 no, it's not. Its EVERY car battery. Want proof? Every production car ever made that has a voltmeter is set at 14.4. if your gauge is high or low of that, you have a problem. Also, use any analog multimeter on any new, charged battery. You'll get 14.4. cheap digital multimeters are useless for anything precise, but a decent Digi multimeter will give you 14.4, too. Only way you pull less than 2.4 from a cell is either a) cell is discharged and needs top off charge. Or b) the battery is toast. Sulfation, stratification, an impact that knocked some lead sulfate out of the grid, something. You can also gas your electrolyte solution off. Faulty charging can lead to excess hydrogen gassing off and changing the chemical composition of the electrolyte to a more neutral pH. But a battery that hasn't been fried will give you 14.4.
I take apart old batteries with an old hatchet to get the lead to make shotgun shot and slugs. My local auto parts store hates me because I keep their acid vat full. Lol Also, it is possible to build an immunity to the acid. I don’t use gloves anymore. ...I’ll probably die of some sort of cancer...
@@speedkar99 The PPE OSHA requires to even top off a battery is soooo lengthy, my employer started replacing them all with maintenance free types. It goes a little something like rubber apron, rubber sleeves, rubber gloves, face shield AND a wash down station. I pretty much equate them with cracking open a nuclear reactor anymore. Have I been brain washed?

After this video I started using a toothbrush to look at plans, point at people, clean everything and play guitar. Handy tool
It sure is. I'd like to see the guitar video
Awesome. A video about how power folding mirrors work would be great.
Good idea...thanks
I love ur improvised pointing tool.

Yep it was quite the learning experience. I want to do it again next year. What kind of car do you think I should do next?

New pink brush. Nice
Yay new gloves and toothbrush
@@speedkar99 send me your old brushes. I need to wash out my neighbors kids mouth. He uses toilet language.

That would be a great comparison if I got my hands in some OE and aftermarket batteries

Is it a good idea to use a small lithium battery?
How does it recharge?

Thanks ... Now I got a whole new pile of resources to steal from 🤣
Wonderful video and an excellent overview of how it all works. Looking forward to more.
Thanks. I'm hoping for more to come too
Won't the reaction end at a point. How does it continuously produce free electrons
The battery is being recharged which reverse the reaction
For the negative plates, what happens to the lead sulfate and water that is produced? Another great video BTW. Thank you.
Recharging reverses the reaction
speedkar99 ah thanks!
Which have many plates? Positive plates or Negative plates
What happens if you put baking soda inside of the battery would it die because of the neutralization ??
Yes
speedkar99 Thanks 😊
my car battery requires distilled water. What kind of batt is it?
Thanks, Rick Moranis.
Something I don't want to mess with. But very satisfied my curiosity is over about this one 😏

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try to keep them coming...it's winter here now!
5:53 why isn't it 4h2o ?
You should have mentioned the reverse reaction in the video for recharging the battery
Yes I missed that.
I'd like to see an AGM battery, please? Thank you.
It doesn't have liquid, and has glass mats which soak up all the acid.
Good idea...I'd like to see that too if I get my hands on one
Thanks for what you do... Wish I was your younger bro!!

No toothbrushes were harmed in the making of this video.
Agreed. Except, well maybe, my wife's toothbrush ...lol
Great vid...but yeah, CO2 is actually pretty harmful in certain concentrations...
If I remember from breaking bad, plastics dont melt in acid! thats why that battery housing is made of plastic.
I thought this was my teachers (Mr. Kahn) demonstration for a minute
damn good!

Can I have my battery back now?
Yea
Couldn't you just discharge the battery so that there is water inside instead of acid to make this safer? 😅
2.4 v per cell, not 2.1. Max Voltage on a 6 cell is 14.4 v. Get your math right
