Great reaction and insight to the battle! I found the Warhawk channel a while back and subbed there already, otherwise I'd do it now.
On the topic of brother versus brother: I am reading a memoir by Charles Edward Clark, who was captain of the USS Oregon during the Spanish-American War. He was aboard the USS Constitution when the civil war was breaking out as a naval cadet.
Clark tells a story about an officer he knew, Lieutenant William Parker, who was a Virginian but felt it was his duty to stay with the US Navy. His brother, Foxhall, decided to resign from the Navy to join the South. Before each went to join their respective nations, they met one night and argued with each other, trying to convince the other of their cause. They were both so convincing that each of them switched sides. William ended up resigning and joining the South and Foxhall stayed with the North.
Clark says, "Years later, in Washington, William Parker pointed out his brother to a friend, saying: 'There goes Foxhall, the disloyal Unionist, on full pay, and here stands William, the loyal Secessionist, down on his uppers.'" Just thought that was an interesting story and your comment on the Kentucky units facing one another reminded me of it.

Your reactions are always so interesting whatever the subject, you add to the original rather than just commenting on it. Another suggestion i hope you don't mind, The Armchair Historian has an excellent video on Operation Market Garden and I thought a look at that prior to your visit to the Netherlands would be good. It looks as if everything went wrong. Some content on it while you're there would also be good.

I believe Johnston left it to Beauregard to organize the attack and he formed long lines instead of formations

its so crazy to me how the confederates were on the offensive against a well fortified enemy on the first day. Then faced a huge counterattack by far superior federal numbers the second day and still had significantly less casualties.

Almost every soldier they had in the western theater was brought up to Corinth to end Grant's invasion. Neither Grant or Sherman thought Johnston was capable of an offensive. That's why was so far away from his army and caught complete by surprise. Benjamin Prentice and Don Carlos Buell may have won the war for the union without them Grant possibly never gets promoted.

It's still mindboggling to me that both armies lost something like 30% of their total force to casualties. Just an insane amount and sadly, to be quickly eclipsed.

1:03 Dr Alexander Clarke who generally specializes in naval warfare but also does some civil war stuff did a livestream lecture on the battle today and part of his take was that this shows that Beurgard doesn't really get what's happened. While yes the Union has taken heavy casualties on day 1 they have fallen back on a position where they can be reinforced and supported and that seeing day 1 and the position the union was in as anything other than precarious for the confederacy is wrong

@@VloggingThroughHistory I don't have nearly that many because my father's side of the family was still in Europe! ( I recently did the Ancestry DNA test and I'm 45% Swedish/Danish , if THAT tells you anything!) I had some ancestors on my mom's side that fought on the Confederate side, since most of her family ended up in Texas. Ironically. one is buried in Camp Chase, Ohio - where my dad's family ended up living.

Why would the south let the union walk right back into the hortnets nest line they spent half their strength trying to break the day before? I get it may not be defendable from the other direction but surely something could have been done…

I'm always confused, why did people think it was going to be a short war? i always hear that people on both sides thought "oh, it'll be over by christmas." The Southern leaders surely must have known that without their opposition Lincoln was likely to remain in power, and that even a much smaller population breaking away in the Revolutionary war took years of fighting. And the North should have also known that putting down a revolt like the southern succession was likely going to mean killing nearly every man willing to revolt. is it just naive optimism or surety in their soldiery/equipment/commanders?
