Can confirm, this was on REPEAT during my 2014/15 high school years! Sloppy Toppy and Mamacita are absolute classics from my old friend group and DYSTI, Backyard, The Prayer, Dont Play, and Skyfall are all classic Travis to me!
@@lennysummers It's different for every generation, cherish the music you have in those formative years because they'll become timeless bangers no matter how much later in life!
Backyard & Grey are literal timeless songs for me, just takes me back to being a hs freshmen in 2014. When the mixtape dropped these were automatically my favorites by far, even back then as a 14 yr old kid I could see the potential Travis had, and it all came full circle when he lived up to the expectations in 2018 with Astroworld, I just wish I could go back to the LaFlame Era man, this mixtape will always hold a special place in my heart🤞🏽
DBR came out my freshman year of HS and I can say it truly changed the way I viewed and listened to music. I used to be that person that would heavily focus and favor traditional/lyrical rap like Kendrick, Cole, Joey, Nas etc… But when I listened to this for the first time, the dark/eerie production and Travis’ ability to use auto tune and his voice as an instrument blew me away. Now in 2023 some songs may sound a little outdated and less refined, but back then it was like nothing I’d ever heard before sonically. It helped me understand the importance of production and melodies, and made the music from artists like Thug and Future finally click for me (at the time they were considered “mumble” rappers). Although I do think Rodeo is his best work and it’s my personal all time favorite album, I love the experimental rawness on DBR. It has songs like DYSTI and Skyfall which are both in my personal Top 5 favorite Trav songs. Anyways great reaction, I can’t wait to hear Utopia and see your guys’ reaction to it as well!
DBR is one of those “Time Machine” albums for me. It takes me back to a happy time in my life and I love to listen to every single song. So many different moods so it’s makes for a great listen, or you can just put Sloppy Toppy on repeat, that works too
Always had a fond appreciation for this mixtape as songs like zombies, skyfall, and dysti are very much early versions of things travis would perfect later on rodeo, but that rawness of what he was doing on here always bring back good memories of this era of travis and the songs overall are really good. Oh and in case y'all were wondering Quintana pt 1 was on the mixtape you mentioned that came out before this one, Owl Pharaoh
I love how y’all really take in the music and look at it objectively. Like even if you may not like a song as much you can highlight the strong points of a track and who it may cater to and what the artist was trying to achieve. Best page
The first video I saw of you guys was your father’s introduction to Hip Hop with TPAB! I’ve enjoyed literally watching him become a fan over the year. He’s learned a new appreciation for the music and I’ve grown a new respect for him. My father raised me in hip hop and I really enjoy sharing other types of music with him and these videos really inspired me to share more. So I just wanna thank y’all! Btw DAYS BEFORE RODEO was the 1st album I thought of during that TPAB introduction, thinking of how long it’d take before he’s “ready” for that side of rap, and look! Keep going y’all, please!
I love this album I bought and downloaded it on Apple Music before it was removed and I still have and listen to it to this day because it’s timeless to me
Got into Travis my freshman year of college in 2017. Dude had mainstream hip hop in a chokehold. Antidote was still getting played at parties, Goosebumps, Pick up The Phone, and then Love Galore. On top of 2017/2018 being goated years already. Then Astroworld dropping 2018 my sophmore year, that's when I really got into most of his soundcloud music (unreleased). Man, miss those days.
To mention Kevins take on what Utopia should be in the beginning of the video: Astrothunder had real bass played by Thundercat, one of the main reasons why I love that song so much. I'd like more collabs like that. Lost Forever, if it's on Utopia, might be a favorite for Kevin
Had the chance to see Travis Scott on my birthday during the Rodeo Tour in 2015 and it was by far the most energetic show I've seen to date. This album was such a refreshing change for hip hop and I absolutely knew he was going to be a superstar from that mixtape!
Always super entertained and engaged by these videos. Actually had the chance to serve the dad at the restaurant where I work; super cool and funny dude. Love this channel.
Best review you guys have done by far😂😂😂😂 straight fun and I’m glad the both of you had not heard this before! The reactions were priceless!😂😂😂 I definitely felt the same way about the tape when I first heard it and showed it to everyone I knew
This is the Travis Scott I fell in love with no homo. That unpolished, grimy, bigger than life auto tune sound is what set him apart from everybody else and is the reason why I enjoy his music so much. DYSTI, Mamacita, Sloppy Toppy, Backyard, BACC will always be legendary to me
loved this reaction and yalls channel. i remember listening to a song from owl pharaoh first back then not realizing who travis was at the time. then i was reminded by my friend in high school when he dropped DBR and it was a wrap ever since. yall encapsulated it perfectly about how i felt at the time as a kid listening to that tape. the production is definitely rough and not as rich as his studio albums as yall realized listening to it in 2023. im biased since this was what put me onto travis but i really think DBR is his peak form in terms of the dark atmospheric vibes and ideas he brought. this is where he was LA FLAME or LA FLAME was truly born. Rodeo is an undisputed classic but i feel as if the ideas on DBR were more varied and interesting but Rodeo's production and execution is just way more polished. DBR encapsulates a moment in time equal to how nostalgic and amazing 2016 was for me. Its my personal favorite travis project and my favorite mixtape of all time. I still replay it often every year. Birds felt like a return to his La Flame form in instances. I like it and its definitely underrated/over critiqued among travis scott fans. Astroworld is a great Travis Scott album to appease his mainstream reach but the 5 year wait since then hasnt been great for OG travis fans. many like myself have grown to enjoy other artists far more in recent times because of that and his mediocre features in the past couple years. I hope Travis really did recall his mindset from back when he was making owl pharaoh and during the DBR/Rodeo days for Utopia. Im tapering my expectations because everyone overhypes everything these days but as a fan of Travis since i was a kid, I still have faith and expectations that he can maintain and help the genre to grow like others are doing such as Uzi and Carti. Ive been a fan of carti and uzi more lately but travis is still the biggest and best trapper so he has a lot of pressure and expectations to live up to regardless.
I agree with this heavy. It basically describes my experience with Travis. I was like 12-13 when this came out and it absolutely hooked me, because it was a different take to rap then what I knew before. It had the Kanye influence but with a darker, atmospheric tone. Hooked me from the start especially with DBR. I also hella agree, Travis took way too long. 5 year gap is insane. New artists start coming out and making their mark. His features haven’t been strong for the most part. A 7-8 song EP around 2021 start would’ve been perfect.
Man this review took my back to when this mixtape literally ran my summer with my friends and I. Had just graduated high school and had one of the best summers of my life. Such a dope review
This mixtape was my first introduction to Travis, 2015, as Rodeo’s about to release. I was doing a lot of commuting so I had a lot of time to myself to digest these sounds. Nothing like I’ve ever heard before. But I am a huge Kid CuDi fan and would slightly hear some influence. First semester in college and this tape easily became my theme music for the following months. I would think about these songs everyday. I realized everything Trav did on these tracks was what I was sonically attracted to; drums/melodies. From “DYSTI” & “Backyard” being the first songs I was obsessed with, to being able to see Trav perform “Basement Freestyle” on the Birds Eye View Tour and now in 2023 “Zombies” is probably the song I’ve played most this year. Can’t wait for Utopia.
For me, I think Khruangbin are one of the best artists in music right now and an artist like Travis could work amazing with them. They're a psychedelic funk/rock type of group but they're so unique and encapsulating, I wouldn't be surprised if they get even more exposure soon.

I can guarantee you this album will grow on you and you will be obsessed with it. The rawness in this album is what's so good about it, and part of the reason I was obsessed with it in 2014, and kinda lost interest in Travis towards his later albums, was because his later stuff was missing the rawness he had at first. Love his growth, but definitely I tend to gravitate to this early stuff. Man I was obsessed with this album. Also, Quintana pt.1 is on Owl Pharoah.
Man young thug had the best verse on mamacita lowkey. I loved his laid back flow on that and when he said “I do not fuck with America, I get it straight off the boat” 🔥🔥🔥
Sloppy toppy is my favourite off the mixtape. The production is all over the place yet hits so fucking hard, as well as everyone absolutely murdering their verse.
in my opinion Owl Pharaoh is one of my favorite Travis Scott projects. You can really hear and feel the influence Kanye had on it as well as hearing the influence of Travis on Kanye's later works, like Yeezus. Great video guys!
There’s actually a video where Travis is recording the hook for Skyfall in the studio. Probably one of the most hype “we struck gold” moments to watch organically
I heavent really listened to this as a mixtape itself more of a collection of songs and going back with this reminds me of some little things that gave my Travis playlist a lot of flavor
DYSTI is one of his best songs. Don't Play is also insane to hear live, i honestly think that song summarizes the live show experience of travis scott.
I remember this dropping in later 2014 and seeing Travis live in spring 2015 when he went on tour with Thug. Was the best concert I had ever been to. Prior to Trav coming on stage Future 56 Nights dropped the same day as the concert so they ran through that a bunch of times. It was just a special time for music for me and memories that I made during my time in college and the nostalgia music brings. Days Before Rodeo will always be special for me and really all music that dropped that I liked from 2013-2017. Great review fellas!
