I would have to upgrade those poles, but I like the design of it. Having somewhere sheltered to sit and cook in relative comfort is a great addition to a tent.
Surprisingly, the poles have held up but I’d say it is a good all in one package for lighter weather camping (although the poles are still holding out!) I’ve recently bought a DD Tarp and will get some better poles for that and can use the poles for this as well 👍🏻
You could even pitch the rear of the tarp over the bike and have all the poles available for the front area for maximum head room and a bike shelter to boot 👍.
Cracking video 👍. I'm a newbie and I'm trying to decide whether to go on my first wild camping with the bobcat tent and tarp, or just go for it and go for the tarp and bivi set up . Have you tried a bivi set up with this tarp ? If so have you made a video on it ?
@@CptPootash have you bought the bobcat and tarp, they would be just the job for a wild camp! I carry a tarp but don’t always use it, for me it’s more rain use than dry but gives a good camp set up and currently I’m using a Robens Tarp, very similar to OEX one. I’ve never used a bivi set up but have thought about it, just think a small tent is quick enough and has room to move, however I’ll probably give it a go sometime!
@@thecampingbiker791 I've bought a few tents to be honest 😂. I was thinking about taking the bobcat because I've set them both up together just to try them out and it looked like a good set up. It's giving rain and 30 mph winds on Friday and Saturday up the lakes so might be pushing that tarp to the limit 😂
I use the oex tarp all the time as small tent awning , you need steel pole at front as it is under great stress - you can use the alloy poles to prop up a front corner for a view in good weather! !
I believe the poles where designed to bend slightly, because you can't beat mother nature in the wind. Otherwise, it would rip the end of the tarp of the eyelets. Great review tho.
Thanks for that, I’ve just used it again in bad weather on trip to the Lakes and it held up in very blustery winds and rain giving shelter again!! I’ve got it packed down to size of a bag of sugar 😆
Got the Vango version for my Halo tent, adds extra room for sitting and eating despite only having one pole, very light too which is obviously important on the bike.
When using with the cloud up 2 tent, can you put the “front” at the back over the spine of the tent? The longer peak may sit over the tent better and still provide shelter at the front. Going to get one and find out I think 😊
Sorry seem to have missed your comment Kevin! I think you could set up as described and it might just achieve more porch area..they’re cheap enough to buy and always useful 👍🏻
Got the feeling that due to the small piece of fabric in the corners will help it last a lot longer & stand up to stronger winds without ripping the tarp. Looks like it surely is a good one.
I’ve had it out in very wet and windy weather three times now and it stood its ground on all three occasions...even though pole was bending in the wind it didn’t break so looks a tough little tarp 👍🏻
You reference "more heavy duty tarps" a number of times, which brands are you thinking of? For back packing, where weight is critical, you tend to pay more money to reduce weight, not increase it. But I guess weight it not such an issue if you are on a bike and using campsites, rather than carrying everything in a pack and wild camping. Horses for courses.
Was thinking of DD Tarps when commenting on the video, but you are right for backpacking lighter the better.. as I’m motorcycling the weight isn’t an issue but I do mostly have lightweight backpacking gear for the pack size. I’ve subsequently bought a lightweight (0.68kg without poles) Robens Wing Tarp and like it very much, excellent one for backpacking, something I’m planning on doing next year with wild camping thrown in 😀 Have a look, just done an initial review.. ua-cam.com/video/2soF4fqH8wA/v-deo.htmlsi=PYZh1pJwbD9SvShX
Peg out some rear guy lines with rear pole inserted, laid out on ground, then with peg and other poles in hand insert front pole, lifting as you do so and then tension the from out with guy line and peg. Then, just go round and peg out all other guy lines doing a final tension to finish off.
@@thecampingbiker791 thanks so much trying this now... Can I ask does it matter how many poles you use on front and back, it seems like you can have the front as tall as you want?
@@underthedome8041 you can configure anyway that meets your needs, in bad weather I’ve had just one pole at rear. Best to try different pole lengths to see what you like best

great idea, may give that a try!
I wasn’t sure about this tarp. Answered all my questions I had about it. Looks like I’ll be buying one. It’s to supplement my bivy bag
Hi Robert, I’ve used it several times since the video and I’m driving rain..worked a treat! Thanks for the feedback, appreciated, regards Andrew

Good point and it has stood up to some very gusty weather 👍🏻

It definitely would 😆 and thanks for that 👍🏻

Mmmmm. Tempting as it’s difficult to get things in a one man tent with me when I’m too big for it haha.
Also packing down that small. I’m sold!
Just get a bigger bike and tent 😂

Only £29 at the moment!

What a lot of nonsense about single/double stitching! Peg out guy lines in line with seams and tension appropriately. (But I was in the Scouts!)

These tarps are for bivy bags.
Makes sense with shape, might have to try a bivy next 😂
