Josh...You. mentioned Steve Cropper for funky, in-the-pocket rhythm playing. Steve has ALWAYS been one of my favorite guitar players! Years ago in an interview, Steve was asked why he didn’t play more lead guitar. He replied (something to the effect) that when you take out the rhythm, it’s like the bottom of the song falls out, because the rhythm is the glue that holds everything together. How true...how true...

The way that Josh keeps the groove going at all times is so great! He really does get the crowd moving. I've had the pleasure of seeing him play in Budapest twice and he was awesome!

There's a feeling in the heart with some players that ca'nt be learned, it's about how they feel inside. Some people may think that that's bullshit. But as well as knowledge and technique, that ends up being a huge part of their sound.

One thing i feel is going unmentioned here, is his super groovy strumming. Been at it for a couple of hours, and oof it's hard to mix that pattern with lead. So very very cool!

I actually started doing that just recently with a c 7 blues rhythm while jamming some blues with my lead player . Great tips that'll spice up any rhythm players riffs !

I am working on jazz comping and finding chord variations, but it is still all about the groove, same with Gospel and any music.

Amazing rhythm and licks, just super hard to figure out all the subtleties in the licks even after watching over and over again at slow speeds. Wish you could tab these licks out to make sure I’m practicing it correctly. Then again, I guess whatever feels and sounds right works right?

4:24 ... Josh Smith got it from Robben Ford, and Robben Ford got it from the Mickey Baker's Jazz book (ref: ua-cam.com/video/JoQVAWbA-F8/v-deo.html). Perhaps sales of that book have increased since that Robben Ford interview on UA-cam. When an accomplished musician tells the story of how he started, then that's very encouraging.
