I don't think its fair to compare the arcade version or this version to the FC version, because they took a lot of liberties with that port.
Darrow Nemecek-Gulack Well I'd say the PC Engine version is the best, it's nearly arcade perfect but with an extra level, and difficulty options. The rare kind of port that actually improves on the original. I don't blame you for not getting very far though, this game is HELL.
BelatedGamer Personally, I like all the stuff they added and tweaked in the FC version. I MIGHT like it better than the arcade version, but I really like both games. I'll play the PC Engine version a little more now for curiosity's sake. Should be easier to see more of the game than Gradius 3, where getting past one level feels like an accomplishment.
Darrow Nemecek-Gulack Have you tried the SNES port of Gradius 3? It removes a few levels, and replaces one with an original, but the difficulty is lowered significantly.
I need to look up who the composer was on this. The OST still holds up. And I STILL don't understand why it took so long for this to come to the US in any form. It's CRIMINAL.
Throwing the existing Gradius I & II together as a Gradius Deluxe Pack like the PSX and SAT had complete with FMV opening and such would also be pretty spiffy.
For some reason I've always preferred the Famicom version of this game (and the 2a03 soundtrack, probably one of the best arcade to fc soundtrack conversions.) I have had my fun with this port though.
Also theres a very cool Patch/Hack for the NES Port called Gradius 2 AC Death ( www.romhacking.net/hacks/1574/ ) which makes it pretty close to the arcade with all the added stuff in NES Port still in there.
The demo mode is gone, where the game shows off some of the stages, replaced by a kickass intro. And if the game is beaten on the hardest setting, you get an ending showing all the boss ships after getting devastated by the Vic Viper. Plus like the first PCE Gradius port, an extra stage.
Yes, with a boss called Desert Core, even has a trick you can perform, and is quite risky to do, to gain an extra 6 lives (In the extra stage). There's a part where you can go to the top, or the bottom, which requires extremely tight movements, get through it, and the announcer will say YEAH, and you'll gain 6 extra lives.
A copy of this ran me $30, and I play it in Ootake (Magic Engine desyncs the intro for some stupid reason, the intro from the arcade, with the games listed by year, along with pictures from them), looking back, I don't regret it at all.
lightsouthaha for the PSP, yes indeed, there was just one slight thing that bugged me about the PSP Parodius Portable collection, some of the music got changed due to copyrights. Salamander one was cool with Xexex on it as well.
That brain boss was actually ported directly into Salamander / Life Force as the first stage boss. Not only that, I recognized the aliens and the alien cocoons in the third or fourth level as nearly the exact same sprites that were used in Contra's final level as well. Oh, Konami, back when you were the gods of my childhood.
But Salamander is literally shown in the opening sequence of this game.. How could it have been ported to a game that didn't exist (by what you're saying)?
Look up people like Peg, or Seahawk, or Aquas, those guys are the true master pilots of Gradius, using no save states or other tools to help them win. I know one of the channel owners from a forum I help mod, he's said no skills are in these long plays (outside of one of the Mushihimesama longplays by a guy called Snake Eater, a young man who pretty much dedicates his gaming to 1CCing shmups). Those are the playthroughs you watch and go WOW for, true skill, lots of dedication to shoot em ups.
I'd like to see that lady who does that really good Andrea Libman/Fluttershy voice impression do a "Let's Play" narrative on this one. Oh for certain purposes, let's name the 1st stage boss "Philomena" so we can find out how she reacts when she is forced to 'kill' Philomena in the game.
I tried the accelerators they only go down or up they don't go to automatically find their target and that's not in order That's more like that la la fenta I got to Vulcan the volcano in space where you mentioned volcanoes in space a volcano The house of Europe must have a surface to stand on not a space and even if it is broken those eruptions should not go all over but only down Because there is no gravity in space just like that exaggerated ice when you are close all the ice cubes and blocks of ice come towards you.
