Arguably the best non-CD shooter game for the PC-Engine. Full utilization of the color palette, sound synths and sound channels. Gameplay is fantastic, and soundtrack is just amazing for its time.
I can't believe how impressive this game is on the audiovisual front. Other than the sound (which is phenomenal) you could have told me this was a Snes game and I may have believed you. But no this is from a tiny little machine from 1987!
0:57 Stage 1 Orbital Station Under Construction 5:37 Stage 2 Cloud Bank 10:54 Stage 3 Ruined City 15:26 Stage 4 Valley Stronghold 21:01 Stage 5 Battleship Chase 27:28 Stage 6 Zeograd Capital 37:09 Final Stage Rush Back to Earth 40:18 Ending 45:08 Caravan Stage 47:00 Caravan Stage Midpoint 50:11 High Score 50:53 Short Caravan Stage 53:02 High Score
After Final Soldier, Bomberman 94, Neutopia II, Jackie Chan, Cross Wiber and I maybe would put even Galaga 88 above (DAT boss defeat track!). But hey, the PCE was a chiptune marvel kicking both the Mega Drive and the SNES in them ballz.
Its is hard to pick wich is the best of the trilogy but I pick Soldier Blade I believe Final Soldier is 2nd place but I cant get enough of soldier blade soundtrack so good I cant stop playing
Longplay #16 from PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 next Tuesday, June 4th. Soldier Blade will be playing with KAGE-008, xRavenXP or Schlauchi. This game is normal but it's hard to pass all operations.
A very impressive shmup on PC Engine that really shows it off brilliantly, and is just a great game to boot. I'd be curious to see how the SNES would handle a version of this game, because it can technically do absolutely everything seen graphically and heard with the audio here and quite a bit more besides, so the only real thing to be careful of is making sure the code is properly optimized to avoid any potential slowdown on SNES. And I'd be curious to know if it could handle that. It would just be an interesting exercise making a SNES version of this game where it basically doesn't have to use more than one background layer (unless in such a way that it actually saves a bunch of sprites where the PC Engine is having to use them to fake background layers or bigger enemies or even the HUD and such), and doesn't have to use all its available sprites or colours or audio channels, etc, and see how well it would perform overall by comparison. I mean, I know the SNES can do a whole bunch of stuff well beyond the PC Engine, but I wonder how it would hold up when basically making exactly the same game as on PC Engine and one that probably pushes that 7.68 MHz CPU on the PC Engine a lot of the time, which is the main on-paper advantage the PC Engine has over SNES.
The game is downright perfection. The soundtrack, the subtle use of foreshadowing and callbacks, the gameplay, the BOSSES, it's incredible. The Wii U virtual console release is far and away my favorite game released in 2017. I hope Konami makes a new entry some day.
This is the full proof that you re watching a 16 bit system on his best if you still trash the 8 bit cpu you may compare this game to Gunac on the nes Power Strike 2 on the master system and Aleste 2 on the msx wich are limit pushers for each system than come back and watch the giant laser smart bomb and giant boss figths along with rocking music.
Compile were masters and pushed every platform they worked on to the absolute limits. What they accomplished with Super Aleste on SNES is insane. Best use of mode 7 on the system.
You know, i never did get a chance to play Final Soldier. But I love Blade... this was one of my favorite shooters of all time. Second to Gate & Lords of thunder.
Soldier Blade is the best of the Star Soldier series. Also, one of the best overall vertical shooting games. The game has it all! great graphics, gameplay, and rocking soundtrack. I put it up there with 3 great classics: Radiant Silvergun (the best!), Space Megaforce, and Raiden.
I'll never forget how unforgiving old games were. If you didn't master this game it was almost IMPOSSIBLE to beat it. The boss at 33:59 fucks me up if I don't use my specials and avoid getting blown up. And the music in this game was BEAUTIFULLY SCORED. Sometimes I enjoyed just listening to the soundtrack using the cheat code.
Bigtruckseriesreview Motorsports That boss was intentionally so difficult I think it was supposed to feel like a final boss. It's interesting because it's spheres attack teleports you.
@Snyperwolf91 I particularly miss the many GREAT arcade games that came out in the mid to late nineties. Maybe you were too young to remember anything about the arcade scene.
I go back and forth between Mega Drive and PC Engine shmups. Best systems for the genre, hands down. Usually, PC Engine has the better color and music. Mega Drive more visual complexity and perhaps a bit more variety.
best 8 bit system without a doubt, and arguably for shmups anyway beats snes and megadrive.my fav system of all time.this game and galaga 88 always get a bloody good blasting.
I got this chip. I simply cannot beat it! If only I had save states. I can get to the gold head boss second form and that's about it. You are the master
I'm gonna buy a turbo duo and a SegaCDx so I can play my old Genesis and Turbo16 games. These games were so much fun, I actually have a 32 inch SDTV to enjoy them.
the soundtrack is just awesome ! even the graphix are jizztastic ! =3 thats a shooter for me . if the music rocks and the bosses look really badass then its a great game for a shmup-fan like me . =D i must try this . =P
@ValisHD i hope so . ^^ such shooters are really rare this days . =/ and even gaming is today not this what it was .... i miss those years ..... the golden years of shmups , arcade games and fun-games. -___- the 90s ..... =(
loved this and super star soldier... wasnt a big fan of final soldier.. soundtracks are a big part of these games for me and final soldier just didnt have it.
I actually wanted to correct myself. The audio in the later levels of Super Star Soldier is stunning, but i never got that far. PRtsonally, i still prefer Final Soldier over Super Star Soldier, though, Soldier Blade beats them both for me.
Man, that siren at 27:45. It's like it's screaming for help, almost as if you're the bad guy going on this rampage that they can't prevent in the slightest no matter what they throw at you, even the music sort of catches the feeling. You know it really makes me think about the oppression and destruction of indigenous Americans and the inability and impossibility of ever being able to restructure their society, ways of life, and simply live peacefully like they did without invaders and overall powerless to prevent themselves from being taken advantage of or fooled by things they've never experienced or for that matter lead lives of certainty and confidence in what could very well be a cunning ploy (life and a pursuit of trusting success out of the system and people from effort), even if they've never seriously realized the possibility. It really spans a rare emotion of just being bitterly hateful but powerless to do anything, and that's exactly what these guys look like, the music and sirens sound like at 27:45. Like maybe even all those "alert"s we keep hearing are the enemy preparing to have to defend their main structures and most powerful defenses from an ever-encroaching and destroying invader, not your own allies warning you of a "boss."
I always wonder how the way smaller production Final Soldier (1/3rd the staff on the staff roll) outperforms this by a big margin. Solder Blade is cool, but Final Soldier is way better.
Laser weapon have visual glitch - showed not correct on screen, not how in game in 3 sides, on videos always only on 1 or 2, when recording videos or when doing streams, it is strange... How i see now(After watched this video), it is not only for me...
That's because it's a visual effect that only can be visible at 60 fps. The laser it's blinking on and off fast to simulate transparency. This video and maybe others you have seen are running at 30 fps, that's why it doesn't show the laser correctly.
@ryanc519 yeah... i only knew splatterhouse back then in the pizzahut. -__- but i still do my homework and i play shmups on many emulators but its not that awesome feeling like on the arcades or home-consoles. =/
I thought Final soldier was quite good in the audio department, just beat it 10 minutes ago. To me Super Star Soldier kinda falls short in the audio department, even though it's still way above most pc engine games in that regard.
@ryanc519 this with the FPS hell is true but i was born 91 and not 2003 . but thats really true ! i have enough with FPS-games because every second week comes a COD-copy and we just have the choice between many lame games on the next-gen-systems. T-T i still play snes and psx because back then was gaming about fun , tricks , secrets , glitches and high-scores . ^^ i still miss the 90s with the great cartoons , movies and games . DX

Todd Harris better than many CD games...
Soldier Blade with clean music, almost without shot noises on my channel in the PC Engine playlist
Blazing Lazers is still better but this is a close second
0:57 Stage 1 Orbital Station Under Construction
5:37 Stage 2 Cloud Bank
10:54 Stage 3 Ruined City
15:26 Stage 4 Valley Stronghold
21:01 Stage 5 Battleship Chase
27:28 Stage 6 Zeograd Capital
37:09 Final Stage Rush Back to Earth
40:18 Ending
45:08 Caravan Stage
47:00 Caravan Stage Midpoint
50:11 High Score
50:53 Short Caravan Stage
53:02 High Score
The parallax starting at 18:35 when the crack in the ground opens up... that's insane!
A carbon copy of Musha's level 3
Probably the best chip tunes of any Turbo game.
the stage 4is crazy
Air Zonk is hard to top
Came here to say the same, Cheers mate
Soldier Blade with clean music, almost without shot noises on my channel in the PC Engine playlist

The Soldier series for the PC Engine is one of if not the only trilogy where I can say I like all the games equally.
Its is hard to pick wich is the best of the trilogy but I pick Soldier Blade I believe Final Soldier is 2nd place but I cant get enough of soldier blade soundtrack so good I cant stop playing
Best game on the PC-Engine, hands down. Everything was on point in this game, pretty good gameplay, good graphics and awesome soundtrack.
It’s the best game but it’s only got pretty good gameplay ?
Best game is Bomberman 94. Period. It is hitting the 10 in every aspect, graphics, music, gameplay, animation, multiplayer, kawaii....
I think Final Soldier is right there with it.

Yeah it's so good, some of the best chiptunes ever. Made by Hudson Soft though not Konami
@@Vriess123 Konami bought Hudson Soft and owns all of their IP now.
I was hooked on this game a number of years back. Like others have mentioned the music is great.
"I'll BE BACK!!"
*Badass level ost starts back up*

OMFG that intro!
Amazing soundtrack

i think super star soldier is the best
I agree Soldier Blade is very good but Super Star Soldier is still a step above.
it itsn't. not on this planet its not
@@EqualsDeath Weird it's like people have their own individual opinions or something.
@@AlchemistTongueDrums you can have your opinion, but it-s just that, an opinion. it doesn't have anything to do with objective reality
Seriously dope soundtrack!

AWESOME game

dat epic arcade music and graphic nervosity! On this futurist pc engine Nec
best 8 bit system without a doubt, and arguably for shmups anyway beats snes and megadrive.my fav system of all time.this game and galaga 88 always get a bloody good blasting.
Javier Hardeman actually 8bit processor with 16bit graphics
Quality system. Games run so fast with no slowdown
I got this chip. I simply cannot beat it! If only I had save states. I can get to the gold head boss second form and that's about it. You are the master
This is actually one of the easier shmups on wii's VC and one of the best
27:28 is when the shit gets real.
we can all agree the soundtracks are the reason this game is so good
@Neb6 other way around
I'm gonna buy a turbo duo and a SegaCDx so I can play my old Genesis and Turbo16 games. These games were so much fun, I actually have a 32 inch SDTV to enjoy them.
This game impregnats hippos and rapes Dinosaurs.
Konami should launch a compilation of this series on modern consoles, I would buy it.
Love this game.
I love how at 33:58 the game can’t handle the wavy screen, so the music fades in and out.
34:55 has entered the chat
the soundtrack is just awesome ! even the graphix are jizztastic ! =3 thats a shooter for me . if the music rocks and the bosses look really badass then its a great game for a shmup-fan like me . =D i must try this . =P
This game and it's sequel need to be remastered for the Wii, PS4 and Xbox!
Can't listen to this without thinking of Zeta Force

the ost of the 3th level is reminding me the 3th Level of Aldynes
50:36, 53:10 You goofy little- xD
Para mi gusto las armas tienen poca variacion. Me gusta mas el BLAZING LAZERSE. Este esta genial para una consola con la potencia que tenia.
You said it!
loved this and super star soldier... wasnt a big fan of final soldier.. soundtracks are a big part of these games for me and final soldier just didnt have it.
Amazing game, Amazing system.
Musha (Genesis) vs. Soldier Blade? Tough choice.
both great games
Soldier Blade for gameplay, MUSHA for style.
Soldier Blade for the music
I actually wanted to correct myself. The audio in the later levels of Super Star Soldier is stunning, but i never got that far. PRtsonally, i still prefer Final Soldier over Super Star Soldier, though, Soldier Blade beats them both for me.

This game is a prime example of why some shmups should be rendered down to 30p frame blend because youtube can't handle 60p :/

Is it just me or was the R-Gray from Raystorm made of some of these bosses' weapon pods?
Is anyone else here because it’s Lupe Fiascos favorite game apparenlty?
Is it me or the bullets SFX sound too low? I've tried on my mISTer fpga device and it sounds pretty low too.
That games is the shit! And I first played it when it was released on Virtual Console. I love this.
