I'm 37 years old now. When I used to visit my grandparents in Brooklyn NY my grandmother used to play this record for me. Now she is in her mid 90's at an old age home. I pull this song on youtube on my android phone and play it for her. Sometimes she cries but usually this old song makes her happy.

Idk why Americans shove their parents in an old folks home when they get older. It makes me feel sick. I mean they take care of u from birth til they finally leave the house and bam you just drop them off at a home when they're old. Yikes....

Lou Monte was always a favorite at our house. I had to explain the dialect to my WASP wife. Back in the early 20th century in NY, there were Italian Americans who immigrated from many parts of Italy (mostly southern), and naturally they spoke their respective regional dialects. But they needed to communicate across these different languages, and so over time there developed a uniquely Italian American dialect, and this is predominantly what Lou Monte uses in this delightful song, as well as many others. My parents and my godparents were from different regions, so they spoke this way to each other. Hearing it again makes me mist up for those days of my youth. Today, I speak a better dialect than I do the standard Italian.

It's hilarious! 😂😂 for years I'm trying to understand this song, but it's hopeless🤣 parts of it are like Chinese! LOL! Still enjoy it dough and then I sing along and don't know what I 'm saying. It's the most stupid thing.🤣🤣 God bless New York Happy New Year to you all.🙏🍀✌️💯👍🎉🤩

He's singing in a Northern Calabrian dialect which is very similar to the Neapolitan dialect. I'm Napolitan and I understand every word. I'll give ya'll just a little cause y'all aint paying me for translation: "There's a mouse in the cellar in the wall. Every night he comes out when the house is dark. In the middle of the kitchen he dances all alone. He looks like a little villain, even the cat is scared! Pepino the mouse you make me embarrassed! You damned mouse, you're not to enter my house! Tonight in the kitchen I'll leave you with a little wine, and when you're drunk I'll catch you!" Lou recorded this song in 1962 and he "borrowed" the idea of incorporating sped-up high-pitched vocals from Napolitan singer / pianist Renato Carosone who first used the technique on his 1958 hit "Chella La" In fact, "The Alvin Show" debuted in 1961 and featured the same sped-up high pitched voices for it's 3 chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore. They claim a trademark but Renato did it FIRST!

As a 5 year old Italian kid in Chicago I figured out how to use my fathers record player. I must have played the 45 record about 5,000 times. As soon as I heard it again here on UA-cam I was magically brought back to my fathers basement kneeling in front of that record player.

This song still takes me to Luigi's house picturing Pepino running around half drunk, busting Lou's balls. Then the Italian parts remind me of Gram and Auntie reading the Franoi at the kitchen table. Every time they heard an Italian song they'd start clapping their hands like it was a reflex.

I doubt we'll ever again see a simple fun song bond parents and children as strongly and lovingly as this innocent classic did. And Lou was good enough to be signed to Sinatra's label, and roam the charts with the 4 Seasons AND the Beatles!!😃

When I was a kid in Staten Island, my Pop-Pop used to play the records when we visited . And this record was a favorite! All of us dancing in the living room, while Nanny was getting the spaghetti finished. Miss those days! P.S. I now have the record! 😘

So funny. I was a kid and all my aunts, and great Aunts were dancing around singing this one. Even Grandma was doing a Tarantella ! It sold a million copies in the NYC area alone. The "flip-side is also very funny. "What did Washington Say when he Crossed the Delaware?" Lou says it in Italian, and in English it translates to

YES! My grandma (and mom) also played & taught me this song when I was just a baby, played it on a 45!! What memories it brings back!! I played it for my mom, today, who is 90 and she was smiling and happy because she remembered all the times we played and sang along! (Flip side was "what did Washington say when he crossed the Delaware"). Great memories!! (just add pasta & vino!)
