My son was 15, and we were on a drive to take him to where he lived with his father and this song played. It reminded me then "that's life" and I so missed being a family.. we listened to Frank for hours, weeks on end my son currently is 18 now.. today I was in my room watching the joker and was so sad. Then my boy busted in as this song was playing and started dancing and singing to it and a smile came to me!!
Life gets better as he is living with me. It has its ups and downs but it never stays the same .... thanks frank for this beautiful memory of a time when "That's Life" was something I couldnt bare and now I can.

As depressing as this song was sounding to me, i actually listened to the lyrics more carefully and it gave me more determination, I was listening to it when I was feeling down but then the part "each time I find myself flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race" made me realise just how much determination I still have in me, and immediately got to my desk to continue doing my sketches again that I stopped doing as often, I don't listen to this when I'm sad anymore, I listen to it to become more determined

Is actually "sense" not "cents" .

    • @michaelaschneider-wettstei5313
      @michaelaschneider-wettstei5313 5 років тому +175

It‘s actually a quote from the movie. That is why the words are enclosed in quotation marks. Arthur Fleck writes „cents“ in his journal playing with the word because it is a homophone to „sense“, which indicates that he is making a joke. There is another ambiguity depicting his failure as comedian because he does not make money with his jokes, and cents are part of the US American currency. He does not make money (cents) while alive, but so many great artists earned a fortune after their death. Arthur also created an ad absurdum joke that is not funny, which shows that jokes are subject to cultural convention. Some death jokes are funny, but others are not. Death, and especially suicide, is one of the last taboos of „western“ societies.

    Lyrics:
That's life, that's what all the people say.
    You're riding high in April,
    Shot down in May
But I know I'm gonna change that tune,
When I'm back on top, back on top in June.
I said that's life, and as funny as it may seem
    Some people get their kicks,
    Stompin' on a dream
But I don't let it, let it get me down,
'Cause this fine ol' world it keeps spinning around
    I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
    A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
    And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself, flat on my face,
I pick myself up and get back in the race.
    That's life
    I tell ya, I can't deny it,
    I thought of quitting baby,
But my heart just ain't gonna buy it.
And if I didn't think it was worth one single try,
I'd jump right on a big bird and then I'd fly
    I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
    A poet, a pawn and a king.
I've been up and down and over and out
    And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself laying flat on my face,
I just pick myself up and get back in the race
    That's life
    That's life and I can't deny it
Many times I thought of cutting out
But my heart won't buy it
But if there's nothing shakin' come this here july
I'm gonna roll myself up in a big ball and die

Now that I've watched Joker, I'll never be able to listen this song without crying again. The contrast between its empowering message and Arthur's constant depression, and then the similarities between it and his new life as Joker are just too striking.
The movie was perfect in every aspect. Music and dance were fundamental, they made it way more emotionally powerful. Kudos to every single person who worked in it... And to Frank Sinatra, obviously!

@@joshuabruck9719 No, it's not weird to cry to about a fictional child being tied to a radiator and beaten up, because it happens all the time in real life. Some turn out fine, others turn into monsters themselves, like Joker. I would say your lack of empathy is weird, but it's not, it's really the default human behavior. I found this song at one of the most vulnerable moment of my life. Where i felt defeated and just couldn't see the end of it. With being pushed from all sides i was struggling to stand on my feet. To just be in control for one day of my life, one day. Left with a little bit of hope in my heart i kept trying. But, lately even that faint hope was beginning to fade away. The world around me turned dark and there was no light in sight at this tunnel of mine.
Music has always been my escape and some random browsing landed me on this song. I'd heard it previously, though i never really felt it. But this time, it hit me. It hit me hard and hit me deep.
I realized this is just May. I've still got half a year and half my life ahead of me. So now i just gotto get up, dust myself and get back in the race.
    Cause, that's life. 🙂

    I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate
    A poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out
    And I know one thing
Each time I find myself flat on my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race
    That's life (that's life) I tell ya, I can't deny it

I was 21 years old man, was madly in love with my ex..... found out she was was pregnant during the was seeing a couple guys behind my back and aborted the child. That night I was honestly as my lowest and was seriously debating on commiting suicide..... jumped in my truck and about 3 minutes into my drive this song plays...... after I told Loneliness and Depression to go fuck themselves.
Life can and will drag your face through the mud but as long as you learn your mistakes and grown stronger from them life cant do shit.
Life is a challenge and theres nothing more satisfying then conquering your goals n having full control of yourself.

Nobody, simply nobody sings this absolute gem of song quite like Sinatra. New York, New York. Come fly with me,My way -All great songs. Absolutely. Not considered by many to be his best. But for me it rocks. Grabs you first till last. The arrangement, his phrasing and delivery. He puts it all out there. The organ intro sets it up brilliantly. Take a bow maestro Frank.

What I love about Frank Sinatra and older music like this is that it actually has SOUL in it. I know I sound like a pretentious music douchebag, but the truth is I know nothing about music besides a few piano notes. In Music like this, especially with powerful leads like Frank Sinatra was that they knew how to sing and use tempo to make you FEEL something out of the song. Most music nowadays is just there to hypnotize you with a catchy beat, music like this wants you to feel the story they are singing along with them. Frank and his songs always make me feel actual emotions, like New York New York and a sense of optimism, That's Life with hope, human spirit and resilience, and possibly ironically foreshadowing depression, and My Way, giving you a sense of stubborn pride and accountability to the way you conduct yourself and the consequences for your actions as major events in your life come to a close. It's true what they say, there will never be another Frank Sinatra. Hopefully, when I go to Vegas this summer, I can catch a Frank Sinatra Impersonator show on the Strip.

you are absolutely right. there is no great artists left. but there will be some one day. the perfect storm came around in sinatras hayday with so much talent. music started being geared more for kids during the advent of rock though many great artists from the 50s to the 80s but they never attained the level of sophistication of Frank and other great ones of his day. today the music is infantile shallow and mostly souless. you're right on the money. to prove it all the las vegas niye club acts are all tribute artists cause nothing original and authentically hollywood glamour music is gone cause American society is dumbed down and the music is a reflection of life style, aspiration , dreams, hopes ect ect.

    lyrics
    [English and Japanese]
    0:18
    That's life (That’s life)
that's what all the people say
You're ridin' high in April, shot down in May
But I know I'm gonna change that tune
When I'm back on top, back on top in June
    0:43
    I said that's life (That’s life)
and as funny as it may seem
Some people get their kicks stompin' on a dream
But I don't let it, let it get me down
‘Cause this fine old world, it keeps spinnin' around
    1:09
    I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out and I know one thing
Each time I find myself flat on my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race
    1:36
    That's life (That’s life)
    I tell you I can't deny it
I thought of quitting, baby, but my heart just ain't gonna buy it
And if I didn't think it was worth one single try
I'd jump right on a big bird and then I'd fly
    2:01
    I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out and I know one thing
Each time I find myself laying flat on my face
I just pick myself up and get back in the race
    2:27
    That's life (That’s life)
    that's life and I can't deny it

Many times I thought of cuttin' out but my heart won't buy it
But if there's nothin' shakin' come this here July
I'm gonna roll myself up in a big ball and die
