Fogerty wasn't awarded the rights, he bought a majority stake in Concord and now has control over how they are used and can once again perform his own songs without legal hassles.
CCR was so big for a period of time, such great Classics. Congratulations to John Fogerty for his long court battle in winning the rights to His music!!
This song was actually penned in 1923, and the first recorded version came in 1934 courtesy of American folk/blues singer Lead Belly. CCR's version came out in 1969 (less than 3 months after I was born!).
yeah it's about a black man in prison and his wish to be out and free enough to ride the train. I wonder if it was inspiration for Folsom Prison Blues?
My very first concert in 1969 was CCR, Canned Heat, and Bo Diddley. After blowing a smokin' solo, John Fogerty threw his Harmonica into the crowd. I still have it! Love CCR!
My father blessed me with having this music in our home when I was a child. I grew to love CCR and still listen to them to this day. Well, on the night of his death my brothers and I reminisced about our dad, and we played nothing but CCR that night, and when this song came on my eyes moistened and all of us with sad knowing smiles seemingly all seemed to say," yes this is why dad loved this music it touches the soul'. It was a glorious way to say goodbye, together. Thank you for this reaction.
You guys were blessed to have a dad who played GOOD MUSIC. I am in India and we depended on the radio (Voice Of America being one of them) to listen to music and then run down to the record store to see if they had the records with the songs that we just heard.
My dad just passed on the 3rd of January, 2023. His ashes were put in the Vietnam Memorial in Hopkinsville, KY. I had his CCR 45s that he had in Vietnam. I have been a CCR fan since birth and I just turned 52. I have been lucky enough to see John Fogerty every decade since 1986. I haven't seen him the 20s yet.
The Midnight Special was actually a train that passed along by a prison in Sugar Land, Texas. The light refers to the beam from the engine car passing through the prison grounds. At least that's the story. Sugar Land is a city southwest of Houston.
Love this song, and the TV show "Midnight Special" was EPIC! I discovered Steve Martin, Journey, Dr. Hook, Peter Frampton, CCR, and the legendary Wolfman Jack!👏👏👏
The "Midnight Special" TV show started out as an election special to get young people out to vote. NBC didn't even realize they had much of an audience after midnight. Rating services didn't tally viewership between midnight and 6 AM. It was as a result of overwhelming viewer mail that the show became a weekly series. They also quickly filled the midnight spot, Monday to Thursday with "The Tomorrow Show", with Tom Snyder. It was the beginning of late night network television. Without these breakthrough shows, there would be no "Late Night" or any of it's competitors today.
My Daddy (who turned 77 today!) raised me on CCR. About 10 years ago I saw John Fogerty was having a concert a couple of hours away and got 2nd row tix for me and my Dad. Awesome concert, but my Dad isn't one to sing along or anything. Song #17 "Midnight Special"... Daddy was singing to that one! We ran into Fogerty at Disneyland a few months after we saw him at another concert years later and he talked with us for about 5 minutes or so. Quiet guy, but that made our day!
i was a fairly young kid (13?) when my Mom took me to this movie at a drive in... I was pretty freaked out by that scene and so yea this song stuck with me with that movie.
If you liked that rendition, check out "Heard It Through The Grapevine" (the LONG version). Talk about a jam session! Congrats on your Bengals win, Jay!
I just found you guys shortly and I'm so pleased to see a couple of younger people loving CCR, my all time favorite band. Midnight Special is my #2 (behind Proud Mary) Creedence track. I guess I'm about half way through the CCR videos and look forward to watching them all. If you want to hear yet another side of CCR check out Ramble Tamble from Cosmo's Factory. A blistering rocker; my only regret from Creedence is that they didn't cut loose like this one more often.
Congratulations on the Bengals win today! On to the Super Bowl! Always love Amber's reactions to songs - both her actual analysis and her grooving with the tunes!
There's a few great versions of this song and this is among the best. I first heard it by Harry Belafonte in 1962 when I was 14 years old and I loved it. Little did I know that the guy playing harmonica on the song would become one of my greatest music heroes a short time later, Bob Dylan!
add Simon & Garfunkle, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Steppinwulf, Five Man Electric Band and a few others and you're near defining my youth in the 1970s. That has to be the greatest decade of rock music in history(at least for Me)!
Actually, the first time I heard this song was 1983 when I was 10 and it was in the prologue scene from "Twilight Zone: The Movie". A scene starring Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks and directed by John Landis. I loved that film as a kid, even though that scene freaked me out back then. Always remember this song in it though. A classic!
If you watch the Movie, "Cool Hand Luke" from the mid-'60s, about a bunch of prisoners in a southern work prison, one of the inmates in the open bay barracks plays and sings this on a worn out acoustic guitar. It's an old traditional blues song.
my late daddy used to sing this around the house sometimes when I was a kid always hear his voice when I hear this song and this is my fav version of it
Hard to believe this song is so old, over a hundred years old. I'm only 65. I think of the movie Cool Hand Luke, with Paul Newman. Love all of CCR! Thanks again.
You seriously need to react to this CCR tune. "Long As I Can See the Light". It's a masterpiece, just like all the rest of their stuff. Ok, yeah. I'm a huge fan lol
John Fogerty grew up in El Cerrito California near Berkeley. He may have been drawn to music from the South, including blues and country but his roots were West coast. Many bands in the 60's and 70's didn't stick to one specific genre. Jerry Garcia played blue grass and Bob Dylan had a great album called Nashville Skyline.
One of my favorites. The Midnight Special was a great late night show as well and had great music from top bands performing live no lip lip-sinqing allowed
I'm a 68 year old man from Trenton, New Jersey and I think you guys are so cool. I was a hippie back in the day and I feel a kindred spirit with Amber and J you are really a great dude.
I have some good stories from when we lived in Trenton.. Very memorable, especially since I was so young and remember so much.. My mom's best friend was a black lady down the street, and her son was my older brother's best friend.. Ugh.. The stories...
Listening to this (and his other stuff) you would never know that he was born in Berkeley, California and grew up in El Cerrito (East (San Francisco) Bay Area, where I'm from!). As Amber says, he sounds like he's from the Bayou! Love the groove on this. Shout out to Lead Belly, who wrote and played this. This arrangement is awesome!
I remember watching The Midnight Special TV show back in the early-mid 70s - when I wasn't out carousing on a Friday night, that is. Of course, this was their theme song. As usual, CCR kills it. Cheers....
This has always been my favorite CCR song. I would listen to my mom's records on a record player as a small child and this one was played the most! Bad Moon Rising was my second favorite! Cotton Fields is a good one too!
Definitely my favorite CCR song!!! It’s featured prominently on the Twilight Zone movie…THAT is one flick y’all should check out. Such a badass movie & song 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
I was fortunate to attend three CCR concerts (1970, 1971, 1972.) at the Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, Tx., as a teen. They had everyone up, dancing and singing; this one, in particular. Doug Clifford's drumming, "bum, ba dum, bum ba dum" on "The Midnight Special" was like a call for everyone to jump up. John Fogerty (lead guitar and vocals), Tom Fogerty (underrated rhythm guitarist with a voice much like his younger brother's), and Stu Cook (excellent bass guitarist) set the house on fire. The Coliseum was situated on or near Buffalo Bayou, as I recall, and had a cavernous interior and echo chamber effect that carried the music outside to the streets--my parents who took us and came to pick us up from these concerts attested to that fact. The location made it extra special when they launched into "Born On The Bayou". Houston is known as "The Bayou City".
Saw John Forgerty in concert a few years ago. One of the best concerts I have ever gone to. The audience sang along to all of his song. His son played with him too.
Jay and Amber, growing up in the 50s and 60s afforded me the opportunity to hear music like this my whole life. I love your responses but particularly Amber's way to totally feel the music....way to go
From the second it starts "Well you wake up in the morning" I get chills this was played at my Aunty's funeral stirs up so many emotions we all loved CCR in our family and this was one of her favs 🥺❤️
My mom even loved listening to my CCR albums. My sister and I even got her doing the hand jive to Down The Corner. Then my daughter and I continued it when she was ready to learn great music.
Keep On Chooglin’ (live version) will blow your socks off, and you’ll find out what Chooglin’ is. Also, you should really check out his post-CCR stuff. Some of his absolute best work. Rambunctious Boy and Hot Rod Heart just to name two but not a bad song in his solo work at all. My favorite artist hands down and even more amazing live.
Love this song. Reminds me of the parties my parents used to throw with their friends. All of us kids would sing along with the adults to these old classics. Still brings back great memories.
I hear John Fogerty just was finally awarded rights to all his music! Deserved.
FINALLY!!!
@@uncledavesbrigade7106 Right!? wow

Long, long overdue

@MrsKelly S'why I'm here. Well, that plus I love these two. They're so much fun.
yeah it's about a black man in prison and his wish to be out and free enough to ride the train. I wonder if it was inspiration for Folsom Prison Blues?
Lead belly has so many great songs!
_the midnight special tv show_
The song was done by the actor Harry Dean Stanton in the classic prison film "Cool Hand Luke" in 1967 so I wonder if that inspired CCR to cover it.
My very first concert in 1969 was CCR, Canned Heat, and Bo Diddley. After blowing a smokin' solo, John Fogerty threw his Harmonica into the crowd. I still have it! Love CCR!
That must have been amazing!!
What a great memory 😊
Wow
My first concert was CCR as well with Booker T & the MGs and Wilbur Harrison (Kansas City, Let's Work Together which Canned Heat covered).
Oh wow. That sounds incredible !! ❤

if the light shone on you, you were the next one out the door?
This is also a jail break song. To take the Midnight Special was to bust out of the prison, go over the wall or thru the wire and escape.
Did that light from the train shine into a room where they held prisoners who were about to be released?
Just about every train line in the country that had a train running around midnight was called "the midnight special".
You had to get on that midnight train to go down to the Huntsville prisonYep the songs about a wife going to get her man p
