Great review. Just found your channel, and this was the first video I watched. Keep up the good work. For similar tests like this, or whenever you are putting in timing information, speed tests, etc., you should really utilize your video editing software to help you nail down the exact timing. Most of the video editors have a "stopwatch" feature that you can sync to the frames of the video to get e more accurate timing result. Some even have the stopwatch widget to place into the edited video as an overlay. Then you won't need to have the other stopwatch app and the delayed reaction times built into your conclusions. Hopefully, you find that info constructive and helpful.
Thanks for the tip. Yes, I test these numerous times in advance too and I figure I'm about a half second late on the timer press but a half second late when stopping it. So it should be within a second for sure. In any case I'll look into that and I hope you can sub to the channel. I do quite a bit of Mac stuff but also do a number of SSDs, Hubs, Enclosures for all computers.
With Samsung 990 Pro 4TB and M1 Max Macbook Pro i'm getting over 3200 write and 3100 read. So glad I saw your video on it, very happy with the two I bought. They stay cool even under heavy load too and no thermal throttling. Those Germans know engineering!
@@Mr.Zen_73 on a laptop windows 11. I have aData XPG runs on Orico 10GBps, it happens every now and then, same thing, but removing the ssd out of the enclosure and inserting it back usually solved the issue and then it came back again. It just with this Graugear wont work at all
My Graugear arrived last week and i'm very happy with it, so much so I've bought a second one. On my M1 Max Macbook Pro I get 3110 write and read 3050 using a Crucial T500 2Tb. I'll be using my 2nd one with a 4Tb Samsung 990 Pro and will post the speeds when it arrives.
Great review, There are user complaints about this class of enclosures heating up and dropping the connection after being used for many hours. it would be really informative to see the temperature of this (and other 40GB enclosures) after being connected and used for 24 hours, and were there any dropouts.
Your videos are awesome!! I’m just now experimenting with building external ssd. I’d like to put the Samsung 990 pro. I’m brand new to this so I’m thinking it will work. There’s software with the Samsung. Will it still work with my MacBook? Thank you so much for your videos!!
If you plan on moving the data between macOS and Windows exFAT is the best formatting option because both platforms can read/write to it. If that isn't an issue then apfs, as noted by @cnemelue, is your best bet.
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, like they said you want to format it (that will erase your data) for APFS on a Mac or Exfat if using between Mac or Win PC. But any M.2 Gen 4 Drive should work if formatted correctly.
Good review! I'm wondering if you could also review on OWC's ministack STX as well? I've been debating about purchasing that because it got both HDD bay and NVME slot and expansion of Thudnerbolt 4 (three TB4 ports) in one device.
I have not tested that one yet but overall this one has some nice features for sure. I might test that in the future and will be testing another fan based enclosure (not Acasis) in about a month.
thanks for your review. Just bought one, but then wanted to check it will take a 4tb nvme ssd? I think it should, but I can't find any info confirming it 100%? Also just out of interest what Mac are you using M1, M2, M3?
I think it should be fine with the 4 TB drive. I'm not 100% sure but all the recent ones I tested had that capability. I just don't have an extra 4 TB drive to test with now. Thanks for watching.
Just got mine, put in it a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB and the maximum write speed I can get (connected to Mac Mini M2Pro) is about 920, isn’t that bad luck? I think I will return it and probably het the Acasis or Satechi.
I am going to get my first SSD Enclosure. I decided to go with the Samsung PRO 980 2TB for travelling with my Macbook Pro M3 - Which Enclosure do you recommend? I tried to get the Satachi but they're out of stock. Would you suggest this one or Orico, Acasis. Please help! Thank you
I like the last one I did by Graugear but I only tested with the SN770 on that. All the others are going to be about the same as far as features and speed. I did videos on all of them.
Have you tested it out to see if you can run apps/files straight from the external storage and see if the performance remains the same even after longer periods of time being used?

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, the Gruagear works very well and I have been using mine now for many months without issues.
It fast it cools, but Samsung Magician wont recognized my Samsung SSD 990 Pro connected through this enclosure.
@@erw1nk779 you on a mac or pc?

I have not had that issue but I use it in shorter bursts. I just do product showcases also to show people what is out there. Thanks for watching.
Craig Neidel Thank you very much!
Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the info. Nice product, but it's a bit bulky to carry around. If you're using it at home or at work, it will be fine.
It's bulky but that is the reason I think it cools very good also.

It’ll work as long as you format to apfs on Mac.

Thanks for the review. That enclosure has a lot of nice features, but it's a bit too spendy for me.
I would look for a sale as these always go on sale.

@@craigneidel My pleasure! Appreciate what you do to help us to make informed decision! :)
Thank you.
Thx Craig for reviewing it; personally I don’t like the looks of it and would opt for the Acasis TBU405PRO also fan cooled

It didn't say. Maybe email manufacturer or post on Amazon questions. I only tested up to 2tb.

I have not tested too much of that except I edited a video off that drive and it worked fine and was very fast. Thank you.
How does it compare to the acasis ( fan model) in terms of temperature rise?
I have not tested the Acasis with fan.
Does the fan run full time or does it turn on when it needs to?
Appears to run full time but it's super quiet and you don't hear it.
Oh I forgot to ask but does it come with the cable?
Yes it does. Thunderbolt 4
What chip is this enclosure using?
ASM2464PD
Yes, thank you - ASM2464PD
