This video got me a job, between few bartenders that went to an interview the same day. People don’t realize than knowing the basics will give you and advantage.
Incredible depth of information, loved this deep dive into such wonderful products! Such an insightful point about Antica being the counterpart to Martini Rosso, had never thought of it like that but it's a genius level comparison!
"Keep trying it" is great advice. Bitter flavors can be off putting at first. I tried my first Negroni in Italy and didnt like it. The second was on a cruise and didnt seem as bad. Third was by my nephew at his home bar, and tasted better. After the fourth it is now my favorite, bourbon old fashioned is now number 2
I am a huge Negroni fan, I enjoy preparing them for people and it's often like that, it takes time for them to appreciate them. But once you're hooked, it becomes an obsession and you end up with a huge collection of bitters, gins and vermouths....
Me too. I love it so much I almost wish it wasn’t alcoholic, then I could drink it morning, noon and night. We’re the odd ones out tho, even my most cultured friends are like, ‘Ver-what?!’ I’ll suggest they watch this video, it’s an excellent.
Thanks for this analyses. Martini & Rossi Rosso is my favoriete vermouth for years. You're analyses of vermouth is the best i can find on UA-cam. Through you're analyses i got my first vermouth of a higher class/ brand. Ordered the Cocchi Vermouth di Torro. My man. What an explosion of taste of different spices and long and wonderful aftertaste. Exactly as you analysed. Cocchi Vermouth di Torro is really to enjoy and will be very special for me. Manny manny thanks.
What an excellent lesson. I love Dolin. It has such a unique flavor. I enjoy it all by itself. But I can see how some won’t like it. Very unusual. Carpano takes the trophy though. It has the richest, most beautiful taste. It makes all mixed drinks amazing. Great!
I honestly think Spanish Vermouth could be its own category (and video) as you note. I love Gonzalez-Byass so much. There's a ton of regional variation too.
Nicely done video. What do you think of Foro Rosso Sweet Vermouth? We don't have a wide selection here but Foro seems to be one of the higher shelf options.
Great information, thank you. As one commenter said earlier my entrance into Vermouth was with Martini & Rossi Rosso. I wasn’t a big fan of it maybe just my palette but I get big oregano notes from it. Carpano Antica was my next and that one I fell in love with.
Awesome video! My favorite so far is Foro which is very similar to Cocchi, but much cheaper. Martini is my least favorite by far and tastes like an old pizza parlor to me lol. Too much oregano. I would love a video about the "Chinato Vermouth" style, such as Punt e Mes and Cocchi's Dopo Teatro and why they are really not the same as "sweet vermouth." Naturally, that would lead to a good discussion of Chinato, like Cocchi's Barolo Chinato and others.
Nice video, Carpano is my winner....even though I use sweet vermouth predominantly in cocktails (mainly negroni), Cocci di Torino looks similar to Carpano but it is heavier for my taste in the vanilla, but still very very good (had to reduce "my standard quantity" when used it in cocktails). Just bought Cinzano - still to open it - and I must also try the 1757 and the Dollin. The Trincheri sounded very very interesting, as I am towards the bitter tastes. Nice video.
@@MasterYourGlass Only issue is fridge space. My bar is freestanding (a repurposed cabinet, though big at almost an arm span across), might have to figure out if it's possible to get a quiet wine fridge in that area in a way that is attractive-the price per bottle will look less great with a dedicated fridge added ;)
@@MasterYourGlass Home bar, it's become maybe a more serious hobby. A bunch of friends have become more interested in spirits, cocktails, etc. More time at home played a role here ;)
Can I use the basic cinzano vermouth Rosso for a Negroni? I didn’t look exactly on the recipe and didn’t see the SWEET vermouth so I bought the basic one
In my humble opinion the Cinzano 1757 is the best for the Negroni. It allows the gin and Campari to showcase their flavors without trying to cover them. Thanks for watching.
As a Canadian, I lament the difficulty in finding more variety in vermouths. Happily, I am able to make some nice ones on my own. Unfortunately, I have not been able to make anything that reasonably resembles Martini, Carpano, Cinzano, etc.
Well that’s too bad. It’s such an important ingredient and you would think that there would be more variety available for you. To be honest with you we were in the same situation in the United States just a handful of years ago so perhaps you can look forward to more options coming your way soon
Totally agree - limited selection in so many categories in Western Canada. Smaller population, maybe? California has bigger population than our entire country!
Interesting, I first tried the martini and rossi, then went from that to carpano. After many manhattans, and watching this video. I think I would like something in between the two. I find the carpano a little too bitter, I don't remember why, but I didn't like the martini and rossi
I love it. Definitely try something towards the middle to see how you like that intensity. There are bartenders That will mix two vermouth together to take advantage of the qualities of both styles and I have not tried that experiment yet but if you still have both bottles at home maybe try your next Manhattan with a blend of both and see how that goes as well. Thanks for commenting!
I get something completely different from Marini & Rossi. It tastes like a mouth full of sugar and oregano or poultry seasoning to me. Not at all pleasant.
I watched this twice Livio. There is a ton of great information in this video. Well done.
Thanks David. With such a rich history here I tried to give some info without making the video too long. I appreciate you watching it twice!

Criminally underrated channel

Now I need to experiment with the vermouth! (And maybe the gin)
Great story. The 4th Negroni is irresistible!
That might be fun to do to see if you find a version you like better.

So helpful and informative. Sweet vermouth is a very complicated and complex product. Thank you for the demo. Saves me a lot of expense and tasting!

So funny I just tried Foro rosse for the first time last week. I like it! It’s a tasty vermouth that isn’t overpowering.
Great stuff. Good to know that there are still plenty of vermouths out there that I have not seen.

Which one is good with Negroni
In my humble opinion the Cinzano 1757 is the best for the Negroni. It allows the gin and Campari to showcase their flavors without trying to cover them. Thanks for watching.
what about the grand marnier 150 cent cinquantenaire?, i can't find it any longer... my fav
Unfortunately Grand Marnier discontinued it. Thanks for watching!
Which is the best for Negroni cocktails?
In my opinion something simple like Cinzano is best because it does not try to take over the flavors of the Campari and the Gin.
Great job Livio!! Well done
