I really really think we took Obama's professionalism and thoughtfulness for granted. Even if his vision of compromise turned out to be out of reach, he really acted the part of a global leader.

This happens because we think the world is a magical place that gets better without we taking personal responsability. Would YOU do what is necessary to be a president? The problem is we want the world to be great, without us participating in the change.
Thats why we tolerate bad leaders - cause it takes personal responsability to participate in solving the problems. We don't want that, so we root for the "good" leaders, thinking that by itself absolves us from facing the sh*show that is our world. Good leaders are normal people like you and me.

That's not what he was saying at all. He said nothing about internal conflicts. He is referring to external threats. Being willing to fight and make sacrifices to stop dictatorships like Russia, such as enduring higher prices on goods like gasoline as a result of the sanctions. He references Europe because countries like Germany actually increased trade with Russia after the annexation of Crimea. They were not willing to make any sacrifices at all to defend democracy.

And yes, the democracies did get flabby, they thought they could sit back, rest on their laurels and enjoy the fruits of work done by other generations of people without having to look after it themselves. He is however a deeper thinker than most of the recent presidents and seems to have a longer view than most. His most accurate state,ent here is that there has been a kind of reversion back into the old ways of thinking politically and globally. He is right. Again. And it has come exactly at the time we need to be thinking and acting quite differently.
I do miss President Obama so much. What an admirable, fine individual he is - always thought so. One does not need to be partisan to admit this.

When this man answers a question, you can hear how he is working it out in his mind, drawing on evidence and experiences, and reaching his conclusions. Sometimes he struggles, but as a listener you may then agree or disagree based on his line of thought. For Trump, you hear emotions-if you blur all the words and leave only his rhythm and pitches, you can still know what his answer is. For Biden, you hear only prepared talking points, and you know exactly where he deviates from those points, which will be corrected by some civil servants a few hours later.

I live in Germany and travelled to the US in 2014, and my US relations were all much more worried about the Ukraine situation than I was. I hate to admit it, but we Germans were blind and stupid at the time regarding Russias action in Ukraine. Also I remember being very much focused on Syria and the ISIS situation in 2014, because we had a lot of Syrian refugees to take care of in our town. I guess most Humans can only handly a limited number of crises at a time, and Ukraine was too much for me.

Years ago when I started noticing the rise of nationalisms in various countries, all I could think about was that nazizm was once a popular world view in many countries, not just Germany. Nobody ever voted for concentration camps or a war that consumed lives of millions. People voted for the feeling of superiority over others that nazizm offered. Just the way our contemporary nationalisms do. Look for what's beneath the words. When someone is telling you that one particular group of people is evil and wants to destroy "you", ask yourself who is "them" and who is "us" - how do you define it? Just by the fact of having been born in one place or another?
When you listen to them talking about making America/Britain/France/anything else great again, ask yourself what do you feel? Do you start feeling superior to someone? See the red light flashing like crazy?

When Obama first got elected, I thought it was the beginning of a new era of optimism and human dignity around the world. You can see the quote from Thomas Jefferson swirling around in his thoughts, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." He very nearly says the words a few times and certainly drives the same message home, that if democracy and freedom aren't fought for, they will erode.

@@RobertMJohnson I'm not sure of any such mocking going on (citation needed) but even if Obama had, I don't see what that would change. Europe lacked the will to stand against Russia at the time, the cheap energy imports led to Europeans putting money over ethics so they turned a blind eye. And as much as I support Ukraine, them losing this war wouldn't be any kind of threat to us. We could simply turn a blind eye to this war as Europe did in 2014 and the world would keep on turning. Not that I advocate for such apathy, but it underlines the point that Russia isn't a threat, it is an annoyance to us. The US has always cared about Ukrainian suffering and the threat to Ukraine's democracy, not ours.
