Daizan’s 60th birthday trip to the Buddha’s pilgrimage sites in India - Arrival at Bodh Gaya

Daizan has arrived after a long journey to Bodh Gaya and the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in the Indian state of Bihar. The the Mahabodhi Temple is considered to be the holiest site in Buddhism. And is where the Buddha first attained enlightenment.
In the Buddha's time it was known as Uruvela, it is situated by the bank of the Lilajan River (Sanskrit: Nirañjanā River). Siddhārtha lived here on the banks of the river for six years practising strict asceticism, before realising that it wasn’t leading him to the truth he longed for. He decided to accept a bowl of milk-rice from the milkmaid Sujātā, bathed in the river and recuperated. He then sat under a nearby pippala tree and, after a night of intense meditation, finally achieved Enlightenment. This tree became known as the Bodhi Tree, and the site became known as Bodh Gayā.
