Good to see this bought up. I'm Maori, but whenever it is bought up in NZ, some try to deny. Yeah it was done by two particular displaced Iwi (tribes) and not Maori as a whole. But to me? to genocide a small island of Pacifists isn't a cultural thing, its just evil.
Then again, its easy for me to condemn something from the past behind a screen. My ancestors ate each other as the ultimate insult to their enemy what was seen as the norm back then.

You must not be from the North Island. It's a subject often brought up for different reasons. A lot of people know about the genocide, they just don't know the exact details. Which those details are carefully recorded by the crew of the Rodney, a whaling vessel that was seized and surrounded by about 50 Waka.
"My ancestors ate each other as the ultimate insult to their enemy what was seen as the norm back then."
It wasn't normal. There's a reason it was heavily Tapu to received a Kaitangata blessing. Many thousands were killed and many eaten throughout the duration of the Musket Wars. Before that it wasn't very common, and halfway through the musket war, about 1830 or so, it largely faded out of favor among the Warriors. Most famously with Nene and Patuone.

When I say norm back then I’m talking about my OWN background. Also meaning for people not to see it from our own modern views or overthink it. Yes some Iwi forbade it, others didn’t. Death was and still is a very tapu topic.

In the account that I read of this, the Moriori met and decided to offer the Maori a portion of the island as a way of maintaining peace and coexisting. The Maori used the fact that the Moriori were gathered together in one place to make that offer to the Maori to launch a surprise attack. Then, the Maori proceeded to kill the Moriori men, cook them and eat them.

    • @makoent2231
      @makoent2231 8 днів тому +4

Close. You're highlighting two different accounts.
The Moriori elders in 1835 believed that they should have let the Maori keep the land that they stole, as they ceased their actions of violence for a few days and appeared wary.
The Maori stumbled upon the meeting and misinterpreted the meeting as a War Party, and took action the next day.
The second part of offering the land came in 1870, when a petition to the New Zealand Government was made to reclaim some of their last land, and the descendants of the Maori Iwi were claiming 'Conquerors Rights'. The response years later was that the Moriori would receive 2.3% of the land back, and the Maori keep 97.3%. By which point in 1870, there were only 101 Moriori left.
" The Moriori failed to gain any title on Pitt or the outlying islands, which
were part of their traditional food sources. The judge had chosen to base his decisions on Māori rather
than Moriori customary law, and to recognise their right of ownership by conquest. Moriori believed
that they held on to the mana of the land by adhering to their ancient laws of peaceful occupation."
The Invasion itself took the lives of 108 women and 118 men. Their names are listed in the manuscripts by Hirawanu Tapu, a survivor the genocide who had documented their entire history, culture, language, and the events of the genocide up to the refusal of the Government to act or recognize their people.
1,336 died from abuse, disease, and despair while they were enslaved between 1835 to 1870.

They could have read parts of the journal from the whaling ship, the Lord Rodney. The journal actually offers such an interesting perspective into their situation and the crews opinions of what was happening. Even though the ship was seized, the Maori Chieftains paid for the service, and gave the crew food from the stores that the Maori brought.

From the outset you have a photo of our tuupuna Tamati Waka Nene in the introduction, then other Rangatira who had nothing to do with this - even got a cheek to put a photo of Kiingi Taawhiao on your video. Rubbish video that doesn't even match the half pai koorero!!

Lol shut up, it doesn’t have to have pictures of Maori related to the incident if that’s all he had he would run out of images, it’s all about giving people an idea of the look of people during those times.
Your just grasping at straws to find any point in time where you can show off that you have knowledge, and let me tell you know one cares about what you know.
The information in the video was the most accurate I’ve seen from a lot of people and so this should be praised as a Maori myself and growing up with Māoris who have wanted their culture shed light on this is the way for it to go.
But people like you who have a superiority complex love beating people down for showcasing what they have learnt for minor mistakes when really we should encourage more people to learn about our culture.

Nothing to do with it. It is more the human nature of war and geopolitics. And it is primal. Chimps go to war for resources and territory, negotiate with other groups of chimps, have alliances and trade.

They're not Forgotten. They're still an active community in both New Zealand and Chathams.
I'm curious about the sources you cited for your information.
The only first person account of these events regarding the invasion of Chathams Islands, is in the journal of Mr Shand, from the Whaling Brig, 'The Rodney'. There's a lot of information left out in that regard, and false information regarding the health of the passengers, as well as how they seized the brig.
