    Here's a fun challenge.
    Brilliant moments in otherwise not-so-great films.
    Even some of the worst films manage to convey something every now and again.

      Exactly, like that scream in Troll 2. Cameraman brilliantly captures the fright while cropping that freaking fly out of the shot.

      Try film ''The Aviator'' as well if you want to witness a true story, DiCaprio and directing by Scorsese.
      Very underrated ( ok, ok... it's overlooked, happy now? :D ), never seen anybody mention it besides Cinefix in a video about use of colour and in a video where they mentioned how the film didn't deserve an Oscar.

    • @ParagonKevin
      @ParagonKevin 7 років тому +14

      The Aviator is a Scorsese film starring DiCaprio with an 87% on RT and grossed $213.7 million at the box office. "Very underrated"? I think not.

  • @mattallen7566

    In Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige", there's a great moment where Christian Bale unveils his new secret magic trick, but we don't see the ending. We just see Michael Caine's and Hugh Jackman's reactions to it. It's beyond brilliant how it builds curiosity, excitement and tension. We NEED to see this trick. We have to figure out how it works. Which relates to the whole theme of the film, which is that finding out the truth will be disappointing and heartbreaking and will cost us everything.

      I agree! That shot seriously gave me the chills first time I saw it! Because of the setup, the sound effects that are played over the close up on Hugh Jackman's face and then his expression, we have everything we need in order to know exactly what just went down. A lesser film maker would have just shown it and spoon fed the audience.

    • @ParagonKevin
      @ParagonKevin 7 років тому +58

      Catch Me If You Can and Room are very highly rated. Underrated isn't the same as not being popular.

    • @vincenthunter1615
      @vincenthunter1615 7 років тому +10

      Underrated means to be not as popular as they should be and by that definition those films do fit the sense of the word. Sure its more popular than Everest but catch me if you can is by far some of Di Caprio and Hanks least known work and room fits as a cult film as it is loved by film buffs but it not nearly known as much by the general public.

    Everest was such a great movie, with its use of CGI (nearly all mountain shots and a bunch of basecamp as well), its use of sound and music (incredibly loud and chaotic on the mountain to cut to almost complete silence the moment after), its use of negative space (showing things that AREN'T there are as important as things that ARE) and… the acting, off the roof from everyone involved.

    I don't know if you do requests, and even if you do the if the comment section is the wrong place to request it, but I have an idea for a video about the Top (Whatever number suits you) Genre Defying Movies. Not only would it be fascinating to see some movies so original that they can't be pinned down into an easy category, but also all the different ways that a film can shed convention down to the bone marrow.
    I'd be really stoked to see this and I bet a lot of others would too!

    CMIYC: Did anyone else notice how DiCaprio's character "disappears" at 2:15, just after someone walked by in the foreground then stays "gone" as Hanks moves his head towards the left and then you barely "catch" DiCaprio again? That was a subtle but brilliant piece of cinematography.

    I love your brilliant sound editing. You utilize odd edits and breaks, even uneven tempo and pitch to create a distinctive sound and to direct the viewer's attention. It's similar to the accidental sound editing from A Charlie Brown Christmas Special that is so iconic and was never duplicated in the latter specials. You've made a gutsy choice of deliberately utilizing what most sound editors would call "mistakes" in order to create something as iconic and artistic as the films you talk about. Bravo.

    Glad to see ‘Catch Me If You Can’ getting some recognition. It’s not perfect by any means, but it has some damn great scenes and is entertaining as hell.

    You really need to add the scene towards the end of Someone In The Crowd song in La La Land, where Mia comes out of the restroom, and while she walks, the dancers just synchronize their hand movements in a way that they are making way for her entry...Beautifully shot, probably some of the best cinematography ever and the score which accompanied it and the adrenaline rush that followed with the lyrics after it, the scene was pure artistry and magic...

    SUGGESTION: If you ever give a spoiler warning with the option to skip ahead, incorporate the time to skip to. I really enjoyed this video and just subscribed because of how well put together the editing and analylsis were. Was anticipating the time because I have seen lesser Channels make use of it. Great video

    I went and watched Bad Lieutenant because of this and it was hilarious. I thought that was a dream sequence because it was all just so convenient. The fact that it actually happened - Love it!

    When you said Room, had a mild panic attack and wondered which scene you could be talking about - the football throwing scene, the breast cancer scene(s) but the relief when I realised there was no 'The' - whew! Also, can you guys serious-analyse The Room, would be such fun!

    These are all great observational moments that we recognize upon further study. What about the ones you always see coming, but are still caught off guard...like when you notice the camera focusing on one person inside a car and out their window. It ALWAYS ends with that side of the car getting t-boned.

    Bad Lieutenant PoC NO is such a great movie, Herzeg and Cage both at their most bizarre and entertaining while exploring deep themes of guilt and sliding down a slippery slope. I'll never get tired of that movie

    Another excellent video. What's even more excellent, is how the Cinefix style inspired my ZOOM elementary students to make videos about filmmaking in this type format.

    I've just spent the night binging your videos and have to say that the thoughtfulness, knowledge, and was of delivery that you guys put into your videos is a true joy to consume. I genuinely appreciate that your analyses of these films run the full spectrum of human emotion, which is refreshing considering that it is easy to straight for the edgy content of film and forego the wonderfully splendid and touching moments the medium of film has given us. One thing that I have noticed in your film critiques however is a lack of brilliant moments from what are typically called kids or family movies. You've briefly mentioned a few in previous videos (the waltz in Sound of Music for example), but I believe that are more than a few moments of brilliance in many of these films that make them worth watching, and such a video may even inspire some young people to appreciate how good films are crafted.and if you can fit in a top five parent/child connections video, that'd probably force a few sentimental folks like me to choke up. And now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go have a catch with my old man.cheers
