- Ancient Greek bows were simply made out of animal horn and sinew. Modern bows are made of a synthetic material that’s lighter and stronger, and armed with laser scopes. Today, two of Greece’s best archers are testing their modern bows against the type of bow that Odysseus would have used.

His bow fires as fast as a bullet? Yeah... if it had a multistage rocket behind it. Arrow speeds are in the hundreds of feet per second area. Bullets go up in the the thousands.

I registered 308 per second on arrow speed of the compound, a long way from bullet speed. The recurve dude should switch to Osage orange wood for the best made recurves.
@@davemeeks8109 Yep, even the fastest compounds "just" touch 400 fps with ultralight non-hunting arrows...still a solid 2/3 slower than almost any bullet.
If they were faster than a bullet the arrows would be making sonic booms!
Trojan War took place either between 1800 - 1600 bc or 1400 - 1200 bc. The ancient bow should be made using technology of 3000 to 4000 years ago and not 2000 years as one of the competitors mentioned. The bow of Odysseas (Ulysees) was quite special. Homer describes that only Odysseas could string it (bend the bow to fix the string) and use it properly. The suitors could not string it except one if I remember well and he could pass the arrow towards the target. More than that composite bows were compact and suitable for fighting and hunting, something a modern bow for athletic competition cannot match. Probably they should put both bows to Penelope's test which was "the man who can string Odysseus' bow and shoot an arrow through twelve ax handle sockets". Now even with Homer's era technology, 8th century bc, such a composite bow is extremely impressive.

That bow is probably not even hitting over 340 fps unless he has modified limbs and full 80 pound pull. Dude has a kitted out matthews bow with a uncommon sight and a thumb release and doesn't know how fast his arrow is going ?!?!??! Da fuq I know he has shot through a chrono

What a total BS test! Why don't you do one with a bow of the same draw weight that was used in war bows? Even though the one was made using the same materials and techniques, I can guarantee you that it was NOT EVEN CLOSE to what was used at the time!
It's like 30-06 rifle going up against a Flintlock long rifle this was not far at all. It was accuracy through volume not power through accuracy put enough arrows in the air and you can't miss.😕

Greek bows were of Scythian style, since they were often employed but the Greeks as bowmen. Turks wouldn't arrive in the region until the 10-11 century AD.

@@artiz32000 Well it depends on what you identify as a Turk. Turcic tribes first arrived in Anatolia and Syria in the 11th century, coming for the steppes of modern day Turkestan . The first wave were the Seljuk Turks and had Asian/Mongolian characteristics. You can see that in paintinga and pictures from that eras turcic leaders. If by Turk, you identify the modern day average citizen of Turkey , then the sort answer is yes, the long answer just, it's complicated. Modern day Turks are a mix of Greek, Armenian, Arabian, and Turcic blood.Dint forget that the Seljuks and later the ottoman were the ruling elite, not the majority of their sultanate/empire. For example, the majority of the Mehmet army during the siege of Constantine/Instanbul were Greek speaking Anatolians. By this standar, modern day Turks are descendants of original indigenous Anatolians with some Turkic blood. That's why modern Turks of Izmir and west turkey look a lot more like Europeans than other turcic tribes.
@@konstantinosnikolaou6739 nope. they were there from the beginning. they just did not adopt the name turk. they live in somewhat lose confederations since there is enough room in the north. they were trades and movers of the goods from china to Europe. they domesticated horses. even summerian are closely related with turks.. so today what we called turks are dominating force in almost all asia. what you have bee thought mostly balony

None of the people from the past who actually needed these specific bow models to survive in that day, dont live anymore. Expect these civilisations to make their bows, with competition in mind, and that their lives depend on it, the quality effectiveness etc. Today, only natives actually still uses the bow for survival, and im pretty sure the medieval longbow men, mongols, and koreans out performed these natives by a large margin. Better knowledge materials, quality and performance through the ages. Theres none that craft bows realistic with how it performed in the past, we only have impressions of how it was. These people back in the days, were more muscled, trained and selected for this, with much heavier bow pulls on the strings. Most reproductions probably wont fire as effectively as the ones in originally used in practice.
Terrible terrible experiment!! FYI arrows only go about 320fps and bullets travel depending on all sorts of things but thousands of FPS!! Again terrible info and demo!!
