Inside Athens Trireme 480 B.C. 🇬🇷

  • ■ ATHENS, GREECE: The most advanced weapon of the ancient world was the Trireme. It was these ships that helped the Greek city states, with Athens bringing the greatest number of ships to the table, to defeat Xerxes' Persian invasion fleet. Now these original ships, being 2500 years by now, are naturally long gone along with any blueprints or sketches of their exact construction.
What has however survived are written descriptions as well as stone carvings, one on the Parthenon itself, which Greece used to build a modern life-sized replica which is now open to visitors who wish to see this technological masterpiece of shipbuilding firsthand with their own eyes.

    ■ I would like to thank all the awesome people of Greece who have been doing their utmost to help me, not just with suggestions, but to meet and show me in person where to make these videos so they can be as unique and interesting as possible. Outside of India and Sri Lanka, this is the most help I've gotten from locals with everything. THANK YOU 🇬🇷

As a Scotsman living on the Greek island of Rhodes, I can say that Greece is an incredible country with a truly fantastic history. Ancient Greece was full of incredible inventions, innovations and was light years ahead of practically everyone else. Now, when I walk down to the shore of the Aegean Sea near my house, I love to think about all the incredible times that have passed. No wonder Greece is the cradle of western civilisation.

As a member of the greek navy and one of its two naval schools I have seen this ship get moving and going outside the bay. Two years ago, twice a week we took the students of Greece’s two naval schools (men and women about 20 years old) from their quarters to the place you just saw, put them inside the seats that Harald showed you and got the ship moving. The reason was to get footage for a video to be shown on TV. Don’t get fooled by appearances, this ship can move really fast. And by the way the «πηδαλιούχος» (the controller that takes the central seat) doesn’t have to be strong. I remember the commander always using the same girl to control the ship as she could quickly interpret his commands and turn the ship at will.

Magnificent video, thank you a lot for making us, who'll probably never be on board, experience this!
On a side note, the Romans also generally didn't use slaves to row their galleys, but trained free people. There are exceptions in times of urgency, but the Romans would often free the slaves before putting them on an oar, since it was difficult to have a functional warship with unmotivated slaves.
Most historians believe that the cadence of rowing wasn't given with drums like in the movies but with flutes, if I recall right.
Only in the late medieval and Renaissance period did the practice of using condemned people on galleys become common. This was facilitated by using less numerous but much bigger oars, on which several people where rowing, this made the errors of a single rower less significant for the entire ship.

I use to live in a ocean side community here in the states in the Pacific Northwest and every year we would have a bunch of really old ships and replicas come into the bay. The were refereed to as " Tall ships" so schooners, old warships, etc with the huge masts and some had cannons they would shoot off.
Definitely a awesome video seeing a replica Trireme. Those guys were up close and personal. I would absolutely love to see something like that in person.
