On the format, yes it is very informative and delivers the key points - excellent stuff Ray. I think most folks who come here probably already have some soldering experience. In the spirit of not excluding anyone though, PACE has some absolutely excellent (vintage) videos on UA-cam on a range of topics related to printed circuit boards, reworking them, repairing them, on soldering and lots more. I highly recommend that series.
The new format is spot on sir. Guess it is a sign of the times when so many of us now need Optivisors for close up work. Nice catch on the thermal stress around the cement resistors as well, seems more and more I am seeing this as well. If you come across a cold solder joint as time progresses might want to include a picture of what to look for during restoration.
I like the new format. I personally don’t want to watch someone spend 30 minutes unscrewing/unsoldering components unless it is an essential part of the trouble shooting process. Bottom line, don’t waste my time doing the obvious. Keep up the good work!
Right? It's like watching paint dry, without the excitement. :) I never thought a rebuild video would be of interest, but I think folks are interested in the process, parts chosen to replace and why. So a higher level overview made more sense.
@@raygianelli3612 i've been painting cars for 30 years and trust me, there is zero excitement to watching paint dry. i would love to see a video dedicated to capacitor replacement and why you choose exactly what you choose. such as measuring ripple at a certain point and then selecting the correct cap. or exactly why do you need a low impedance cap there but not there? etc. it's been touched on in countless videos and internet forums but i have yet to see something in depth like that. people say that data sheets have all the answers but some of us are still looking for the questions. great video, thank you.
Hi Ray, this aged pots always makes a lot of problems. I works fixing High End audio gear, some times I fix some vintage equipment but is complex for me, because the labor cost. I receive a small quantity of vintage gear for fun only. Good job. Best Regards.
I too prefer the new format. One thing I would also be interested to know in these rebuilds is what the parts cost in total to do the job. I know some parts you will already have in your stock but an estimate of the replacement stock could be done. It's often difficult to work out if a rebuild is financially worthwhile so any help here would be appreciated.
Mike, you've hit upon something I really struggle with. I know I usually undercharge, especially for repair work. What I consider to be a simple problem is simple just because of the hours I spent learning this stuff. The owner didn't have that knowledge. So I should charge accordingly. I've done about 8 Sansui AU-717's, so I have most of the parts and have a good idea what they cost to rebuild. However, supply chain disruptions and inflationary pressures have caused parts prices to skyrocket, as I'm sure you know. I've never done an AU-11000 before, so at this point I have no idea what the total parts cost will be. Probably be a good idea to create a spreadsheet as I go along to document the parts cost. Thanks so much for bringing this up!!
I hadn't really thought about it, Bill. I never set out to have a UA-cam channel. I have a day job, so this was never about monetization. That said, it's not bad idea, I could use the funds to upgrade the bench or get more/better video lighting, cameras or editing software.
