- The Rio Grande Gorge is a geological feature in northern New Mexico where the watercourse of the Rio Grande follows a tectonic chasm. Beginning near the Colorado border, the approximately 50-mile (80 km) gorge runs from northwest to southeast of Taos, New Mexico, through the basalt flows of the Taos Plateau volcanic field. The gorge depth is 800 feet (240 m) just south of the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, which spans the gorge 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Taos. #riogrande #exploring
The next bridge over the Rio Grande, to the North, is the road from San Luis CO, west, to Medina. The bridge is straight across the river there at ground level, and it is about 10’ above the water! Somewhere between that bridge and the gorge bridge, the river falls 600’! It is all private land, but I bet it’s BEAUTIFUL!! Is it a 600’ waterfall, or is it a series of rocky steps? I drove from Red River, to Questa, clear up to San Luis looking for a road to see the that view!🙁
Friggin sweeeeeet!
Wow. This place looks mesmerizing. There’s a sacredness to the landscape.
Indeed! I would love to go down inside the gorge to explore.
