Humic is also an important part of my program, I'm running NEXT Humic-12 but have also dropped the Andersons Humic DG. I think use of Humic has transformed by lawn.
Yeah man, I’m about to throw down the whole bag. From what I understand, Biochar lasts like 10 years or something. Long time. Not sure spacing out applications over a month has an impact.
Find a lot of documentation that its a good soil amending app. Wish it was a little cheaper but one bag can do multiple apps or you can throw it all down at once.
Never thought about that but apparently it is used. “biochar can be used to amend soils during tree plantings by mixing it and compost with backfill soil dug from tree planting holes. Applications may range from 5 to 25 percent by volume for both compost and biochar, depending on the starting qualities of the soil.” wwv.isa-arbor.com/quizbank/resources/5611/CEU_022020.pdf
I've used it last summer. I had put that and the chicken feed that Doc recommended in the middle of the summer when the lawn was looking pretty stressed and it recovered really well. This year I plan to use the Soil Mastery from Yard Mastery that is basically the humichar but has other bio stimulants in it
Sounds like a plan. I may try the Soil Mastery too, once I run though my NEXT liquid supply. I like to try different products and application routes too. Good to hear from you again.
@@LawnJourneys same here. The yard mastery blend seems like it's more cost effective to use. At the beginning of next month I'll put down my next round of fert before summer really hits
I haven’t but am tempted to. They’re all expensive but I love adding it to soil in warm months. Let me know if you get something other. If I do try something different I’ll share experience in a new video.
Do you need to continually add biochar each season to keep all the benefits? Or can you just stop after adding a certain amount and continue reaping the benefits of the humichar indefinitely? I think Doc mentioned the carbon from biochar stays in the soil for more than a hundred years. I would think you can stop adding biochar to the lawn after a certain amount has been added over several seasons, but not totally sure. I just added Lesco's Carbonpro X, which is a biochar competitor product to Humichar, to my lawn last weekend. Will watch to see how the lawn responds.
I'm not a biochar expert by any means. Yes, I've learned the same in that it stays in the soil. I think the bigger question is more so how much total quantity do you need to lay out to get a measurable benefit. I'm about to do my second app ever so not expecting to see any visual response. My focus has been on the soil so I'm willing to stay at it. I also want to try Carbonpro x or g, I think its better priced. Where did you purchase it at? Thanks for the comment too 🙂
@@LawnJourneys It is Carbonpro G, g for granular. Bought it for $31.99 per bag at Site One. Used to be $25 a bag just last month but they raised the price recently. Lesco also makes a Carbonpro L for liquid, but apparently that is over $100 for a jug. Cost per app is likely lower for the liquid, but the initial cost of the jug was more than I was willing to shell out.
Nice video. Thisbis my 2nd year using it. I trust that it's doing what it supposed to do. It is expensive so I plan on using for 3 years and then switch back to Humic DG.
Agree it is pricey. Same approach here, I'm adding to my program to see how it changes my soil composition. I still have areas that are sticky clay and low pH. Want to see if this possibly changes the composition.
@@brodygoalie No but I hear its a real pain. You have to erradicate with total turf killing product, take caution that the liquid grass killer does not creep out and kill other grass or plants. You can also try Tenacity which is a selective herbicide that may be worth trying. If you use Tenacity please let me know how it works out.
Well I have applied tenacity twice now since three weeks ago. So I believe the bentgrass is dying so if so doni have to pull up or will I be able to overseed again? Or if the dead bentgrass comes out easy then maybe sod those areas. It's getting too late to seed but laying sod is okay to do here in the Boston area. @@LawnJourneys
Do you believe I need to dethatch those bentgrass areas again that the bentgrass comes out or is that a bad idea?? Too late to reseed here in Boston but I could sod but I just might wait until April. Your thoughts. Much appreciated. Love your vids. Very helpful!!
I would apply only in warm season when turf biota is more active. Like anything you’ll find positive and negatives on the internet. I tend to value university studies, here’s one that I recently bookmarked: uafs.edu/academics/academic-resources/symposium/_documents/elam-gambill-perez.pdf
Like your video, good luck launching the Channel. I’ve been using humichar/biochar, sourcing through Amazon. Ordered Allyn’s “Kitchen sink” version recently, Im curious if you were able to apply it. Let me know your thoughts on both of these products. Big fan of biochar, for sure.
Appreciate you taking the time to drop a comment. I'm new to biochar this season. YM Soil Mastery is another alternative plus it has the bio-stims. I haven't tried Soil Mastery yet since I'm still running the NEXT bio-stims but will probably give it a go at some point. Let me know what you think of it after you throw it down.
Great info 👍 I pushed my lawn 2 season ago using humic DG humichar, next product soil amendment... I'm a soil guy just found a organic farm near me I'll be going with a cheaper option this season 😁.. great channel
Good to hear from you will be following your vids. Assuming your getting something directly from the farm? If its something available for shipping please share, always interested in trying something new and doing a cost comparison. Humichar is not inexpensive 🙂
@@LawnJourneys thanks lawn journeys I'll definitely keep you posted on the organic I'll be doing content on the guy farm once he gets time. I was excited 😁 hey my next video i will show you the product this weekend. Cool 😎 thanks again
Super educational man. Didn’t know a lot about this stuff until this vid. Great work man!
Glad you liked it. Having fun here sharing my happenings in the yard.
Another great video Russ. I used the Andersons Humic DG last season and end up using the whole 40lb bag on my lawn. Figured it couldn't hurt :)

Hey Vince. You know some other You Tuber ate it. Didn't want to copy. Thanks for dropping a comment.

Nicely done 👍, Thank you
Thank you, appreciate your taking time to let me know. 😀
Thanks for sharing! Can you add a little bit when planting a new shrub or tree? Or will it rob the plant of nutrients?
Never thought about that but apparently it is used.

I put 200 pounds on 5,000 sq ft over two years time. Definitely can tell the difference.
Its expensive but I believe that soil is very important. I've been doing one app per year, mostly due to cost. Now I want to order some!
