    My buddy is going through a welding class right now and he just bought the arc captain 200 multi process machine. It came with a lot of stuff and was on special when he got it. I’ll be interested to see what you think about them. So… your content is why you hit 20000 subscribers. You may not realize the amount of good accurate information you’ve been putting in your videos. You’re bound to get a lot more in the future. I’m a hobbiest welder at home and I’ve learned a lot by watching you. You can be proud of the content you’ve put out. Keep it up, thanks.

    Congratulations on the 20k!!! Your channel definitely is growing at a rapid rate as it should be. The wisdom, knowledge, and expertise that you convey in such an understandable way is a major contributing factor as to the growth. The consistent quality content that you provide is an other reason. I’ve followed the channel for a while now and I thoroughly enjoy it. Congratulations on the new job too, it sounds like it is gonna be a nice gig. Hopefully you enjoy it and you are still able to put out some content. Be safe out there

    A video on preheat/post heat for high strength steel and thicker plate would be great. When to do it, how to do it and why to do it. Awesome welding channel!

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  5 місяців тому

      I will definitely cover that. I will have to get some thicker material to work with. The preheat, interpass temp, and post heat really becomes an issue with higher strength steels above 3/8th of an inch. Thinner stuff (like say 1/8 chromoly tube) doesn’t need the attention say 1/2in thick chromoly bar will. I will have to do a lot of things wrong to show what happens (aka weld cracks lol).

    I'm looking forward to the video reviewing the welding gloves. I have been very disappointed with the last few pairs I have purchased. I actually suggested that topic to Project Farm sometime ago. Good gloves are hard to find, eagerly awaiting your perspective. Thanks for all the great videos.

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  5 місяців тому +1

      I got burned by a few pairs which sort of prompted the video (along with requests). I am hoping to find a few that are standouts for reasonable money. My two go to are a Lincoln and Hobart glove, both seem to work pretty good for me. I didn’t realize it but Lincoln makes about 7 general welding gloves, I will be testing 4 of them. Needless to say the gloves are worlds apart just on initial impression lol. One pair is like a 5xl oven mitt 😅

    Interesting to hear your glove review will be stick/MIG focused. Usually I just think any thick leather glove is fine, so I'll be interested to hear your criteria for testing.
    But I`m really excited to hear you've working on a TIG series. I have decent stick and MIG machines but wanted to try TIg. I picked up the ridiculously cheap ArcCaptain TIG 200 ($180). I don't know yet whether it will be a nice surprise or a source of frustration but it seems like it will be reasonable to get started with. We'll see. If you think you're series will be out by summer that would be perfect timing for me!
    Congratulations on 20k!

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  5 місяців тому

      For most welding average gloves are fine. What will be interesting is the cost vs longevity issue. I know for a fact the higher end 30$ welding gloves last a long time and protect against burns when handling hot metal parts. However they might not last long enough to justify the price. I do know the worst burns I have had with gloves are wearing tig gloves and flux core wire welding, so there definitely is something to be said to having thicker heat resistant gloves.
      Glad to hear you want to get into tig 😀. It’s easier than you think, it’s mostly having steady hands and smooth movement. It takes time to train your hands to move correctly. Once you get over the initial steep learning curve it becomes far easier. Tig is 100% worth learning to do, the doors it opens with what you can do is significant.

  • @cgd8253
    @cgd8253 5 місяців тому

    Please do a video on how you position your head , arms, and upper body to best observe a MIG (gmaw) puddle and also how best to achieve a steady arc when laying a bead. I'm 74 and new to welding and struggling to lay straight, consistent beads. Also, while ARC shots are great for understanding what to look for, they often seem close up. Is there any way to video at a distance that better shows what the welder is actually seeing? If you already have content that covers this, please point me in the right direction. All of your content is fantastic and I have spent hours binge watching your videos. Thanks for taking, what has to be a significant portion of your free time, to make all of this available to us.

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  5 місяців тому

      The hardest part to get with arc footage is an accurate representation of what is seen because everyone sees things differently. In my stick welding series I had some arc footage that shows a further distance than up close. With MiG welding the nozzle will obscure the view which requires some creative head/hand placement to see what’s going on. For me, I am so used to welding so I can still weld without seeing the molten pool with MiG. However that’s years of experience, and unrealistic for a new person to do. I will do a body positioning video with MiG because it could help out a lot, I have been asked that before and have yet to cover it. 😀

      The nice thing is skills do cross over from MiG to tig. If you can run a straight decent MiG weld that will give a big leg up with tig.

    More video's on tig would be fantastic, especially different filler material and what to use when. I recently bought an everlast typhoon 230. After spending 1 year trying to love the $98 yeswelder i just couldn't do it. I haven't tig welded in over 20 year's and i dont remember it being this hard lol.

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  5 місяців тому

      Tigging with a bare bones setup is kind of like stick welding auto body. You can do it but it sucks lol. Tig comes down to 4 key things: 1) consistent arc gap, 2) consistent smooth movement, 3) consistent filler metal addition, and 4) running enough amperage to not have the filler stick. The learning curve to get functionally good at tig is steep. For tig to work properly you have a very narrow window of what works, so you have to be 95% “perfect” for everything. With mig you have so much more leeway on what will work, it’s far more forgiving. The good news is with tig once you master a simple straight bead on plate everything else is easy. With mig and stick they are far harder to weld overhead, and vertical up than tig. You just have to get used to grinding tungsten and dealing with constant failures for a while with tig lol.

    I have very large hands - my glove size is 12, where normal extra large is considered a size 10.
    I recently found a pair of Stick Welding gloves by TILLMAN that are big enough to easily fit me, and probably could accommodate a size 13 or 14 glove.
    Tillman 750XXL is printed on the front, and the tag Part Number is 7502X and they are mainly Elk Skin, soft and promise to be excellent gloves for people with really large hands.

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  18 днів тому +1

      I ordered them based on your suggestion, I will test them when I get around to finishing the video on the gloves. Since you have big hands don’t buy the harbor freight black XL mig gloves, they fit too tight and transferred too much heat melting my knuckle lol.

    Got an idea for you... and on the same two welders. Each one makes a all in one mig, stick, and tig welder. ARCCAPTAIN MIG Welder, 200Amp 6 in 1 Gas MIG/Gasless Flux Core MIG/Stick/Lift TIG and the YESWELDER Digital MIG-205DS MIG Welder. Both are entry level, covers the three (forth if you count wire feed) major electric welding. Between $300 and $350 ish. BUT, where other channels don't do is test and show each step. Other channels only test the mig, but what about the tig? The stick? Hot start, arc-force,anti-stick? How about the user interface? (screen/knobs/etc)Yea, I know there are a bunch of other brands... but maybe start with those?

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg

      I have an arc captain and yes welder I will be testing shortly, their smaller units. I will likely go and test the ones you’re talking about in the future. Most of the cheap all in ones perform poorly with stick and tig which is why you probably don’t see many reviews on that. I definitely will test those features lol.

    REALLY looking forward to the Flux Cored rig shootout! That is a mainstream market that's rising amongst the DIYers and they are more capable today than in the past when coupled with quality wire. I agree, with the behind the scenes wiring (observation) and that it would be a huge interest as well based on the differing manufacturers designs. Personally I'm an ArcCaptain fan as I have a few of their machines but I also own the HF Titanium 125 and it's honestly a solid little FC machine too! Eager to see what you come out with. Keep up the excellent vids Greg; you've got one of the best Channels out there and cut straight to the point, no B.S. and thorough explanations to each point. Cheers.

      Thanks for the kind words. I am really glad that there are legit affordable choices for decent entry level machines out there. Not that long ago you couldn’t touch a tig welder outside of a welding store, now even harbor freight sells them. The cheapest flux core machine you could get was a Chicago electric and it was garbage. Now you can get little welders like the titanium 125 for under 150$ and literally weld all sorts of things. The more affordable and better the welders get the more the average man can do, which I am a fan of 😀

    Id love to get into tig welding, but the gas is what's holding me back. I primarily do flux core and stick on occasion. Just being a broke ass garage tinkerer, i just cant justify the cost and hassle of getting and refilling gas.
    Is there any way to mess around with scratch start tig without gas?
    Also congrats on 20k man, and thanks for a shot at the mask giveaway. Your channel is a hidden gem, but I have a feeling it's going to boom like crazy pretty soon.

    • @makingmistakeswithgreg
      @makingmistakeswithgreg  5 місяців тому +1

      Gas is a must with tig. There are ways to get decent deals on gas cylinders. The local company I deal with helps me out all the time with cylinders (I have 12 so that helps lol). An in date tested 300cuft cylinder can be purchased for sub 200$ and a fill up is about 75$. Believe it or not it’s barely more money to swap a 300cu ft cylinder than a 125. A 300cuft cylinder can last 28-30 hours of tig welding. Obviously that’s still an added expense that stick and flux core doesn’t have, but once a cylinder is owned it’s not that expensive to tig weld. Stick and flux core are still far more useful outdoors by far lol.

      I definitely agree. I wouldn’t mind giving input to a company to better their products. Many of the cheaper welder companies send free products out to people just to attempt to sell more products. I get that, and don’t think that’s a bad thing. It’s just when I know the products aren’t that good and the company is somewhat scamming people, I don’t see a benefit to work with them. I am a terrible salesman, so when I say some disparaging remarks on a companies products I got for free the last thing I want to deal with is the company wanting to break ties with me for being honest lol.
