Henry Rifles Disgraceful Upgrade!TruGlow Sights

- After getting my Henry back from repair I tested it thoroughly to make sure repairs are good! About 200 rounds later I’m happy!
Next up is to address the Semi Buckhorn sights!
The sights are great but older eyes can’t group beyond 50 yards.
After researching and trying out peeps I bought a set of sights that didn’t work out, then replaced those with a set of metal TruGlow fiber optic sights that have fixed my sighting issues!
Help me decide about the look and lack of cool versus the fantastic functionality!

I’m 55 years old and had same problem with seeing the sights on my Henry 44 mag. I got the skinner rear peep and painted front bead bright orange like you did and it helped my shooting tremendously. I actually killed a deer this year at 90 yds with it.
That’s awesome!
I’m not ruling out the Skinner yet.
If I do change I will keep the front sight. Love how bright it is!
Thanks for your comment buddy!👍
I have several lever guns (22, 45 Colt, 357 Mag) & I've installed red fiber optic front sights on all of them. It's so much easier to see with my 75 yr old eyes. I've also installed peep rear sights on all these for the same reason.
I’m about to do the same on the latest Marlin lever gun!😁
Fiber optic on the front and skinner peep on the receiver. That's what I have on my Henry 44 mag and Henry 22 mag carbine. Helps my old eyes.
That sounds like a pretty good combination.
I've gone with the High Viz green fiber optic front sight and kept my rear Buckhorn on ALL of my Henrys.
This one little change has TRANSFORMED the ability to pick up a good sight picture out to 75 yards.
Anything farther and I'll put on a scope.
That sounds pretty much like where I’m at.
Where are hunt? I don’t expect a longer shot and 75 yards.
Shooting targets 75 yards is a good distance.
Thanks a lot for watching and leaving a comment! I really appreciate it!
Same, love the brightness of the green hi-viz .
It sure brings the sights back to life for tired eyes buddy!
Looks good and shoots good. Complainers are just jealous.
I seriously believe I’m gonna leave it that way. It works great and I don’t really see how the peeps would work better for me and my peepers.
Thanks for your comment buddy!
I put fiber optics on both my Henry rifles. Don’t regret it at all. They made a great gun even better.
I shot again just yesterday and I think I’m sticking to the TruGlows!
It’s like night and day with the speed of getting on target and accuracy over the Buckhorns!
The Buckhorns take too long to get lined up with the little rear notch and determine the shot.
Thanks for this. At 75 I too need a little help.... TrGlow it is!
Tom
These sights made a gigantic difference! I was so happy to keep the iron sight functions and not have to scope my rifle!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! I greatly appreciate it!
One of the reasons I bought a Henry X 30-30 was it has the fiber optic sights already on it. Always wanted a Henry lever action rifle and a 30-30. Since Marlins are hard to find, I found this Henry and I'm very happy with it.
There are so many options with Henry I had a hard time making up my mind!
I decided to go with the Big Boy classic because it was the one that originally caught my eye.
The semi buckhorns were something that just didn’t work for me! It would be nice if Henry gave a few options in sights across the product line.
I really love the fiber optics now!
Thanks for your comment!
I went Williams receiver peep and red fiber front sight. Red pops on everything. Brown, green leaves, snow, low light. I suggest red to everyone
That might be a great combination!
I was considering that myself .
In fact the TruGlow fiber optic sights were bought for the front sight to use with a peep.
But when I put the front and rear set on it popped and was great!
I won’t rule a peep out in the future, but for now I’m happy as a pig in slop!
Thank you for your comment my friend!
I couldn't focus on the rear sight and the front sight on my Henry, which is also in 44 mag. I tried the fiber optics and it made all the difference I needed.
I used the green on the front sight and the red on the rear and it worked for me. I got about ten years on ya and was starting to think my rifle days were numbered.
I also used the Ranger Points on a different Henry Rifle but I still had trouble seeing the brass front sight. I polished it and it helped but it doesn't last very long. I think the model paint is gonna work just fine. I used the largest peep sight on the rear and it is still plenty accurate. I like the way it fits the receiver like it was made that way.
I was ok with the red and green. Didn’t really care which combination as long as they’re different.
Thanks for the comment!
I have the same on my H001 and it’s just a fun gun, and they make it much more fun. I shoot in my backyard in the evening mostly and it’s full of trees - the stock sights are too hard to pick up - it was a no brainer 20 dollar upgrade
I love the Tru Glow sights man! Without them , I wouldn’t trust a shot on a deer past 50-60 yards max.
With these fiber optic sights I practice at 80 yards !
I just ordered the same sight for my Henry 357 Big Boy. Thanks for bringing this product to my attention. I like the looks of your Truglo sights much better than the Ranger Point ones, plus mounting those on my brass receiver had me on the fence as well as the cost. It is pretty hard to beat having the Truglo setup sent to my door for $77 and my rifle will still look like a stock Henry for the most part. I read on the Henry Forum that Henry actually recommends the Truglo sights.
I finished making up my mind today. I’m leaving the TruGlow sights on.
I can consistently group 2 inches at 50 yards and can group the inside of a paper plate at 80.
That might get better.
... I have a Chiappa Alaskan 92 takedown in 44 mag with a Skinner aperture rear sight and a High Viz front sight ... the rear Skinner sight is on a Picatinny rail on which I can mount a Burris Fastfire 3 red dot sight if needed (never is) ... the red dot is kept in the rifles butt stock pouch with other tools I might need
I really and absolutely dig those Chiapas man!!!
Try a Marbles Bullseye sight. Just what you need. Look it up on UA-cam. Does not detract from the classic look.
I’ve heard of those.
I’ll keep it in mind if I decide to make a change.👍
Thanks for your comment!
Agreed! The Bullseye sight is like an old antiaircraft sight. Fast target acquisition. Naturally aligns with the eye.
And I'm in my 70's now, and had cataract surgery in both eyes. I have no issues with the stock sights on my leverguns, but on my "bunny gun", an old Glenfield model60, that Bullseye sight is great.
@@anangryranger I just now replied because I put a set of TruGlow bullseye sights on my Remington 1187 for Turkey and love it!
I’m about to put a real bullseye on my Henry 22.
This might become a theme!
Thanks for sharing your opinion buddy!
if it works....its good.
i have the same problem visually. my solution was an inexpensive marbles bullseye peep sight, a taller marbles front sight, and neon orange fingernail polish.
works for me
That’s what it’s all about my friend. What works best for you!
Thank you for your comment!
I’m 74 years old. Tru Glo’s are my go to open sights
Looks like they’re gonna be mine as well buddy!
Thanks for your comment!
Need to keep a list…
1. Grow where you’re planted
2. Support all legal, ethical hunters
3. Function over form
4. A gun is a tool
Preach it Mike, following generations need to learn and us “boomers” need to be reminded… 👍🦌
Thank you sir!
I appreciate your comment!👍
... the only non-scope thing I can see better than High Viz is a red dot or reflex sight like the Holosun 510C
I’m running Sig Romeo 5s on my ARs .
I have a scope on my 270WSM , everything else is iron or Truglow. 👊🏻
I think I prefer the looks of the sights on your Big Boy more than the Ranger sights I was ready to purchase. I wanted to avoid the look of mounting something on my brass receiver, even if it was also brass. This keeps it closer to stock but with some somewhat subtle change to improve the rifle as a tool. A subtle change that might make the difference in bringing dinner home to your family or not.
I’m really starting to agree buddy! Thanks for your comment!
God-bless you brother
Thank you sir !
I appreciate the kind comment.
God bless you and yours as well!
I have a scope on a couple, and thought about a red dot on one. I even have a couple with skinners. Most are just the buckhorn but I don’t shoot most of em. Do what ya need to do to see them
Thanks a lot for the comment buddy! I greatly appreciate it!👍
Even in days gone by folk would alter their sights in europe they would take a miners lamp that used Calsium Carbide with water driping on it the resulting gas was flamable and gave a deep black smoke which they would coat their forsight with also the rear sight if the original coating was worn off.
That’s pretty interesting! Thanks for sharing that tidbit bud! And thanks for watching it even a comment! I really appreciate it!
I'm with you!
Thanks Roger! After I changed my sights I shoot much better and enjoy the rifle a lot more!
Thanks for your comment buddy!
Hey Mike appreciate tips on the fiber optics sights. I put blazed Orange nail Polish on my front sight on my Marlin 30-30 . Can't focus with bio focus everything's blurry . I might try the fiber optics sights or I may have to get a Skinner peep I don't know I love iron sights on my rifle. but I'm 64 years old and I can't see it really good No more . But I'm not going to give up ! great video thanks for the tips 👍
Thanks for your comment and feedback Randy!
I wasn’t nuts at first and still on the fence when I made the video.
After being on a while and shooting, I’m in love with the fiber optics!
I like the old school styling of the buckhorns but I just can’t see them good.
No Problem brother...Im an old Boomer too.....the factory sights are tough for me too.
The True Glow fiber optics have worked out great now that I’ve shot them a few weeks!
I was scared I would have to scope the rifle because the buckhorns weren’t working out.
I’m really glad I can see to shoot and keep this short range setup scope free!
Thank you for your comment! I really appreciate it!
I’m going to do the same thing with the fiber optic sights. I bought a used big boy Henry with the skinner sight on it, I have to buy a new front sight to to use the skinner sight because the I’m out of elevation
I’ve talked to several people who have had the same issue,, and watched many UA-cam videos about the front sights after switching to skinner sights.
It seems that if every dovetail in every rifle is machined to the same specs and every Skinner sight is machined to the same specs, either all the sights would work or all wouldn’t.
I work in the world of CNC machining and have seen videos of the machining processes at Henry. I don’t believe the issue is at Henry.
I think the issue is at Skinner and their QC or tolerances.
Thanks for your comment!
Function, always!
I’m so glad I put these new sites on! It made all the difference in the world
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, I really appreciate it buddy!
Those high-viz look good to me!
I think they look pretty good! But the function and ability to quickly acquire targets is so much better than the semi buckhorn sites it’s amazing!
I'm 56 now, and talk about blessed eyesight, I need cheaters but I'm still living without prescription eyewear! Anyway, thus far, I still can't do Hi-Vis sights. I just don't like 'em. My beef is that I can pinpoint my exact target spot. Hi-Vis cover up a percentage of the target. The further away, the worse it is.
If I'm aiming for a bullseye 50yds out, I still hit the paper, but at 100yds, it's hard to nail those tighter groups when you can't focus on the center of the bullseye. It's like I'm creating a new bullseye, and I'm... just not impressed.
My solution has been 1x magnification red dot, and back in 2014, I shot a hard running 8pt buck @30yds with it. With the red dot, I can adjust the bead diameter and target acquisition is lightning fast because there is no magnification. I was pushing a patch of woods when that 8-pointer came over the ridge. All I had was seconds, to determine the rate of speed, direction, an upcoming shoot lane, and quick evaluation of possible dangers beyond the target once in the shooting lane. All of this was less than 3 seconds. Ithaca 20ga hit it in the lower neck on the same height line as the vitals and it dropped from a blown windpipe in 35yds.
I'm not that quick with the old irons or the Hi-Vis. The red dot, for me, has been a much better choice. I still hunt the old irons on a handful of rifles because if I have the time, like I do with unsuspecting varmints or treed squirrels, I can still put the irons together for a good kill shot. I've never been charged by a bear. I've had standoffs, but never a charge, so I can't speak for that situation, but when bear hunting, the open sights of the 35Rem still do just fine from the blind. If they become too difficult, I'll break out the Ithaca.
Last, I also use Testors paints for little touch up/accent jobs! It's never failed me.
That’s a good idea!
I have a dig sauer Romeo 5 red dot on an AR.
I might try putting that on the Henry to see how well it works out for me!
I’m all about what works best!
Thanks for the suggestion! I didn’t even consider that!
@@Hunting4Hookers I'm not sure what design the Sig red dot is, but mine is like a little juice can, and I want to say about 40mm diameter. I've tried a smaller window version on a Buckmark Hunter and didn't like it at all. It was hard to locate the dot let alone put the dot on the target. By the time I sighted it, I took it back off. But the bigger, cylindrical style, I have had zero issues with that set up.
Hope it helps!
It helps a lot!
Thank you for sharing your opinion!
I appreciate it buddy!
@@Hunting4Hookers Did you put on the Sig and give it a whirl?
I have the 45 Traditional, had the same light primer situation. Also had the same great service. We have the same eyes and the fiber optics are the best thing I’ve done for my Henry. What good is a “pretty” rifle if you can’t get a good bead on a deer? I’ve kelp the original equipment and it will be past down to my grandson along with the rifle when the time comes.
Hey thanks for the input buddy!
Without those sights I wouldn’t be able to use the rifle for anything but decoration.😁
If can’t see no need shoot cause you will not hit target
Do what you need to. It looks like I'm ten years further along than you, I'm using red dots on all my short-range tools.
I considered pulling my Sig Romeo5 off my AR and trying it.
I’m not ruling it out on a possible Henry 22 Magnum!
Thanks for your comment buddy!
@@Hunting4Hookers
Try a Vortex Venom or Burris Fastfire. I put a Vortex on my Marlin 1894 because I have trouble seeing the front sight some, anyway the Venom is small and you hardly notice it until needed.
I don’t have experience with the Venom. I’ll see if they have one too check out at Academy or Sportsman’s warehouse.
Thanks for your comment and suggestion!👍
I know exactly what you are talking about
Thanks! I appreciate your comment !
If it works for you use it bud.
Thank you, buddy! I appreciate you watching and leaving a comment! It really helps!
I put these fiber optic sites on this rifle and hits the best thing I’ve ever done to a firearm! I absolutely love it!
Do whatever works for you thats all that matters.
Thanks buddy!
I settled on the fiber optics and have become a better “iron sighted” shot than I ever would have with the factory semi buckhorn sights!
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! It helps a lot and I really appreciate it
Hate them buckhorns, especially on flintlocks .
Give truglow fiber optics a try.
They are phenomenal.
Did the same and i would not look back
I love those fiber optic sights!!! It makes all the difference in the world!
There is nothing wrong with fixing a gun any brand so you can shoot it
I agree now! I’m over the nostalgia look and more for the fact I can ethically shoot big game!
