Fantastic lesson. Paper and pen is the way to go(really I’m being serious). Now I would like to see the triads on the 3 sets of strings in the same way. Thank you!!
Of all the 'learn the fretboard' videos I've watched on YT, this is by far the best. I can remember 3 shapes (I already knew 2 and 2). I can now practice this for a week or so, and I will know the fretboard. This should be a fundamental lesson for all new players. Many thanks!
I’ve watched so many videos explaining Music Theory. So I have some idea how it works but never fully understood it. But you explained it differently and I finally started to see patterns on the fretboard. Thank you so much. You are great 👍
Always love a pen and paper episode, but we even got some practical fretboard demonstrations too! And I can't thank you enough to explaining all of this so simply. Learned more from you in fifteen minutes than in the literal years I spent trying to understand it as a kid. Looking forward to the next one!
These lessons with a pen and notepad and your fingers have taught me so much. Reminds me of Yoffy and fingerbobs!!, showing my age there!! You are a natural teacher Ricky and its thanks to you my playing has taken off.. many thanks fella, looking forward to many more lessons in the future ❤️
I recommend your videos to my students as we have very similar teaching methods thanks for your hard work will purchase your book soon you are a you tuber who gives honest value
I have been trying to find a good clear explanation of the caged system. Kept hearing about it but not really getting the idea. You are the first video that made it make sense for me. Thanks
That is Super, Cool, Keen and Groovy. I've never studied the CAGED system until now. That makes more cents than Howard Hughes and Bill Gates ever had. Thanks Ricky for all your video's. I plan on getting your book. Not having your book is like having a guitar without strings, it's a must. 😊
If I play the A starting on 5th and end up on a different "A" using this awesome method...how do I identify the scale to solo at any given octave? I'm sure there's a pattern based on what string I start or end upon. This one question would make such a difference it's hard to articulate 😂 Again, thank you for everything you do. You have really been a huge well of actual understanding for me and a lit of other folks.
I think there's many scales, depending on what you are doing. But this is a good backbone on which to lay other patterns you're using, diatonic scales, minor scales, pentatonic scales. Knowing even just the octaves helps me navigate and work out things in relation to them. With the octaves I know where the 7ths, b3rds and 5ths are, and from those I know everything else. Just keep building and linking, I figure. Sometimes I work out a melody in my head and I can go to the guitar and find it correctly on the first try. Eventually, I hope I"ll be able to do that without thinking so hard about it - lol. But working through the details, like these octave and triad patterns is how I'm gonna get there. Which reminds me - this is a diagram for arpeggios, isn't it? Could just drop out the 5th, sub in the b7th, and you've got a bunch of dominant 7th triads to play around with.
I started to play the "diatonic scale" as I call it in 1988 or so. I don't think I heard of CAGED until 2002 or something. When I realised I could use five of the modes to play the major scale over the entire neck it felt great. I think it might have been the Fastfingers mail order courses with cassettes that solidified the box shapes I still use today. I haven't really done much "soloing" for nearly thirty years, but have strayed beyond those same boxes over the years. Maybe I'll end up giving CAGED another go. I think I've already attempted to stick letter to the modes, but I've kind of got stuck in my ways about my boxes though.
Thanks Ricky. I just found your channel yesterday and have already watch about 5 of your videos, and I subscribed today! Your videos are great and super helpful man! So thank you for that, and keep up the great videos! Your awesome!! 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow! I've never seen this described like this. Now the CAGED system makes sense to me. You're the man! And - I just ordered your book from Amazon. I'm sure I'll learn even more from you. Thanks so much! New Sub. here! 👏🏻👍🥂.
Hi, mate. Good video, thx for sharing your knowledge. At the start of the video you mention of watching another video first, but I can’t seem to find it. Could u pls pass on that link? I’d really appreciate. Thanks
Kind of. The uke only has 4 strings so the D shaped octave will help you find notes from your D string but because CAGED uses 6 and 5 string chords you end up not having enough strings to visualise. I wouldn't rule it out. But you've given me something to think about Johannes!
@@rickysguitar 👍 I sort of know my movable chord shapes. But I understand your take on explaining the caged system so that one can easily find the notes on the fretboard.
Thx for this video. I am still having trouble understanding. It comes from the term "shape". When it says "C-shape" I am looking for something that looks like a "C". When it says "G-shape" I am looking for something that looks like a "G". Why is it "C-called" shape then when it doesn't look like a "C"?
If you’re an absolute beginner this is probably too much for you. Focus on getting control of your hands and sounding clear notes and playing a few tunes you recognise. Music first, then theory!
Many of your video titles say “great guitar players know (but you don’t)”. Of course, you’re always right. I’m curious, however: Who told you? (I respect, appreciate and subscribe to your channel). Excellent topics, very well explained.
34 years of teaching guitar professionally in schools, further education and privately means I’ve seen pretty much every approach to learning guitar. I also have to play up to the UA-cam algorithm with how i present my content. It’s worth it to get critical concepts out in the wild to guitar players who need the information. It’s no good making an awesome video for 10 people…so I play the game!
Have to be honest I understand what you are doing and I do recognise these patterns from playing. However when trying to inprovise lead I forget it all and just play what I know LOL.
@@danielo2427 They are referring to the shapes of the open chords, and all open chords have first root from the left on string that matches their name.... except C chord.
@@ShejtanInsan oh funny, I’ve always thought of CAGED in a slightly different way. I’ve always thought about the shapes of the open chords and where the roots (and octaves) are located. It works for all 5 chords. For example: C shape, the roots are on the A and B string, and you can play it anywhere in the fretboard and the roots are still going to be in the same relative position to each other. Same goes for D: roots are on the D and B strings, etc.
Hopelessly underrated lessons!
Fantastic lesson. Paper and pen is the way to go(really I’m being serious). Now I would like to see the triads on the 3 sets of strings in the same way. Thank you!!
Thank you Anne Marie :) Triads lesson coming soon!
Agreed! I even had to write out the Circle of Fifths (notes) so that I could make sense of it.

THIS IS HIDDEN GEM... this is the best of all the content out there of this sort. This video explains the things way much clearer and easy to follow.
Possibly the best guitar lesson I’ve ever seen.

Brilliant Ricky, you always have any excellent explanation, I have never heard before!
Incredibly helpful ! Thanks !
Amazing. The best way to visualize. Thank you!
Extremelly useful and very easy to understand!! Both videos! Thanks a lot!! Greetings from Athens Greece!
I'm not sure i can express how happy I was to lnow where you were going next on the fretboard from hearing you explain this!
Thank you so much!

I’ve just received your book and it is a fantastic source, colourful and inspiring.

I really like that you physically write it out ❤ this is so helpful
simple, clear and logical, l learnt not only theory but also how to teach from u❤️

Again another excellent explanation as usual.
It might help to remember that A and E have the same shape because they are the two vowels in CAGED.
My Spiral bound book arrived yesterday (on my birthday ) so life is good!
Super stoked to hear that Widey! Hope you had an amazing day!

This is crazy. E and A shapes are basically the same, so are D and G. C serves as the conector from the 2nd string. Mind blown
Thx a million for writing it all down FIRST :) !

Hi. Does that work for ukulele as well? Or is there a similar pattern?
On a bartitone ukulele, i have a DGBE tuning...
Kind of. The uke only has 4 strings so the D shaped octave will help you find notes from your D string but because CAGED uses 6 and 5 string chords you end up not having enough strings to visualise. I wouldn't rule it out. But you've given me something to think about Johannes!

Look up CAGFD for the uke version of the CAGED system

When it says "G-shape" I am looking for something that looks like a "G". Why is it "C-called" shape then when it doesn't look like a "C"?
It's the shape of the C chord, not the letter C.
So as a beginner, first
, I am using this to be able to identify notes? Then to track the same key up and down the board? And finally to make chords?
If you’re an absolute beginner this is probably too much for you. Focus on getting control of your hands and sounding clear notes and playing a few tunes you recognise. Music first, then theory!

The C shaped octave does start on the C string, well sort of, if the string was tuned to a 4th like the others it would be a c string.
Have to be honest I understand what you are doing and I do recognise these patterns from playing. However when trying to inprovise lead I forget it all and just play what I know LOL.
I’m going to do a follow up on using this for improvising!

L shape is the D shape the C shape is a straight line another L shape is a G shape G shape is a mirror inside L shape
Is there a mistake? The G shape(starting on 'c' and 'e' starting on 'c' @ 5:51 Aloha
Just checked. No mistakes :) Download the PDF as that helps massively. Better yet! Get a pencil and some paper and draw it out yourself.

Everyone hates me now because I said, "Let's play some blues in the key of Eggs." I blame you.
You main fretboard doesn't match with the CAGED notes ...it seems you have gone ahead of two semitones .....your D on the 13th fret is a C .....
No it’s correct. Download the pdf and you can study it closer.
Great video, but I prefer to call this system BAGED because first root from the nut in C shape is actually positioned on B string.
Aren’t the letters referring to the shapes of the open chords and where the roots are located?
