I am very curious what type of bass drum you use. Is it 22" and by what? 6-ply or higher? Birch wood? I am looking for the ideal bass drum for metal and I am having troubles figuring it out. I am considering getting a 22 x 17 birch 6-ply by Yamaha. I just want something that will be the most audible in black metal. Any feedback from anyone would be much appreciated.

I have a MAPEX M Birch drumset with the standard 22" bass drum. In general wood type etc doesn't matter that much. It is faaar more important how you tune and dampen your kick abd what type of beaters you are using. And of course the way you play (how hard and even are your hits?) also plays a huge role.
I would recommend plastic or wood beaters, a good amount of dampening material and a batter head that is not too tight.
