Alex was "the man with the golden voice." Every once in a while, somebody comes along that sounds like they have gravel in their throat. I love to hear somebody like that, especially when they put some umph in it like Alex did in Soul Deep. RIP Alex.
Very nice. I saw Alex with the Box Tops in Reno at least 20 years ago and it was the happiest I’ve ever seen him. Totally engaged. I’ve got to get those negatives out and get something scanned.
This was his natural voice. He made it deeper/raspier during Box Tops years at the request of Dan Penn (their producer/songwriter). Alex had range. Even during Box Tops he would sing softer for songs like, "Neon Rainbow", "I Shall be Released" and "Good Morning Dear". Or as laughingly deep as "Yesterday Where's My Mind". That one sounds like he's making fun of the raspy voice by overly exaggerating it. He could sing so beautifully like in his band Big Star's song "Thirteen". I just love all his "voices" 😊

Great sing. Nice band sound, but a subdued version overall. I wish there had been more verve in Alex's vocals. This was a low-energy performance, IMHO. But instructive, nonetheless.
